二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Teamwork has been behind some of humans’ greatest achievements — the Beatles’ biggest hits, putting a man on the moon, and the smartphone.

Does video interaction damage the creative process that led to such achievements? Yes, according to new research published Wednesday that found it’s easier to come up with creative ideas in person.

It’s an answer many employers have been searching for over the past two years, as working from home has become normal during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We firstly started the project in 2016 because we learned from managers that innovation was one of the biggest challenges with video interaction,” said Melanie Brucks, an author of the study.

Brucks said she spent four years exploring whether it really had any influence on people’s ability to produce new ideas. She organized 602 university students and divided them into pairs to work on tasks either in person or online. The tasks included coming up with new uses for everyday things. The performance of each pair was determined by how many ideas they came up with and the value of their ideas as ranked by student judges.

Researchers also found that virtual participants spent more time looking directly at their partner, rather than looking around the room. What’s more, she said pairs who were video-conferencing remembered less of their surroundings.

“This visual focus on the screen narrows cognition. In other words, people are more focused when interacting on video, which hurts the broad, expansive idea producing process. Objects in the room can inspire new ideas easier than trying to produce them in heart,” Brucks said.

Jay Olson, a scholar at MeGill University in Canada, said managers shouldn’t rush to get people back in the office or add more face-to-face meetings as a result of this research. “I wouldn’t want to see a company double their in-person meetings hoping to improve their innovation, if this also means doubling the commute time resulting in less happy — and perhaps less creative — employees.”

【1】What have many employers been wondering?

A.What leads to creative ideas.

B.What damages our creativity.

C.Whether video meetings influence creativity.

D.Whether face-to-face meetings are more effective.

【2】What were the university students asked to do in the experiment?

A.Find some solutions.

B.Present new ideas.

C.Show artistic talents.

D.Make everyday things.

【3】What hurts people’s producing ideas according to Melanie Brucks?

A.Focusing on the screen.

B.Communicating in person.

C.Looking around the room.

D.Doubling the commute time.

【4】What’s Jay Olson’s attitude to adding more in-person meetings?

A.Worried.

B.Unsupportive.

C.Uncaring.

D.Hopeful.

22、The Children’s Book-Show Competition is a chance for young readers to be writers.

Reading, it seems, is coming back in fashion, if a survey by the famous National Literacy Trust (the NLT) is true. It shows that the percentage of children who admit enjoying reading has grown for the first time in the past 8 years.

So it’s a good time to launch a competition that includes a shed-load of new books for schools as prizes. The Children’s Book-show Competition, backedby The Independent, is taking to the roads again from the start of next term, with a nation-wide tour of 15 big cities, featuring a line-up of a dozen children’s writers and illustrators(插图画家)aiming to persuade pupils to follow their footsteps.

The competition, launched by the children’s writer and illustrator Jessica Souhami, has two categories: the under-nine’s and nine to 13-year-olds.

Children are asked to choose their favorite fairy or folk tale and set it in an extraordinary place.

Then they are to retell it with the aid of drawings and writings-whether it is set at sea, on a distant planet, in the future or in the past. The closing date for the competition is 30th November.

“Tell your tale in pictures and in words, ”say the organizers of the competition. “It can be in a picture book or comic-book format.”

The winner of each competition will receive a signed copy of a book by each of the 12 authors involved in this year’s tour, plus £150 worth of books for their school. The runners-up will receive a signed copy of Souhami’s new book.

As an experienced British cyclist and adventure lover, Pete Jones is at present making a long trip across the Eurasian Continent from Britain to China alone. For Pete, camping in the wild and cycling for long distances through inhospitable terrain (不适合人居住的地带) are his second nature.

Mr Jones is currently taking a great journey. Having lived on and off (断断续续地) in Xinjiang for three years, and having visited the country many times since 1992, Pete Jones is no stranger to China. But he says many people there are puzzled by his strong love for cycling, and they ask why he chooses to cycle when he can afford a car. Indeed, while there are about 400 million bicycles in China, where it has long been the preferred means of transport, rapid economic growth has caused an rapid development in car ownership.

Edward Genochio, another British cyclist who completed a 41,000 km trip to China and back, said one of his goals was to tell people cycling is a safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly means of getting about.

In the UK, the last few years have seen a rise in the number of people choosing two wheels over four, with some estimates (估计) saying the number of people cycling to work has almost doubled in the last five years.
