21、Improving as a runner is about more than just running all of the time. You need to pay a little attention to details and make a smart training plan. 【1】, no matter what your sport, race, or running habits.

Alternate easy and hard runs to build strength rapidly. It is common for runners to push themselves about the same amount each time and gradually increasing difficulty. 【2】. It is during these difficult runs, when you really push yourself, that your body snakes the most significant gains. Don’t feel like an easy day is “cheating”. Rather, it is helping rebuild and relax the muscles needed for your big runs.

【3】. You want to keep your chin (下巴) up and your shoulders back, with loose, relaxed arm and hand muscles. Your elbows are bent at 90 degrees but swing freely. If anything, the only muscles you want to focus on keeping strong and tight are the ones in your core (核心). That’s because this will naturally help you efficiently channel energy.

【4】. A higher body temperature ensures your muscles are loose and flexible, and your body is pumping blood effectively throughout. For everything other than easy runs, use the first five to ten minutes to build a light sweat and get your body ready for exercise. Even five minutes of walking is a good way to get started. Slowly pick up speed for short 10 second runs, and then return to normal warm-up pace. 【5】.

A.This helps prepare your muscles for speed

B.Children are often advised to start running at an early age

C.Keep a relaxed but strong upper body to conserve energy efficiently

D.There are two individual sports available, running or tennis

E.Use your light run to work up a light sweat.

F.In that case, you can make large improvements as a runner in a relatively short time

G.Outstanding runners, however, alternate an easy run with a very challenging one

22、One Alahama school was extremely creative in encouraging students to read more and to help improve the school district’s literacy. They added an Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine (售货机) an actual vending machine that allows students to add a special coin and get a brand new book.

Sixth-grade reading teacher Kristy White said students have been inspired to earn coins so they can get a new book. Every classroom has coins, and students can earn them by improving in their reading or math skills or exhibiting good behavior.

Kristy said it only takes one coin to use the machine. Nice! What’s even nicer is there are books for all grade levels and students even make suggestions for titles they’d like to see available. Funding for the vending machine came from community support through donations and grants.

Lucy Williamson was the first student to use the machine. The sixth-grader said she can see the growing excitement of her fellows and she looks forward to getting even more books. “This has some different books that the library doesn’t have and I’m able to keep the book longer because it’s mine so I have more time to read it,” Lucy said. She also shared that she rereads books often, so being able to choose a book that she can take home is a real plus.

Beyond reading, the vending machine has also encouraged students to behave better. And when a student gets a coin, everyone celebrates the win. “The students are thrilled when they are the student who gets the coin that week or one of the students, they come down here and the students cheer for them,” Kristy said.

We’re cheering for them, too! This is such a unique way to motivate students. Reading is so fundamental that it really serves as the foundation for all other learning. This vending machine is just one way to help students succeed.

【1】What does the underlined word “literacy” in paragraph 1 mean?

A.Communication skills.

B.Academic performance.

C.Professional knowledge.

D.Reading and writing ability.

【2】What can we know about the vending machine?

A.It charges students for the special coins.

B.It encourages students’ positive growth.

C.It turns a blind eye to students’ proposals.

D.It aims to raise money for local community.

【3】Why did Lucy commit herself to using the vending machine?

A.To enrich her extra-curricular life.

B.To escape from the school library.

C.To enjoy selecting and rereading books.

D.To gain respect and praise from her fellows.

【4】Which is the suitable title for the text?

A.Kristy White:a Creative Reading Teacher

B.Lucy Williamson: a Model Pupil at School

C.A Unique Way to Inspire Students to Read

D.The Importance of Offering Reading Courses

23、Marianne Hardwick was timid and unadventurous, her energy consumed by physical activity and longing, her intelligence by indecisiveness, but this had less to do with the inborn characteristics of her weaker sex ( as her father, Creighton Montgomery, called it)  than with the enfeebling(使人衰弱的)  circumstances of her upbringing. Creighton Montgomery had enough money to mould (塑造) his daughters according to his misconceptions that girls were not meant to fend for themselves so he protected them from life. What is to say is that Marianne Montgomery grew up without making any vital choices for herself. Prevented from acquiring the habits of freedom and strength of character which grow from decision-making, very rich girls, whose parents have the means to protect them in such a crippling fashion, are the last representatives of Victorian womanhood. Though they may have the boldest manners and most up-to-date ideas, they share their great grandmothers’ humble dependence.

Most parents these days have to rely on their force of personality and whatever love and respect they can inspire to exert any influence over their children at all, but there is still an awful lot of parental authority that big money can buy.  Multi- millionaires have more of everything than ordinary people, including more parent power, and their sons and daughters have about as much opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations(意向) as they would have had in the age of absolute monarchy (君主专制) .

