二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The last time the horse seriously competed with man-made transport for speed was 1830, when a stagecoach won a race against America’s first domestically manufactured steam locomotive (蒸汽机车).

Now horsekind has emerged victorious over what is in theory a far more powerful opponent — the broadband internet connection.

The contest over the gently rolling hills of the Sauerland, a pretty district in western Germany, started as a joke.

Klaus-Peter Kappest, a photographer from Oberkirchen, had been frustrated for years by the slow pace of his uploads. At 15 megabits (比特,一种信息量单位) per second, it sometimes takes him several hours to send a batch of high-resolution images to his clients. One day Mr Kappest, 52, was chatting to his colleagues at Woll, a local magazine. He suggested that he would be better off delivering his photographs by horse. “That was the most reliable communications technology in the Middle Ages,” he said. “And the editor said, ‘Well let’s do it then, let’s see which is truly faster.”

Mr Kappest turned to Jakob Schutte, a rider who lives in the same village, and Favo, his horse. The photographer burnt 4.2GB of images on to a DVD, packed it into a bag and sent it off with Favo and Mr Schutte on the 10km ride to the printer’s office in Schmallenberg.

At the same time he uploaded the data through WeTransfer, a popular file-sharing service. The computer had a 20-minute head start while Mr Schutte started off down the road, past Wilzenberg mountain. Favo made the journey in 104 minutes. The file transfer, however, was not finished until the horse had returned to Oberkirchen more than two hours later. In total it took five hours.

There was a serious point behind the story. Germany has long been known for its poor broadband and mobile internet coverage, particularly in the countryside. Two years ago a report by a network regulator found that 29 per cent of internet users received less than half the speed to which they were contractually entitled. While things have improved, a global survey carried out this year found that it took on average 16 minutes and eight seconds to download a 5GB film through a German internet connection—a little better than the UK but worse than Puerto Rico and Barbados.

In the Sauerland, Mr Kappest’s area, millions of euros have been spent on a new network but the connections have yet to be switched on in dozens of towns and villages, including Oberkirchen. The horse race did its job: Mr Kappest has since been assured that his broadband will be up and running next month.

22、As I was riding my bike through a poor neighborhood in Argentina today, I saw a man sitting on the doorstep of his shabby house. I wondered why someone like him does not have motivation to clean up his house and his neighborhood. This is a common sight in poor countries I have seen it in Peru, Ecuador and Indonesia, for example.

I then thought of Daniel Goleman’s model of emotional intelligence(EI). He thinks the ability to motivate yourself is a sign of emotional intelligence. So would he say that all the poor people in the world who lack motivation to improve themselves or their community are not emotionally intelligent?

I am not sure why he thinks someone living in poverty would lack motivation. But I think it has little to do with emotional intelligence. The children I have seen and taught in such poor neighborhoods are more motivated and energetic than their parents. For most of them, their motivation will be slowly killed over the years. There are many reasons for this. One of the prime reasons is fear. Their parents are afraid. They don’t take risks. They don't try new things. If they don’t try things, they won’t feel successful. Success breeds success but these children won’t see many models of success. And they will probably be told “no” over and over. It is not my intent here to explain the many reasons why a child’s motivation is killed. Right now I just want to call attention to this problem with Goleman’s model.

In conclusion, I suggest we dismiss Goleman’s idea that motivation is part of one’s emotional intelligence. We should look for other reasons why a person may or may not feel motivated. Then we will learn more by this than by simply saying they are or aren’t emotionally intelligent.

D.Motivation shouldn’t be simply tied to EI.

23、   Italy and China has agreed to jointly advance the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) (一带一路), which aims to build a trade and infrastructure network to connect Asia with Europe and Africa along ancient trade routes. Italy will use this opportunity to cooperate with China to develop its northern ports and the InvestItalia program, and promote cooperation in all fields.

