二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Strangely enough, music is no fun at all for some people. About four percent of the population is what scientists call "amusic", People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. "I used to hate parties," says Margaret, a seventy-year- old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic.

By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn't involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can't see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is final diagnosed. For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. "When people invite me to a concert, I just say, No, thanks, I am amusic',"says Margaret. "I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy. "

22、Most kids hate to see their summer end, perhaps none more than the Murset children. This summer, the Murset family decided to travel across the country to help families in need, which proved to be a wonderful experience.

People. comreported that Gregg Murset and his wife, Kami, decided to take their six children, ranging from 7 to 16 years old, from their home in Phoenix, Arizona, across the country to spend 20 days on the road to help 25 families in need. “I told the kids and my wife over breakfast that I wanted to do this,” Gregg Murset, 40, told People. com. “They all looked at me like I was crazy,” he said, “but when we started to read the stories of people we were going to help, their attitudes completely changed.”

Through Gregg’s company, he was able to be matched with groups such as Autism Speaks, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and others that connected the Mursets to families with children who have cancer and other serious illnesses.

“When you have a kid who is struggling, the last thing you’re thinking of is cleaning the house,” says Gregg.

The family traveled to many cities in their journey, including Albuquerque, Denver, Kansas City, Chicago, and Buffalo. The trip covered 6,500 miles. “It’s been amazing to watch my own children open their eyes and see that the world is bigger than they think,” he said. “Even the little kids are learning from this experience.”

And the families they’ve helped feel blessed to have met them. “They showed up at 8 a.m. and we had a list of things we needed help with,” said Jim Spencer, a 61-year-old father in Warren, Michigan, whose 12-year-old daughter, Lexi, was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer a couple of years ago.

The Mursets also used their travels as an opportunity to visit areas they had never been to, including the Statue of Liberty. But for Gregg, the main purpose of the trip was to teach his children to show concern for the happiness of other people rather than for themselves.

“There is nothing wrong with your kid getting off the sofa, doing some work and sweating,” said Gregg. “It’s good for the kid and it’s good for the soul.”

23、“Practice makes perfect” is a very popular expression. However, can we take this saying literally?

One popular theory (理论) is that if a person practises for at least 10,000 hours, they will reach “perfection”—or, in other words, become an expert in their field. This theory was made famous by Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 best-selling book, Outliers: The Story of Success. He gave the examples of the music group The Beatles and Microsoft co-creator Bill Gates, who clearly put in over 10,000 hours of practice before they became successful.

However, Gladwell’s book has been said by many to be too simplistic and generalising. Although Gladwell’s work was largely based on research done by Anders Ericsson, Ericsson argued that 10,000 hours was just an average figure. Some people, for example, needed far fewer than 10,000 hours, and others many more. More importantly, Ericsson said that just practising a lot was not enough; the type and quality of practice were also significant. He went on to explain the importance of “deliberate practice”, which is when a person practises a specific part of a skill in depth rather than practising a skill as a whole. Deliberate practice is said to be much more effective, though more tiring.

Many other studies argue that practice alone is far from enough. In fact, a more recent study from Princeton University stated that practice only accounted for up to 26% of reaching an expert level. Many other factors contribute to people becoming experts. Natural talent is an important factor, which is especially evident in sports. For instance, many baseball players in America have amazing vision that allows them to see the ball much sooner than others do. Besides, IQ, personality, attitude, and starting age are decisive factors, too. It is also important to note that becoming an expert doesn’t equal instant success. Success also relies on social factors, environmental factors, and even just being in the right place at the right time!

In conclusion, practice may not make perfect, but deliberate practice has been shown to lead to significant improvement.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段使之构成一个完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

George’s mother was very poor and was sick. Instead of having bright fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees.

One fine day in July, his sick mother sent him to the woods. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could collect.

It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard, so by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and have his meal. While he hunted for a spot on the bank he saw among the grass some fine, wild strawberries.

“How good these will be with my bread and butter!” thought George. Lining his cap with leaves, he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the river.

It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his sick mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark room in the village.

George thought of all this, and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, “How much Mum would like these!” So he stopped, and put the strawberry back again.

“Shall I save them for her?” he said, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing eye.

“I will eat half, and take the other half to her, ” he said at last, and he divided them into two heaps (堆). But each heap looked so small that he put them together again.

“I will only taste one,” he thought. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. “I will keep them all for her,” he said with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely to take them home.

Paragraph 1:

He stood up and started to get more and more wood until the sun was beginning to sink.
