二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Dogs wag (摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a study has found.

Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behaviour of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time.

The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners — a positive experience — their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd, changed the direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.

22、Growing up in a poor African American neighborhood, Carl Allamby and his five brothers and sisters were raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. He faced low expectations and numerous barriers to pursuing his dream. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学预科班) path, so he set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor.

He had started it at the age of 19, working alone out of a rented bay in a friend’s garage. Over the years, it had grown into two shops with 11 employees, but Allamby had become anxious, longing for something more. So at the age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree. Biology class awakened a childhood dream within himself.

With the support of his wife and family, he soon decided to skip business school in favor of the science classes he’d need for a second career as a health-care worker. Becoming a doctor when he would be approaching the age of 50 was clearly crazy. He would instead become a nurse or a physician assistant like his wife, he thought. But Allamby’s chemistry professor encouraged him to pursue his dream to be a doctor.

And so in 2015, Allamby started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at the age of 47, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. Now Allamby is a second-year resident.

“How many people can do something so brand-new and have so much stimulation and responsibility at such a late stage in their life?” he says, “I am told that I shouldn’t be a doctor. Whether it’s because of my age, my race, my upbringing, or my past career, these are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”

【1】What made Carl fail to become a doctor when he was young?

A.No social barriers.

B.Parents’ being jobless.

C.High expectations from his parents.

D.No advanced science classes in his school.

【2】What awakened Carl’s childhood dream?

D.His professor’s encouragement.

【3】Why did Carl skip business school?

C.To take part-time classes.

D.To support his family.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Carl?

24、   One of the most common questions I am asked is how people should move on from disappointing, challenging or unexpected situations. While there are many answers to this question, one thing that always stands out to me is the process of selfforgiveness. People often focus on learning to forgive others in life and sometimes we are almost blind to the possibility of forgiving ourselves.

It is absolutely natural to feel guilty, shameful and painful if you’ve hurt a loved one, argued with a coworker or you are just not happy with yourself. Forgiveness is not about just “letting go” of those feelings, but dealing with them in a positive manner. As the saying goes, “It’s not the load that breaks you down; it’s the way you carry it.”

The simple act of moving forward can benefit you in the long run: Studies show that an inability to selfforgive can play a role in anxiety and disappointment.

So how to let go of your selfanger?

Accept responsibility for what you’ve done. In this stage, you want to move away from your excuses. Without accepting responsibility, any form of selfforgiveness will be negative.

Adopt a new way of thinking about the mistake. If you carry old bricks from your past experiencesyou can only build the same house that fell apart in the first place. You are more likely to repeat a mistake if you don’t learn from it, and learning requires compassion(同情). When a child falls over, it is lifted up with love and compassion to try again. We must practice this with ourselves.

Take time to appreciate that you can overcome your guilt, selfblame and feelings of pain. Appreciate that you can make changes in your life to avoid similar experiences in the future. Appreciate that you can create a new way of living.

1What does the author want to show by mentioning the saying in Paragraph 2?

A.It’s important to let go of bad feelings.

B.It’s important to stay positive in our life.

C.It’s important to carry the load correctly.

2What does the author think we should do when trying to forgive ourselves?

A.Be willing to accept responsibility. B.Find some excuses for our mistakes.

C.Just let go of negative feelings. D.Learn to have compassion.

3What does the author suggest we do in the last paragraph?

A.We should overcome our guilt. B.We should reduce feelings of pain.

C.We should appreciate our progress. D.We should create a new way of living.

4What would be the best title for the text?

A.Letting Go of Your Anger B.Learning to Forgive Yourself

C.Moving on from Unexpected Situations D.Knowing the Importance of Forgiveness
