21、12 year old Skyla wanted to do something nice for the health care workers who cared for her beloved great grandmother hospitalized with the flu. It was the nurses who got the sick great-grandmother up from the hospital bed to see Skyla and her mother outside when they went to hold up homemade signs outside the hospital windows.

Wanting to do something special for the health care workers, Skyla created the McAllen Nurse Care Kit Project, filling gallon-sized bags with treats ranging from chips to pens and notepads. Each bag, with a handwritten card thanking them for their hard work and devotion, was delivered to Edinburg Regional Hospital, where her great-grandmother was treated. “So they have something to snack on during their lunch break if they don’t have anything with them, and they also contain a handwritten card to show that we thank them,” Skyla said.

Skyla invited some of her fellow troop members from the McAllen Girl Scouts Service Unit to help. After creating 213 kits with friends and family, the girls packed an additional 200—bringing the total to 413 kits for the hospital.

“I’m just proud that she took the time because it was hours, from the packing of the kits to organizing and writing those handmade cards,” said Skyla’s mother. “I’m really glad she us able to have this experience because this summer wasn’t the same as it is usually, but it sounded good that we made it a little bit more influential to the community.”

23、In today’s Internet age, the demand for online games continues to grow. Online computer game centers exist in many cities and towns throughout Asia. Facing the pressures of school and life, people tend to the virtual world, expecting a diversion from these problems. Too often, however, they can lead to problems and unhealthy addictions.

This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. The country has the world’s highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number of online game players and related problems. In 2002, a young man collapsed and died while playing online games. He had been playing almost non-stop for 86 hours at an Internet café. Another young man killed his sister after becoming confused between the online world and real life. A 12-year-old boy stole US $ 16,000 from his father and ran away from home. He did this to continue his obsession with an online game. Such problems, however, don’t just happen in South Korea. They are spreading to other parts of Asia as well.

What kinds of people develop online game addiction? What does the problem look like? Dr. SueHuei Chen, a clinical psychologist, researches Internet addiction. She discovered some signs of at-risk individuals such as lack friendships and good social skills. Those problem individuals feel it so compulsive to play online games that they could sacrifice things such as school or family. They feel the need to spend more and more time online. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing.

How many problem game players are there? In mainland China, the potential number of problem online gamers is alarming. In 2004, the China daily reported that China had 13.8 million online game players. Besides, it stated that 80 percent of these were under 25 and had signs of addiction. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.

Make sure to keep control over your online game playing. If you don’t control it, it can get control of you.

24、   The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he had about 40 years on his classmates in my class. He eagerly jumped into class discussions, with his self-deprecating humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ opinions, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile-and he left with one too.

One day, Valencia said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money from construction jobs and have his student-loan papers in order. But he said he was still coming to campus to attend events or see friends. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.

Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit. No problem, he said.

Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, front and center, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles – a 63-year-old junior with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.

“Here he is, willingly taking a class for the joy of it and benefit of learning,” says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year old junior. “You may not see that in our generation.”

Valencia showed up and took the final exam too. Afterward, I overheard Valencia say he wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.

Twelve years? He was in and out of school, he said, subject to his work schedule and whether he had money for classes. He had earned his associate of arts degree over the summer, then transferred to Cal State LA to start on his bachelor’s.

All Mum’s Letters

To this day I remember my mum’s letters. It all started in December 1941. Every night she sat at the big table in the kitchen and wrote to my brother John, who had been drafted that summer. We had not heard from him since the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

I didn’t understand why my mum kept writing to John when he never wrote back.

“Wait and see, we’ll get a letter from him one day,” she claimed. I didn’t know if she said that to calm herself, Dad or all of us down. But I did know that it helped us stick together, and one day a letter really did arrive. John was alive on an island in the Pacific.

Whenever Mum had finished a letter, she gave it to Dad for him to post it. Then she put the water on to boil, and we sat down at the table and talked about the good old days of our big family.

Next spring Mum had two more sons to write to. Little by little the rumour about Mum’s letters spread. One day a small woman knocked at outdoor. Her voice trembled as she asked: “Is it true you write letters?”

“I write to my sons.”

“I don’t know how to write.” whispered the woman. “And you can read too?”

“Sure.”

The woman opened her bag and pulled out a pile of airmail letters. “Read...please read them aloud to me.”

The letters were from the woman’s son who was a soldier in Europe, a red-haired boy whom Mum remembered having seen sitting on the stairs in front of our house. Mum read the letters one by one. The woman’s eyes welled up with tears. “Now I have to write to him,” she said. But how was she going to do it?
