22、   Annette Larkins is an incredible woman who looks like a healthy 40-year-old, although she just turned 70. She follows a special raw diet and only drinks rainwater.

She looks so young that people mistake her to be the daughter, when she’s out with her husband of 54 years, but I suppose he isn’t complaining.

Mrs. Larkins says the secret to her beauty lies in her special diet, consisting of organic vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts grown in her own garden; she calls it the “fountain of youth”. The woman doesn’t touch anything that has been cooked.

And another strange thing she does is to collect rainwater, to keep her garden blossoming, but also to drink. But the residents of Miami-Dade County, Florida, didn’t always have such a healthy lifestyle. In fact, she consumed meat regularly, as her husband used to own a meat factory way back in the 1960s. It was then that she decided to change her eating habits forever. And what a great decision that was. I mean, just look at her!

When she started off, Mrs. Larkins was just looking for a few health benefits and never anticipated that she would look like a 40-year-old at the age of 70. Over the 27 years that she has been eating raw, Mrs. Larkins has written two booklets railed Journey to Health and also produced a DVD containing all her healthy secrets.

Her husband, Mr. Larkins, wishes he had followed her example, because now he looks much, much older and also suffers from diabetes(糖尿病)and high blood pressure. He takes prescription medicine every day, but Annette doesn’t even take an aspirin.

23、   Albert Einstein, the genius behind the theory of relativity, which provided a new framework for all of physics and proposed new concepts of space and time, has recently been making headlines again. However, this time it is not for a new scientific breakthrough, but because of two handwritten notes the scientist gave a bellboy 95 years ago.

The story goes something like this. In October 1922, Einstein was invited to Tokyo to deliver lectures. As the scientist was making his way from Europe to Japan, he received a telegram informing him that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. Though pleased at the news, he decided to continue with his Japanese trip instead of heading to Stockholm to accept the honor.

When in Tokyo, he penned two notes in German. One of them, written on a piece of plain paper, said, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Why did Einstein write the notes? Some believe they were to express Einstein’s delight at the reception he received from the people of Japan who crowded to attend the laureate’s (获奖者)lectures. Others think they were specially written for a bellboy who came to deliver a message, either because the scientist did not have loose change to tip him, or because the messenger refused to accept tips. Regardless of the reason, Einstein purportedly told the bellboy, “Maybe if you are lucky, those notes will become much more valuable than just a regular tip.” He was right!

Earlier this year, the bellboy’s nephew decided to part with the letters and handed them to Winner’s Auctions and Exhibitions. The “theory of happiness” brought the owner an astonishing $1.56 million from a European buyer. The second note, which opened at $1,000, and expected to fetch a maximum of $6,000, sold for $240,000!

1What made Einstein become people’s focus again?

A.The theory of relativity. B.His new concepts of space.

C.The notes written by himself. D.His notes about his theory.

2Where did Einstein write the words?

A.Bern. B.Stockholm.

C.Germany. D.Japan.

3How were Einstein’s lectures?

A.They had a great effect. B.They attracted a lot of people.

C.They successfully inspired people. D.They were hard to understand.

4How might the owner of the notes feel about the deal?

A.Disappointed. B.Curious.

C.Unfair. D.Unexpected.

24、   Under the impression that if you want to lose weight, you have to eat less? Well apparently, the solution may not be quite that simple.

Instead, some scientists in the UK have been experimenting with ways to trick the body into feeling full.

A government-funded team has been testing simple foods found on everyday shopping lists. Bread, cheese, milk, soup and sauces can all be developed to cause the brain to send a brain signal which acts as an appetite suppression (抑制).

Peter Wilde, Scientist of UK Institute of Food Research, said, “If you can slow down the digestion of fat in the body, the undigested fat goes further down the small intestine and then it sends a message to the brain to reduce your appetite, so you can eat a normal-sized meal and the digestion is slowed down and then the message goes to your brain to reduce your appetite and you go for longer without being hungry.”

The researchers insist that the treated foods will still be entirely natural products, and free from processing.

They believe helping people to reduce weight this way is beneficial because it allows them to eat normally. The scientists also think their treatment could be taken into snacks to make sure people don’t eat too much.

The research is still at the experimental stage and it will be at least a year before their techniques can be used in a large scale human trial.
