22、I noticed two male bluebirds. They appeared to be helping a female with a group of newly-born birds. I wanted to know if one of the males was an invader (入侵者). This is the fun of bird watching — you never know when you’ll find something exciting and unusual.
Like 90% of the bird world, one male bluebird pairs with only one female, and together they raise a family. But sometimes a third adult shows up and helps the pair raise the young. Often it is a relative. The most likely reasons a lone bluebird becomes a “helper bird” are that it either has lost its mate (配偶) or failed to get one during the mating season.
Both the mated pair and the helper get some advantages when helping happens. Every time the helper brings food to the nest (巢), one of the parents is free to take care of its own needs for a few minutes. Helpers also protect the nest by driving away possible enemies. The helper’s gain is less direct but equally valuable. He or she (helpers can be male or female) learns how to be a parent. Though raising babies is natural, skilled parents usually are more successful.
The Florida scrub jay is a kind of bird living in the U.S. state of Florida. Many pairs of Florida scrub jays “have” one to six helpers. Usually the helpers are older children, and they do their job very well. Nests with helpers have 50% more young than nests without helpers (about half the jays don’t use helpers). Helping in scrub jays seems related to a shortage of nesting habitats. Young jays must wait for older birds to die to get a nest. During the time, they help raise their younger brothers and sisters.
【1】Why may a bluebird be a helper for other bird pairs?
A.It has no mate of its own.
B.It wants to be a parent itself.
C.It wants to live in others’ nests.
D.It is good at raising baby birds.
【2】What advantage does a helper bird get from being a helper?
A.Practicing building nests.
B.Being an experienced parent.
C.Having its own needs satisfied.
D.Finding a mate as soon as possible.
【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Florida scrub jays are an endangered species.
B.Some Florida scrub jays will die without a nest.
C.Florida scrub jays need great help from humans.
D.More young Florida scrub jays survive with helpers.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Bluebirds share nests.
B.Animals are human-like.
C.Helper birds feed and raise young of others.
D.Bird watching brings people close to nature.
23、Some people are so rude!
Who sends an email or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello. Email, too, is slower than a text. Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.
My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mail?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”
In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask onceacceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thankyou email.
How to handle these differing standards? Easy. Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thankyou message. Others, like me, want no reply.
The anthropologist (人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that timewasting forms of communication do.
【1】What does the underlined word “Exasperated” mean in the fifth paragraph?

C.Annoyed.
D.Tired.

B.He enjoyed checking his voice mail.
C.He didn’t receive any voice mail messages.
D.He didn’t want to talk with his father.
【3】Which of the following does the writer agree to?
A.People needn’t learn from one another in traditional societies.
B.Dealing with voice mail should vary with each individual.
C.People needn’t turn to Google for help when in trouble.
D.Declaring who you are or saying hello in texts is necessary.
【4】What’s the best title for this passage?
A.Nowadays: what should we do with text messages?
B.Nowadays: do you like leaving others a voice message?
C.Nowadays: what means should we use in communication?
D.Nowadays: do you need a thankyou message?
24、The Internet is playing a more and more important role in schools and other cases. We know schools now are almost all connected to the Internet. But some have more technology, and use it more than others. For example, some schools use computers for activities like video conferencing (会议) to bring the world into the classroom.
And some classrooms are equipped with things like a Smart Board, a kind of interactive (互动的) whiteboard. Interactive whiteboards are large displays for presentations. They connect to a computer and can operate by touch. They can be used for documents or writing or to project videos.
Some teachers are trying creative new ways to teach with devices like iPods and mobile phones. But educators say the most important thing, as always, is the content (内容,容量).
Yet technology can have special importance in some cases. Cosmobot is a therapy (治疗) robot. It stands about half a meter tall and has a blue body and a friendly face with big eyes.
One child who works with it is six-year-old Kevin Fitzgerald. Kevin has developmental dyspraxia;he has difficulty moving his mouth and tongue.
He works with Carole Semango-Sprouse as he interacts with the Cosmobot during therapy for his condition. Here, he uses a set of buttons attached to a computer to make the silent robot move forward, backward or around in circles. Kevin’s mother thinks the robot has had a calming influence, helping her son get along better with his friends.
Cosmobot was developed by AnthroTronix. Corinna Lathan started the company more than ten years ago to work with children with developmental disabilities. Children become friends with the robot, she says. That can have a big effect on their behavior, helping them work harder and longer in therapy sessions. Corinna Lathan is currently working with a British company to develop other socially helpful robots. She says they are still considered research tools in the United States, and not used as much as in places like Britain and Japan. But she hopes to change that.
