二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Several years ago, the Woburn Safari Park in England admitted to killing many monkeys. The park said that it cost too much to continue to feed the monkeys, so the animals were shot and left to die. This is just one of the many cases in which animals are mistreated and murdered by humans.

Animals should be able to live life in natural environments without any negative influences by humans. The first reason zoos should be banned is that tyrannizing and murder are becoming more and more popular in zoos worldwide. In 2007, the IDA(In Defense of Animals) came out with a top ten list of the worst places for an elephant to go. All ten of the American zoos have had elephants die there, because of mistreatment, such as improper diet,  lack of exercise, and unsuitable living conditions.

Another example of mistreatment in zoos is illegal products made from animals. A tiger bone wine, banned in 1993, has been sold on the Chinese black market for several years now. Illegal trades like this are very easy because of the zoos. The third reason zoos should be illegal is that they can give visitors the wrong idea about animals. Animals will behave differently in the wild from how they will in a closed area. So, if someone came across an animal in the wild, they may think it is safe to approach the animal when it is not. People could easily get hurt.

Humans are animals too. What if animals got smart and decided to capture humans and put them in zoos? So in order to keep the circle of life and continue to have animals be a part of the world, humans must take basic steps to maintain the delicate balance between man and beast.

1Why did the Woburn Safari Park kill many monkeys

A.Because they got seriously ill. B.Because it took much money to keep them.

C.Because they behaved badly. D.Because they couldn't get on well with people.

C.analyzing the reasons D.providing statistics

4What will be most probably talked about next

A.What if animals decided to capture humans. B.How to protect animals effectively.

C.More example of mistreatment. D.How to create natural environments.

22、Sachin oza always seemed to catch whatever cold and flu germs were flying around. Despite being only in his mid-thirties, he felt out of shape and out of sorts. He realized that if he didn’t make some changes, his immune function would continue worsening with age. “I have a family background of diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease,” adds Oza. “I had to take action.”

But Oza’s lifestyle stood in the way. He clocked long days working in finance in London, with little opportunity to be active or focus on his well-being. His commute from his home in Orpington, Kent, to the office was stressful and time-consuming, and he was spending far too many hours stuck behind his desk.

Oza’s increasingly sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle had repercussions. In addition to catching bugs easily, he lacked energy, his body ached, and he felt lethargic. “My immune system was really weak,” recalls Oza. “I knew that I shouldn’t be feeling this way before even hitting 40.”

So he began a 15-year journey to examine his health fully. He conducted some changes to his diet, introducing more raw fruits and vegetables and cutting down on junk food. He started going for runs and began regular training, resistance training, and stretching. He also became interested in mindfulness, practising deep-breathing and meditation.

Now 49, Oza feels like a new man. “I catch colds far less frequently than before,” he says. His aches and pains have eased, his stress levels are lower, and he sleeps soundly. “I no longer wake up in the early hours, which has made a huge difference in how I feel.”

There are many factors affecting the immune system that we can’t control — ageing weakens our immune function, for example, and we have individual genetic differences that affect how we deal with diseases.

【1】What was the barrier for Oza to make changes before?

A.His immune system.

B.His family background.

C.His unfavourable lifestyle.

D.His weak health situation.

【2】What does the underlined word “lethargic” mean?

A.Puzzled.

B.Sleepy.

C.Unconfident.

D.Energetic.

【3】How has Oza regained health?

A.By taking a 15-year journey.

B.By giving up his job in London.

C.By eating raw fruits and vegetables.

D.By changing diets and keeping training.

【4】What do you think of Oza according to his experience?

A.Busy.

B.Determined.

C.Intelligent.

D.Dull.

23、Can we give a hand to those endangered animals? Yes, we may only do a little bit, but together our small actions add up to a lot.

