21、 Certainly, a well-rounded education is the foundation of our growth. I am grateful to the many incredible(难以置信的) teachers who have inspired me to do greater things, and have fired my enthusiasm for lifelong learning! I have also been honored to have the most amazing teachers in all of my children’s lives. These are extraordinary people who not only teach our children, but love them, challenge them, and provide an environment where a child learns how to learn.
However, sometimes I wonder if the outline of our educational plan is lacking something. I watched the movie Easy A with my older daughter. The main character’s parents were loving, supportive, and built great confidence in their daughter and developed her ability to handle her own problems.
Maybe we might want to spend time showing them how real life works — the credit card isn’t free money — you will have to pay it back at sometime. Oh, and get this — they charge you for borrowing that money. Perhaps, we should spend some time on interpersonal relationships. I worry that our kids do not know how to relate to one another.
Choosing a career is a daunting task. My daughter is in her second year in college and has changed her major twice. It’s not that she didn’t know what she wanted to do. What she “wanted to do” and the degree she chose did not match.
I have learned many college students do not know what they want to do because they haven’t seen what it looks like in the real world. Being a journalist in the real world looks very different from writing stories. Maybe if we spent some time letting them experience real life — maybe two or three courses in areas of interest in high schools that give them a “feel” for what that particular field would look like, they might be better prepared. I do not know the solution, but it seems that it should at least be a topic of discussion.

22、Japan is very serious about robotics (机器人技术). If robots are going to fit in, they probably need to learn the Japanese custom of serving tea. Fortunately, researchers at the University of Tokyo are just exploring that. In a show this week, a humanoid(人形机器人)with camera eyes made by Kawada Industries Inc. poured tea from a bottle into a cup. Then another robot on wheels delivered the cup of tea in an experimental room that has sensors embedded in the floor and sofa as well as cameras on the ceiling, to simulate(模仿)life with robot technology.
"A human being may be faster, but you’d have to say ‘Thank you’," said Professor Tomomasa Sato from the University of Tokyo. "That’s the best part about a robot. You don’t have to feel bad about asking it to do things."
Sato believes Japan, a rapidly aging society where more than a fifth of the population is 65 or older, will lead the world in designing robots to care for the elderly, sick and bedridden(长期卧床的).
Already, monitoring technologies, such as sensors that automatically turn on lights when people enter a room, are becoming widespread in Japan.
The walking, child-size Asimo from Honda Motor Co. greets people at show-rooms. NEC Corp. has developed a smaller robot-on-wheels companion called Papero. A seal robot available since 2004 can entertain the elderly and others in need of fuzzy companionship.
Sato says his experimental room is raising awareness about privacy questions that may arise when electronic devices(设备)monitor a person’s movements down to the smallest detail.
On the bright side, the tea-pouring humanoid has been programmed to do the dishes.

23、An 11-year-old boy has become a hero since his quick thinking saved two lives. Davyon Johnson helped save a choking classmate and a woman attempting to escape a fire. On Dec. 8, 2021 the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department honored Johnson for his heroics at a meeting. At the event, Undersheriff Greg Martin gave the sixth-grader a certificate naming him an honorary deputy for the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office. “We are all so proud of you, Johnson!!” wrote the sheriff’s office in a post on Facebook on Dec. 14, 2021.
The Muskogee Public Schools recognized Davyon Johnson during the meeting Tuesday. Principal Latricia Dawkins considered Johnson a hero in an interview. “He always says that he wants to be an emergency medical technician. So he put that desire into action and immediately saved that young man,” Dawkins said, adding that Johnson “is just a kind soul and liked by students and teachers”.
The first incident happened during the school day. Johnson jumped into action after one of his classmates accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap and was choked (窒息) by it after attempting to unscrew (拧开) it with his mouth. Johnson immediately ran to the child and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Dawkins said, “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same.
Johnson’s heroism didn’t end there. After school, during the day after he saved his classmate, Johnson spotted a woman attempting to escape from a burning home. He quickly realized the worried woman was moving slowly and ran across the street to help her. “She was a disabled lady and being a good citizen, I should help her leave,” Johnson said.
LaToya, the boy’s mother, said, “I don’t feel surprised at my son’s actions. I’m just a proud mom.”

24、Eat less and exercise more — it has long been a magic word for reducing extra weight. But now it seems that all the hard work may have been useless.
Scientists say there are ten other reasons why people just keep getting bigger. They say that sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants can play a role in weight gain.
Traditionally, people have focused on diet and exercise to solve the problem. However, the scientists from top US and Canadian universities say that other things must be considered.
Less sleep could be partly the reason. In recent years, the average night’s sleep has dropped from nine hours to just seven. Sleep shortage changes levels of the hormones (激素) that control food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite. If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories to cool down or heat up. But if the temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicine to control their blood pressure can often put on weight. Similarly, studies have shown that going on taking the pill can add to a woman’s weight.
The nature of a mother may also be the reason, with our body shape partly inherited (经遗传获得). The overweight are also more likely to look for partners of a similar size. And their children are more likely to be overweight.
And the use of pollutants is on the rise, say the researchers. The man-made chemicals can lead to weight gain.
Your mother’s age and your weight at birth are also important, with older women more likely to have overweight children and underweight babies having a bigger chance of being overweight in later life.
We also tend to put on weight as we get older. Giving up smoking can also help pile on the pounds.
The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins University said there was some evidence supporting poor diet and lack of exercise as the main causes of gaining weight.

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world’s people may not have enough water by the year 2025.
A private American organization called Population Action International(PAI) did the new study. It says more than 335 million people lack enough water now.The people live in 28 countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.
PAI researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025,about 3,000 million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing.Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.
Mr.Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.
The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems.Lack of water often means drinking waters is not safe.Mr.Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera which are carried in water.
Lack of water may also result in more international conflict.Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need large amounts of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way,it says,is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose.Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water.A third way is to use less water for agriculture.
The report also says long--term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth.
