21、A study published has modeled the wide-ranging impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on Australia’s food systems and supply chains, identifying potential chain re-actions including job and income loss as well as a loss in nutrient availability and diet quality. Led by Dr Arunima Malik from the Integrated Sustainability Analysis(ISA)group, the paper analyzed the climate change impacts across different sectors and regions in Australia. The researchers found that climate change and extreme weather events have impacts across communities, with rural regions the most negatively impacted.

The study also found that climatic events, such as floods, bush fires and heatwaves could affect surrounding areas by way of limiting food availability and employment. The effects of these events could be felt in distant regions due to the complex inter-connectivity of modern supply chains.

Previous research undertaken by the ISA has shown that a local disaster can impact every other Australian state, resulting in losses across primary, secondary and tertiary industries. What plays out globally seems to play out locally as well. Everyone is affected by climate change, even if they’re not in areas directly hit by extreme weather, and the vulnerable (脆弱的) are affected most.

Damages to food supply can negatively impact diet quality, through reducing the diversity that contributes to a balanced diet to unhealthy processed foods that have a longer shelf life. This disproportionately impacts vulnerable groups, who do not have the means to pay increasing prices for scarce fresh foods.

Co-author Dr Sinead Boylan, a public health nutrition researcher in the Sydney Environment Institute, said, “The research highlights that climate change may not only affect food supply in NSW, but access to healthy and equitable diets, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. These findings could help reform relief strategies to help these communities adapt.”

【1】What can we learn about the study from paragraph 1?

A.The Australian government’s reaction to the study.

B.The influence of the study on the climate.

C.The principle of doing the study.

D.The result of the study.

【2】What does the underlined word “tertiary” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Local.

B.Third.

C.Global.

D.Rural.

【3】How is diet quality affected by damages to food supply?

A.By decreasing food variety.

B.By shortening shelter life of food.

C.By reducing the amount of food supply.

D.By reducing unhealthy processed foods.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Everyone is affected by climate change

B.Climatic events could affect surrounding areas

C.Climate threat to food supply creates chain effect

D.The vulnerable are affected most by climate change

22、   Digital health refers to the system of interconnected devices that can monitor and report important health information. Doctors can use that information to ensure that your treatment is tailor-made to your situation.

The most useful aspect of digital health is the ability to constantly and accurately monitor vital information. Wearable devices can record your blood pressure or the rhythm your heartbeat. The information is then accessible remotely through the Internet , so your doctor has a wealth of information about your daily health. Your doctor can use that information remotely to make changes to your treatment at any time.

A survey conducted by the company Lightico in March 2020, reveals how satisfied consumers are with this type of remote care. Forty-one percent said that the remote treatment they had received by means of digital devices and the Internet was either “good” or “excellent”. The same positive attitude toward digital health can be seen among investors. In the first quarter of 2020 , 3.1 billion dollars in new investment poured into the digital health industry , setting a new investment record.

Advances in digital health, however also bring privacy concerns. Information regarding your health could be used for advertising or marketing , for example. If health records are accessible online, protecting your information from theft and unauthorized use might be difficult. But if managed properly, the benefits of digital health could certainly outweigh the risks.

1What is this article mainly about?

A.The current state of health care training

B.Health conditions that need urgent attention

C.A technological trend in health care

D.Rising pressure on health care workers

2How did Lightico gather information ?

A.It polled(民意调查) individuals to obtain their opinions

B.It launched a popular social media platform.

C.It forced a corporation to release the facts

D.It studied articles published in journals

3According to this article, what happened during the first three months of 2020?

A.A growing number of digital devices were called.

B.Funding for digital health increased considerably.

C.Some digital health firms nearly went out of business.

D.Many institutions devoted effort to medical research.

4According to this article , what is one concern about digital health?

A.Worries about the side effects caused by modern drugs.

B.Rising manufacturing costs in the health care industry.

C.Government regulations limiting the use of digital devices

D.The danger that personal health data could be stolen.

Hong Kong, a city of seven millionand growing fast. By the year 2050 Hong Kong’s population will almost double. Where will these people live?

There’s only one place to goup. Fast forward 50 years. This is the tallest man-made structure on the planet. Its name:Millennium Tower. It would stand twice as tall as anything built before. Over 60 thousand people would live or work here. Millennium’s designers think it represents the best solution for the coming population explosion.

It would cost ten billion dollars and consume more building materials than any single nation could produce. David Nelson, one of Millennium’s key designers, said:“It would be a massive project and a world project. But to actually realize it, resources would have to come from all over the globe. The challenge and the motivation for doing it would be to realize one of the world’s largest and most complex construction projects.

Millennium would be more complex than anything ever built. So its builders won’t know for sure the building is safe until it’s up, and they can’t afford to make an error. Massive earthquakes have brought down entire cities in this part of the world. Can Millennium’s designers make it immune to these quakes of the earth?

For Millennium, like all the other buildings, safety is just one concern among many. It will need to be a home, one that welcomes people in. Getting people into the building and making sure they have a great experience well be what makes Millennium successful, but how to do it? For the design team, the secret was to bring all the elements of city life within. Cafes and restaurants, theatres and stores would provide entertainment. Health clubs, even schools and medical clinics would also serve the towers’ residents.