1. Protect wildlife habitat

Perhaps the greatest threat that faces many species is the widespread destruction of habitat. Cutting down forests, farming, and development all result in loss of wildlife habitat. In areas where rare species live, habitat destruction can quickly force a species to extinction. By protecting habitat, entire communities of animals can be protected together naturally. Parks and reserves are now all too often the only habitats that are left untouched by habitat destruction.

2. Reduce the threat of invasive species

The spread of nonnative species has greatly reduced native populations around the world. Invasive species compete with native species for resources and habitat. They can even prey on native species directly, forcing native species towards extinction.

3. Place decals on windows

It is reported that as many as one million birds in the United States die each year because of collisions with windows. You can help reduce the number of collisions simply by placing decals on the windows in your home and office.

4. Slow down when driving

Many native animals have to live in developed areas and this means they must move in humanliving areas. One of the biggest obstacles to them is that created by roads. Roads divide habitat and present a constant risk to any animal attempting to cross from one side to the other. So when you drive out, slow down and keep an eye out for wildlife.

【1】What would be the best title for this passage? ________

A.How animals go to extinction

B.The importance of protecting wildlife

C.What to do to help save wildlife

D.How to protect wildlife habitat

【2】People are advised to put decals on windows to________.

A.decorate the houses and beautify the environment

B.protect the windows from birds hitting

C.attract more birds to make homes nearby

D.avoid birds hitting the windows by mistake

【3】The underlined phrase “prey on” in the passage means ________.

A.drive away

B.live with

C.kill for food

D.fight with

【4】We can learn from the passage that________.

A.the habitats of many species have been destroyed

B.about one million birds are attacked by invasive species each year

C.perhaps the biggest threat to many species is that they are easily bumped by cars

D.invasive species only compete for food with native species

24、More than 90 percent of global trade today is carried out through ships — about 53,000 business ships trading internationally. That number seems to increase quickly. A 2019 study, led by researchers at McGill University in Canada, has predicted (预测) an increase in ocean traffic of anything between 240 and 1209 percent by 2050. In preparation for this increase, scientists and engineers around the world are dealing with the difficult question of how to navigate (航行) more safely.

On the west coast of the US, one such group has a single target-whales. The region is home to not only busy international ports but also the rich feeding grounds of blue, humpback and fin whales. As a result of crossovers, ship strikes are thought to be one of the leading causes of death for whale populations.

Dr Briana Abrahms, a research ecologist at NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center, is developing an app that will allow managers and ship members to be alarmed to the possible location of blue whales. It is based on the group’s new model which predicts whale movements based on the oceanographic conditions. “Ocean conditions can change on a daily basis,” Abrahms explains. “We know what conditions the whales like, so every single day we can look at where those conditions are and predict where the whales will go.”

Of course, knowing where the whales are is hardly effective if captains ignore the information. Abrahms admits that voluntary slow-down plans for large ships on the east coast of the US (slower ships being less likely to kill whales) have seen low levels of obedience (遵守). Her hope is that more accurate data will encourage owners and managers to respond. “Part of the reason we think for the low obedience is that there isn’t much confidence among the shipping industry. If you say ‘slow down between July and November’, the shipping industry doesn’t believe that there is actually a whale there. By making it more accurate in predicting whales, we’re hoping our app will help,” Abrahms said.

【1】Why does the author mention the 2019 study in Paragraph 1?

A.To tell the importance of shipping industry.

B.To show the fast increase in global trade.

C.To predict ocean traffic in the following years.

D.To explain the necessity of ensuring sailing safety.

【2】What’s the app designed for?

A.Counting the number of whales.

B.Telling possible locations of whales.

C.Predicting the consequence of ship strikes.

D.Forecasting the oceanographic condition.

【3】What’s Abrahms attitude towards the present slow-down plans?

A.Critical.

B.Positive.

C.Concerned.

D.Unclear.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Ways to avoid crossovers between ships and whales.

B.Methods of predicting severe weather.

C.Importance of rescuing wildlife in the sea.

D.Challenges of keeping a correct voyage.