Despite some skepticism, the BRI has developed into one of the world’s largest cooperation platforms and become a hot public good. More than 120 countries and 29 international organizations have signed agreements with China up to date, bringing all sorts of development opportunities to parties of the BRI, including the construction of Kenya’s first high-speed expressway, the first cross-sea bridge in the Maldives, and the formation of the car industry in Belarus.

The inclusion of Italy into the BRI makes Italy the first G7 country to formally join the Initiative, and sets a new milestone in the process of building the Belt and Road.

What makes the BRI unique is that it is an initiative for win-win cooperation rather than zero-sum competition. As everyone knows, the BRI has its origin in the ancient Silk Road trade route that linked China with many places in the world, including the Italian cities of Rome and Venice. Italy is a natural fit for the ambitious project because of its historical connections with China, and also because of the need to be open rather than closed, to cooperate rather than confront. In this fast-changing world, seeking win-win progress is the best path forward for all countries.

In China, it is said that without a big breakthrough in thinking, there will be no big leap in practice; and without a big leap in practice, there will be no great development. A number of Chinese ideas and initiatives have been formed with the goal of building a community of common destiny in mind. Under the BRI, we can expect China to deepen policy coordination, facilities connectivity, free trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds.

The revival of China as a great power is a blessing to the world, contributing to the building of a better world.

1How does the author develop the second paragraph?

A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By reasoning and analyzing. D.By describing important events.

2What can we learn from the last but one paragraph?

A.China has become a superpower.

B.China puts others’ interests before its own.

C.China has been seeking development for all.

D.China is well-known for its traditional ideas.

3What does the underlined part “zero-sum competition” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Only one participant will win.

B.None of the participants will win.

C.All participants will gain something.

D.Some participants will win at the cost of others.

4What is best title of the passage?

A.The revival of China as a great power

24、Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, beginning in the 1970s, pioneered a method of planting young native species close together to quickly create tiny forests on urban wasteland. He found that protected areas around temples in Japan contained a huge variety of native plants that co-existed to produce adaptable and diverse ecosystems. The forests were layered together from four categories of native plantings: main tree species, sub-species, bushes, and ground-covering herbs. Using this four-category system, along with his explorations of the vegetation in Japan, Miyawaki designed his own system for planting forests.

Miyawaki forests can grow into mature ecosystems in just 20 years-about 10 times the growth speed of a traditional forest, explained Kazue Fujiwara who worked with Miyawaki. According to Fujiwara, the planting should center on the primary trees of the location. Native species require no maintenance (养护) after the first two years and are more likely to survive and grow well in the local environmental conditions. What's more, they provide an ideal home for endangered species.

When Shubhendu Sharma learned about Miyawaki's forest creation technique in 2009, the botanist created a forest at the Toyota factory in India where Sharma worked as an engineer. Shortly, he started a company to create similar forests, researching the method and trying it in his own backyard. He described his work in a 2014 TED Talk, and released his version of the instructions so anyone could learn how to create their own small native forest. Since then, Sharma's company, Afforestt, has helped plant forests in 44 cities.

Now, Miyawaki-style urban forests have been springing up across Europe. Cities in Asia are embracing the idea, with Pakistani minister announcing plans for 50 Miyawaki forests in Lahore, and Indian officials setting a target to plant 1,000 in Chennai.

【1】What inspired Miyawaki to develop his method of planting forests?

A.A lack of urban green space.

B.The forests near the temples.

C.A drop of biodiversity in Japan.

D.The existence of much wasteland.

【2】What advantage does Miyawaki forest have over a conventional one?

A.It grows much faster.

B.It is maintenance-free.

C.It remains resistant to any disease.

D.It is easier to live with invasive species.

【3】What can be inferred about Sharma from the text?

A.He popularized the method.

B.He ran a woodwork business.

C.He wrote a book on Miyawaki.

D.He enjoyed seeing urban sights.

【4】What does the underlined word "embracing" mean in the last paragraph?
