21、 I moved to the United States as a teenager. The adjustment to a new place was difficult. But there was major stress in my life at that time: I was the only member of my family who spoke English, meaning I had to step up when we dealt with a shop assistant, a waiter and so on. However, there was another universal language I loved to learn as a child: art.
Although I connected myself with drawing and painting while in school, I mostly dismissed art as a path to a career. Since my dad always said "Think about the future", I did not think he would support the study of art once I went to college. But, to my surprise, it was my parents who suggested just that and urged me to apply to technical and liberal arts schools.
I was admitted into industrial design. It's basically to design products and services. I could be doing something more technical or something more related to problem-solving. It was no easy task to do the course including metalworking, woodworking and model making. In one class I just drew cubes for an entire month, which led me to a question:"Wow! Do I really want to do this? "But I finally survived the course.
Now I am a design strategist for Marshall Moya Design, a famous architecture and interior design company. I have experience in exhibit design, product design and website design, apart from which I enjoy developing public art in my free time.
Throughout my career,I've picked up different things along the way. The best way to learn in my opinion is through working, therefore, get as many projects as you can. Industrial design kind of makes you an all-round person.

22、 For years and years people have been saying that railways are dead. “We can do without railways,” people say--as if motorcars and planes have made those railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, lose money and are dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil, railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What’s more, a railway takes you from the city centre into another centre. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.
Far from being dead, railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are travelling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, which are travelling at 250 miles an hour or more. So we will be wondering why we spend so much on motorcars we can't use and planes we can't fly in. After all, we have not enough money to buy the oil.

24、As one of the most-widely used languages in the world, English is thought to be much easier to learn than others. Now Limor Raviv, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute,is trying to find why.
Raviv designed an experiment and asked groups of different sizes to create a new language to describe different scenes. During the experiment, the"speakers" saw a scene on their screen and then typed in nonsense words to describe it Then the "listener,"would guess it by selecting one of eight scenes on their own screen. The group could receive one point for every successful guess. Raviv discovered that group size affected the result The larger groups created languages with more systematic(系统的) grammars than the smaller ones, which mad it easier to guess the meanings of new words. She concluded from the experiment that the size of a community affects the development of a language.
Other studies also show languages spoken in larger communities usually have more systematic grammatical structures. The reason is to solve the difficulty in communicating with more people that they are unfamiliar with. Then it will make the language simple."When there's more contact with strangers, the language will become easier.Languages developed by large communities enable strangers to immediately use their languages and understand each other" Raviv said.
Although English might have a larger vocabulary, its grammatical structure is relatively easy to follow. This is why the structure of English is quite simple when compared to many other languages. So today,English is widely spoken and over one billion people speak it as a second language. After all,it's really easy to learn.
【1】How did the "listeners"win the points in the experiment?
A.By choosing the right scenes.
B.By drawing the same shapes
C.By speaking out the correct rules.
D.By typing in the suitable words
【2】What can we infer about the experiment result?
A.All groups formed similar grammar systems
B.The smalle groups created more useful words
C.Each group folowed the same grammar rules.
D.The larger groups had more successful guesses
【3】What makes English widely spoken according the text?
A.A large vocabulary.
B.Easy pronunciations
C.Simple grammars
D.Regular communication