Millennium’s designers have proven something. Things that seem impossible today, might just become reality tomorrow. The engineering problems have, for the most part, already been solved. Our achievements are limited only by our imaginations.

【1】Why did the designers decide to build Millennium?

A.Because they wanted to build the world’s most complex building.

B.Because Hong Kong’s population will greatly increase.

C.Because Hong Kong is developing fast as an international city.

D.Because it can bring huge profit after it is put to use.

【2】What is TRUE about the project?

A.It will be completed in the year 2050.

B.It can accommodate all the residents in Hong Kong.

C.It is designed by designers from all over the globe.

D.It has to be strong enough to stand earthquakes.

【3】The success of Millennium mainly relies on _______.

A.how many resources will be used

B.how many nations will work together

C.whether people can enjoy their life in it

D.whether it is safe for people to live in

【4】How does the writer develop this passage?

A.By providing descriptions.   B.By using figures.

C.By giving examples.     D.By analyzing causes.

24、   MIT researchers have developed a way to incorporate(融入)electronic sensors into fabrics, allowing them to create shirts or other garments that could be used to monitor vital signs such as temperature and heart rate. The sensor-embedded garments can be customized to fit close to the body of the person wearing them.

"We can have electronic parts or lab-made electronics embedded within the textiles that we wear every day, creating comfortable garments," says Dagdeviren, an professor at MIT. His group set out to create garments more similar to the clothes we normally wear, using a fabric that has removable electronic sensors in it.

"In our case, the textile is not electrically functional. It's just a passive element of our garment so that you can wear the devices comfortably during your daily activities," Dagdeviren says. "Our main goal was to measure the physical activity of the body all from the same body part, without requiring any fixture or any tape."

The electronic sensors consist of long flexible strips(细条). These channels have small openings that allow the sensors to be exposed to the skin. For this study, the researchers designed a shirt with 30 temperature sensors and an accelerometer that can measure the wearer's movement, heart rate, and breathing rate. The garment can then transmit(传输)this data wirelessly to a smartphone.

This kind of sensing could be useful for personalized telemedicine, allowing doctors to remotely monitor patients. "You don't need to go to the doctor or do a video call," Dagdeviren says. "Through this kind of data collection, I think doctors can make better assessments and help their patients in a better way."

Last summer, several of the researchers spent time at a factory in Shenzhen, China, to experiment with mass-producing the material used for the garments. “From the outside it looks like a normal T-shirt, but from the inside, you can see the electronic parts which are touching your skin,” Dagdeviren says.

1Why do MIT researchers make sensor-embedded garments?

A.To create garments with medical functions.

B.To satisfy customers' personal need for fashion.

C.To complete their academic tasks.

D.To transform patents for benefits.

2What is the main function of the electronic sensors?

A.Monitoring wearers' behavior. B.Making the skin fully exposed.

C.Adjusting wearers' body temperature. D.Collecting and transmitting health information.

3What do the researchers expect of the garments in the future?

A.They will bring convenience to patients. B.They could be in mass-production soon.

C.They might lead the new fashion. D.They may take the place of doctors.

4What can we infer about wearing a sensor-embedded garment according to Dagdeviren?

A.It's fashionable. B.It's skin-friendly.

C.It's eco-friendly. D.It's awkward.

Unlike previous popular recipients living in Britain, he is not a _______. He could, as he said after the announcement, have reached more readers, but his publications _______ to grant him that. His publisher felt sorry for the fact that he is one of the greatest living African writers; yet no one has ever _______ him, but with this he did not agree: I didnt think I was ignored.

There is a gulf(分歧), here, that has to do with who is doing the looking, and what _______ as officially being noticed. There is also a point of _______: calling Gurnah an African writer. In fact, while that seems to broaden horizons, it narrows and distances what he is doing. Gurnah was born in Zanzibar, and left for Britain when he was 18, _______ regional conflicts for what he hoped would be calmer waters, which turned out to be stronger dark current. He has lived in Britain ever since.

He began and stuck to writing to make sense, to himself, of the shock -- of racism, _______, poverty and loneliness. His ten novels return to it _______, which begins in 1996s Admiring Silence. His work exists because of Britain as well as Zanzibar; it may ________ both or wholly neither. It arrives out of a(n) ________ of English literature (Gurnah is professor of literature at the University of Kent), and his first language, the rhythms and stories of Islam.

________, many of the UKs thirteen Nobel-winning writers were born elsewhere as by 2019, 14% of the UKs population were born abroad. People might also be astonished at how many of those countries were once part of the British empire. Gurnah has spoken of how much of the world is still processing the wounds that colonialism ________, especially the experience of losing your place in the world -- where place is not just ________, but also belonging, status and culture.

In this sense, Gurnahs work, which ________ those who might not have been remembered in history -- shopkeeper, homemakers, students and refugees, could not be more British. But, more importantly, it could not be more universal.