The rich still have families. The great divide between the generations is the state of the lower and middle classes, whose children begin to drift away as soon as they are old enough to go to school. The parents cannot control the school, and have even less say as to what company and ideas the child will be exposed to; nor can they isolate him from the public mood, the spirit of the age. It is an often heard complaint of the middle-class mother, for instance, that she must let her children watch television for hours on end every day if she is to steal any time for herself. The rich have no such problems; they can keep their offspring busy from morning to night without being near them for a minute more than they choose to be, and can exercise almost total control over their environment.

As for schooling, they can handpick tutors with sound views to come to the children, who may never leave the grounds their parents own, in town, in the country, by the sea, unless for an exceptionally secure boarding school or a well- chaperoned (伴护着的)  trip abroad.  It would have been easier for little Marianne Montgomery to go to Cairo than to the nearest newsstand.

【1The author implies that Marianne Hardwick’s timidity were closely associated with ______.

A. the inborn characteristics of the weaker sex

B. the conditions where she was brought up

C. the consumption of her energy

D. her physical activity and longing

【2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Rich girls always share their ideas with their grandmothers.

B. Wealthy children learn at home instead of going to school.

C. Middle-class mothers usually steal time for their children.

D. Rich parents may have more control over their children than the middle-class parents do

【3What can we know about Creighton Montgomery's daughters from the passage?

A. They did not have up-to-date ideas.

B. They were unintelligent.

C. They did not have much freedom.

D. They had no physical activity.

【4It can be learned from the passage that multimillionaires’ children have ______.

A. little opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations

B. absolute opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations

C. more opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations than ordinary children

D. as much opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations as ordinary children

【5What is the main idea of this passage?

A. The rich control their children's lives without being near them.

B. The generation gap only occurs in the lower and middle classes.

C. Rich parents have more authority over their children than poor parents.

D. Rich girls who are being overprotected by their parents are rather dependent.

24、   Calling someone a “birdbrain” is considered rude. It implies that someone has a small brain and thus is not smart. A new study found that the expression doesn’t do birds justice either: Birds’ brains are much bigger than we thought — at least compared to their small bodies.

An international team of 37 scientists measured the brain volume (脑容量) of hundreds of dinosaurs and extinct birds by scanning fossils of their skulls. The readings were compared to a large database containing the brain sizes of modern birds. These measurements were then analyzed, taking into consideration each bird’s body size — resulting in something called “relative brain size”. The results showed that a dramatic change of birds’ body size happened right after the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

According to the study, published on April 23 in the journal Current Biology, birds and dinosaurs had similar brain sizes before the extinction. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, however, birds had to find a way to survive, so they shrank their bodies — since smaller animals need less food — but they kept their big brains.

“The changed landscape may have caused the rapid evolution of new brainbody scaling patterns (缩放比例) by favoring both larger brains and smaller bodies,” US paleontologist (古生物学家) Daniel Ksepka, who is the lead author of the study, told CNN.

This “evolutionary brain leap” — as scientists call it — also happened very rapidly. Without dinosaurs, birds quickly repopulated. They came in all types and sizes, which contributed to the diverse species of birds we see today.

But among all the bird species, certain ones “show above average rates of brain and body size evolution”, study co-author Adam Smith at Clemson University, US, said in a statement — with crows and parrots being the most evident. In fact, previous studies have already discovered that these birds have an amazing cognitive capacity (认知能力). They are able to use tools, imitate human speech and even remember human faces.

So, in the words of Smith, “calling someone ‘birdbrained’ is actually quite a compliment (恭维)”!

【1】How did the scientists learn the brain sizes of dinosaurs and extinct birds?

A.By studying their fossil skulls.

B.By searching the database.

C.By experimenting on their brains.

D.By analyzing their body size.

【2】How did the birds change after the extinction of the dinosaurs?

A.The birds’ bodies shrank as their brains became smaller.

B.The birds’ bodies became larger while their brains became smaller.

C.The birds’ brains remained almost the same as their bodies shrank.

D.The birds’ brains became larger to adapt to the environment.

【3】According to Adam Smith, calling someone “birdbrained” is ________.

A.to make rude remarks

B.to laugh at one’s small body size

C.to praise one’s intelligence

D.to suggest the person is not smart

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

A.To describe how birds’ evolution happened.

B.To explain the origin of the word “birdbrain”.

C.To show the amazing abilities of bird species.

D.To present the latest study on birds’ brain size.
