二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、From a young age, Michael Platt loved two things: the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and cupcakes. He imagined ways he too could fight for justice. He memorized figures about income inequality and childhood hunger. But he also spent afternoons at his home computer, amazed by YouTube bakers who made perfect cupcakes.

When his parents gave him a pair of Toms shoes for Christmas three years ago, Michael saw a way to connect his twin passions. At age 11, he founded a bakery that operates on the Toms one-for-one model: For every cupcake, cake or cookie that Michael sells, he donates another to the homeless and hungry. Twice a month, he heads to locations to pass out goodies. Michael, now 13, said he especially enjoys handing out cupcakes to kids.

“I know I like cupcakes, but also cupcakes are part of a child’s childhood so they should get them,” said Michael, noting that he always eats one with whippedicing (打发的糖霜) on his birthday.

Michael calls his baking business Michaels Desserts. He left out the apostrophe (撇号) as a reminder that he is baking for others, not himself. “I always wanted to have a purpose for what I do.” he said. “It’s all about helping people--- not just having a purpose for yourself, but thinking about, ‘How does this touch other things? ”

When he started the bakery, he knew that he wanted his business to do more than make money. That’s why the intention of Michaels Desserts is fighting hunger and giving back, which Michael accomplishes through his giveaways. Michael hopes his cupcakes inspire others to work for social equality.

Sometimes, Michael admits, he grows tired of being in the kitchen. Then he remembers the homeless boy he met once while handing out cupcakes. A couple of days afterward, the boy’s father messaged Michael on Facebook to say that his son, encouraged by Michael’s example, now desired to become a baker.

“That inspired me,” Michael said. He smiled and looked down.

22、   Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn't find shelter for the night.

Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 302018, 34-year-old Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions.

“It was - 20, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,” said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.

For Payne, her mission was  personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan had lived on the streets at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn't step up to help, no one likely would.

However, when Payne explained what she was trying to domany of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn't want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.

Payne's selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention. “I am a regular person, ” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers.“It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side. ”

23、In Return

Recently, as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his high school team, I started to feel sorry for myself and for him. His team was facing adversity(不幸) on the court and he was playing in a bad environment-it was the opponent’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan's team was left behind for three quarters of the game. As for me, I had been fired earlier in the day. A career position I held for 14 years was the victim of corporate restructuring(公司重组). I was prepared for it as I had experienced the same thing 14 years earlier, but, just like a punch in the mouth, the blow is never softened because you were expecting it.

As I watched the adversity on the court that my son was experiencing, I recalled my earlier events, packing up everything in a box and waving goodbye to a great group of colleagues with whom I'd had the pleasure of working. Driving home, I kept telling myself, “I will find work again in a short time-I am confident in my experience and abilities.” It was a belief I repeated to myself during a trying day and it was the same one that I tried to teach my son.

The basketball game entered the fourth quarter. I saw the focus and determination on his face. There was no room for self-doubt. He fought back to go ahead by three points. After he made the basket, his team was able to hang on and stop the other team from scoring, and won the game. Nathan's joy on his face, the cheering from the crowd, the silence on the other side of the gym-it was a moment that would make any parent proud.

As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned(领悟) on me that I had taught him determination in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court.

1What happened to the author 14 years earlier?

A.To criticize the unfriendly gym.

B.To encourage himself to be confident.

C.To amuse the readers with a funny sport event.

D.To acknowledge Nathan's focus and determination.

4What can we learn from this story?
