二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Smith, Williams, Brown are common surnames that you will meet in Britain. However, you may come across some strange English surnames. The following surnames are rare, but they are real.

GotobedYou are not going to meet many people with the surname “Go-to-bed”. The first recorded person to have this surname was John Gotobedde of Cambridge in 1269. Professor Reaney, an authority on English surnames, explains the surname originated from people who had a bed, which was rare back in the 12th century. People were proud that they could afford to have a bed, thus adding it to their name. Strange but true!

Onions

This surname, which was first popular in France and Ireland before coming over to the UK, dates back to l279 and identified(显示)a person’s job. He was either a seller or a grower of the vegetable.

Nutter

Nutter means a crazy or silly person in spoken English. You wouldn’t usually call yourself a nutter, but it’s genuinely a surname that originates from Yorkshire and Lancashire. It’s a variation of the old English surnames “Notere”, which means a clerk, and “Nothard”, which means a person that keeps oxen.

Hardmeat

You might have guessed that “Hardmeat” must have something to do with a family of butchers. In fact, it might just have been a misspelling of the village that the name came from, which was “Hardmead” in England. Wish they had a spellchecker back then!

【1】Which of the following surnames can tell a family’s wealth?

A.Nutter.

B.Onions.

C.Gotobed.

D.Hardmeat.

【2】What do Onions and Nutter have in common?

A.They originated in the UK.

D.They show the occupations.

22、There is a well-known saying that was originally popularized by a 1980s cartoon series called G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero. That saying is “Knowing is half the battle.” At the end of every G. I. Joe episode, there would be a public service announcement, which gave safety tips and other important life lessons to kids. After that, a child would say “Now I know! ” And an adult would end with, “And knowing is half the battle.”

If knowing is half the battle, then the other half must be doing. “Recent work in cognitive (认知的) science has demonstrated that knowing is a shockingly tiny part of the battle for most real-world decisions,” cognitive psychologists Laurie Santos and Tamar Gendler wrote to Edge. org. In other words, knowing something is likely not enough to overcome our brain’s “built-in” reactions. It just simply isn’t enough to result in behavioral change. Even if knowing isn’t exactly half the battle, it is still important to “know”. If you know about something, then it makes you more aware of it. This, in turn, is the first step to making a change.

If you find yourself struggling to make some sort of change in your life, there are some steps you can take to help you turn your “knowing” into “doing”. First, whether you want to improve your study habits, eat more healthily, or get more sleep, you should write your goals down. When you write down your goals, you document them on paper, which makes them clearer and easier to follow. Next, break down your goals so that they are easier to manage. Making bite-sized steps to achieve your goals will help motivate you to keep moving forward and complete more of these mini goals. Finally, find someone you can share your progress with. Having a friend, family member, or even an online app can help to keep you in check to make sure you get all of the support you need.

It seems that “knowing is half the battle” is no more. So, put your energy into doing. There is no better time than the present, of course!

【1】What makes “Knowing is half the battle” popular?

A.Important life lessons.

B.G. I. Joe: A real American hero.

C.A public service announcement.

D.Recent work in cognitive science.

【2】What can we know from the saying “Knowing is half the battle.”?

A.Knowing something is worthless.

B.Knowing is just the first step to making a change.

C.Knowing is the battle for most real-world decisions.

D.Knowing contributes to overcoming our brain’s reaction.

【3】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Some measures taken to follow your goals.

B.Some measures taken to share your progress.

C.Some measures taken to make knowing a reality.

D.Some measures taken to motivate you to move forward.

【4】What can we conclude from this passage?

A.Put knowing into action.

B.Well begun half done.

C.Words agree with action.

D.Action speaks louder than words.

23、   Many college students complain about dormitory (宿舍) life: a sweltering room without air-conditioning in summer and a dormitory gate which is closed at 11 pm. But they may miss their dormitories after graduation, when they have to spend as much as a third of their income renting a shabby room.

The rising prices of daily necessities, including food, water, gas and electricity, are also making graduates save every penny to make ends meet. Faced with the high cost of living, college graduates need to make every penny work when they budget(预算) their income.

When it comes to renting, try to spend no more than one third of your income on itBetter still, only spend a quarter, according to Hao Qian, a career consultant. Hao also reminds graduates to set aside about one fifth of their income for social activities. “People have spent more on their social lives because of changes in forms of entertainment,” said Hao, “For example, new friends may want to meet you at a quiet club instead of at a noisy house.”

In spite of the high cost of living, many college graduates still, try to stay in big cities. They usually work in industries such as finance, public relations and IT, which depend on a booming(繁荣的) city economy and technology

Hao advises such graduates to reduce their expenditure on shopping as much as possible. “If you are not in jobs such as PR and sales which require you to dress well, you don't need to spend much on clothes and accessories(服装配饰), said Hao, “Spend less than one eighth of your monthly income on shopping.”

24、   Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is moving digital.

To reflect this trend, many mobile budgeting apps for children have sprung up worldwideGoHenry, Osper, and Gimi, to name but a few. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children's accounts, set limits and monitor transactions(交易). Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.

These apps aim to teach young childrenfinancial concepts, such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For instance, the Swedish app Gimi—with 1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing household tasks. The account is attached to a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe in 2020.

Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. "You don't become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It's more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents' money when you're 6 to 12 years old," he says.

But Catherine Winter, managing director of financial capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns that while digital tools can help there needs to be a more structured approach to financial education. The area should "have regular, dedicated, classroom time and ideally should be taught as a standalone subject," she said. “Children would then have the right context and foundation to get the most out of both the apps and their money.”

1What does the underlined part "this trend" in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Putting coins in piggy banks

B.Pocket money moving digital

C.Mobile budging apps springing up.
