21、European Day of Languages falls on 26 September. BBC News Online reported the attitudes across several European Union countries to languages.
Tamsin Smith, Rome, Italy
Italians place very high importance on learning languages, particularly English. Twenty years ago it was quite difficult to find an English speaker here but today it is quite easy. The strong influence of American and English culture helps young people to learn the English language. They often become familiar with it through “Harry Potter” books or Disney movies. English schools, where Italian children are taught all their lessons in English, are also becoming popular among rich Italians.
Lucien Libert, Paris, France
Languages are very important in France. A good knowledge of the English language is necessary for many Frenchmen to get a good job and the more languages you can learn, the better. English is the first language you learn in school and you start very young. Most people have at least eight years of learning English at school. Learning German or Spanish comes next and Latin is also taught in most schools. While French people learn languages, there is also a movement to protect the French language.
James Helm, Dublin, Ireland
The English language predominates(占优势) in Ireland, but the ancient Irish language is a lasting source of pride and interest, and it remains a living tongue that is used in several areas. School are required to teach ancient Irish, and most students learn it as part of the subjects. There is a continuing discussion about how to protect the language best. 23、Huang, 24, is a native of Maodao township in Wuzhishan county, South China's Hainan Province. Born into a family of the Li ethnic group, he was exposed to Li culture as a child, especially the ethnic brocade(织绵), which is famous for its bright, striking colors. But he had no idea how to weave it. "My parents are lifetime farmers, and no one in the family rally knew much about weaving the brocade" he said.
Huang did not know much about craftsmanship until he was in high school, when local authorities organized an event to introduce intangible cultural heritage to the school campus in 2016. "I was fascinated instantly, "he said. Since then, he fell in love with Li brocade and became the only boy in his home village who could weave it.
"I developed a genuine and everlasting love for the ethnic craft, but some villagers cannot understand why a man is addicted to weaving, "he says. "They think it's a girl's thing. "Regardless of it, Huang continued chasing after his weaving dream.
The intangible cultural heritage of Librocade dates back to more than 3, 000 years. In line with Li tradition, the weaving techniques are only passed on to women, not to men", as in ancient China, men were supposed to do farm work while women weaved.
In recent years, Hainan education authorities have introduced the traditional craft in local schools, so that the younger generation can understand and learn about the ethnic culture.
When Huang learned of the ancient craftsmanship in high school, he started weaving almost immediately. "I gave my first handmade brocade piece to my teacher to express my gratitude for her guidance. "said Huang.

24、Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Most of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words. Words do provide us with some information, but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it would hinder our effectiveness as a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily on words alone. Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message. Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words. 【1】. Sometimes our words don’t mean anything except “ I‘m letting off some steam. I don’t really want you to pay close attention to what I‘m saying. Just pay attention to what I’m feeling.” Mostly we mean several things at once. A person wanting to purchase a house says to the current owner,“This step has to be fixed before I’ll buy.” The owner says,“ It’s been like that for years.” Actually, the step hasn‘t been like that for years, but the unspoken message is: “ I don’t want to fix it. We put up with it. Why can‘t you?” The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message in terms of who said it, when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said.
【2】. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior. A friend‘s unusually docile behavior may only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormal amount of assertiveness. 【3】 For example, a person who says “No!” to a serials of charges like “You’re dumb, ” “You‘re lazy, ” and “You’re dishonest, ” may also say “No!” and try to justify his or her response if the next statement is “And you‘re good looking.”
【4】 The words, “If sure nice to have you over, ” can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically. The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.
A. We would do well to listen for how messages are presented.
B. Some listeners would often be at a loss and fail in effective communication with the speakers in a conversation.
C. When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning.
D. We don't always say what we mean or mean what we say.
AB. Some responses may directly linked to a developing pattern of responses and defy logic.
AC. The sequence of message occurring is a determining factor to judge whether the pattern of responses sounds logical.
