二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   J.K. Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day. Her Harry Potter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement.

She is a celebrity (名人) who is very active on twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9-year-old daughter Bailey.

He included a link to his article titled being a broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV, which means there’s no “digital babysitter”, and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing they have done these days is reading books together.

Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,” Burke explains. “This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”

After hearing Burke’s story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more signed books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.

22、   I was in my third year of teaching creative writing at Ralph McKee Vocational School when one of my students, 16-year-old Mikey, gave me a note from his mother. It explained his absence from class the day before.

I had seen Mikey writing the note at his desk, using his left hand to change his handwriting. I said nothing. Students had been forging (伪造) excuse notes since they learned to write, and if I were to confront each forger I’d be busy 24 hours a day.

I threw Mikey’s note into a desk drawer along with dozens of other notes. While my students took a test, I decided to read all the notes I’d only glanced at before. The writing ranged from imaginative to senseless.

I was having an idea.

Students complained and said it was hard putting 200 words together on any subject but when they forged excuse notes, they were brilliant. The notes I had could be turned into a collection of Great American Excuses. I read:

“The stove caught fire and the wallpaper went up and the fire department kept us out of the house all night.”

“His sister’s dog ate his homework and I hope it chokes him.”

The writers of these notes didn’t realize that honest excuse notes were usually dull: “Peter was late because the alarm clock didn’t go off.”

One day I distributed the excuse notes to my classes.

“Mr. McCourt, who wrote these?” asked one boy.

“You did,” I said. “I omitted names to protect the guilty. They’re supposed to be written by parents, but you and I know the real authors. Yes, Mikey?”

“So what are we supposed to do?”

“This is the first class to study the art of the excuse note and practice writing them. You’re so lucky to have a teacher like me who has taken your best writing and turned it into a subject worthy of study.”

Everyone smiled as I went on, “You didn’t settle for the old alarm clock story. You used your imaginations. So try it now. Imagine you have a 15-year-old who needs an excuse for falling behind in English.”

The students produced excuses, ranging from a 16-wheeler crashing into a house to a severe case of food poisoning blamed on the school cafeteria. They said, “More, more. Can we do more?”

So I said, “I’d like you to write—” And I finished, “‘An Excuse Note from Adam to God’ or ‘An Excuse Note from Eve to God.’” Heads went down. Pens raced across paper.

Before long the bell rang. For the first time ever I saw students so immersed in their writing they had to be urged to go to lunch by their friends.

1What was the author’s attitude towards students’ forging the excuse notes at the beginning of the story?

A.Favorable B.Unconcerned C.Negative D.Critical

2By saying “I was having an idea” (Para. 4), the author probably means that ______.

A.he decided to read all the excuse notes to the students

B.he realized that Mikey was good at writing excuse notes

C.he understood why so many students forged excuse notes

D.he found that the excuse notes could be used in writing class

3The author asked the student to practice writing excuses with the aim of ______.

A.punishing them for writing lunatic excuse notes

B.asking them to reflect on the story about Adam

C.exercising their imagination in creative writing

D.telling them to write an excuse note skillfully

23、In 2016, Luncz and her colleagues realized that Brazilian capuchins (卷尾猴) produced stone flakes (小薄片) from the rocks they used to pound (击打) food and dig without necessarily meaning to. It made the team wonder whether the artefacts (人工制品) really reflected any technical planning by those early humans.

Since then, Luncz and her colleagues have been studying tool use in long-tailed macaques (猕猴) on the islands of Phang Nga Bay in Thailand (泰国的攀牙湾). The team set up motion-activated cameras (动作感应摄像头) to study the behaviour of the wild macaques. During 100 hours of footage (镜头),the team witnessed monkeys accidentally creating flakes as they struck nuts between two stones and then leaving the broken stones to find new, whole stones.

This is almost exactly what the capuchins did in the earlier study. The team then compared 1119 stone flakes from the macaques’ nut-cracking sites with artefacts found at hominin (古人类) sites in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. The monkeys’ thin, flat, wide stone flakes—ranging from 1.3 to 7.9 centimetres in length—were “almost the same” with flakes that were associated with ancient humans up to 3.3 million years ago, says Tomos Proffitt, another member of the research team at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.

The findings could challenge the current understanding of early stone technology, says Proffitt. “I wouldn’t go so far as to say that all of the old material is not intentional,” he says. “But what our study shows is that we can’t be 100 per cent certain that every single flake in the early Stone Age archaeological record was intentionally made. There may be a component within that record that’s unintentional.”

A.Brazilian capuchins used the stone flakes to cook food.

B.Brazilian capuchins could make artefacts like humans.

C.Brazilian capuchins didn’t produce stone flakes from the rocks on purpose.

D.Brazilian capuchins were more capable of producing stone flakes than early humans.

A.They kept the broken stones for future use.

B.They created flakes when they searched for food.

C.They were desperate to find new, whole stones to make stone tools.

D.They accidentally created flakes as they struck nuts between two stones.

【3】What did the team find out after they made the comparison in Paragraph 3?

A.The monkeys’ flakes were associated with ancient humans.

B.The flakes used by hominins were actually made by monkeys.

C.The monkeys’ stone flakes ranged from 1.3 to 7.9 centimetres in width.

D.The monkeys’ stone flakes were quite similar to those from early humans.

【4】What do you know from the last paragraph?

A.All of the old stone material was unintentional.

B.We could be sure to say all the flakes were made out of purpose.

C.The findings confirmed the current understanding of early stone technology.
