二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In a unique research cooperation between Stratasys, Education, R&D departments and MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab, a new process is being developed, known as 4D Printing.

The 4D printing concept, which allows materials to “self-assemble (自行组装)” into 3D structures, was initially proposed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty member Skylar Tibbits. Tibbits and his team combined a strand () of plastic with a layer made out of “smart” material that could self-assemble in water. They advanced this concept by creating materials that can change into several different complicated shapes, though this kind of material remains the bottleneck of 4D technology.

To many people that are just starting to get used to the idea of 3D printers, the name 4D is causing confusion because they cannot understand where this fourth “dimension” coming from. 4D technology shares many of the same principles of 3D printing and is essentially still about creating a new, 3D structure out of certain component; however, Tibbits states the fourth dimension at work here comes from concept of the fourth dimension of time. The difference between these 3D and 4D creations is that these new forms have the ability to transform and adapt over time.

4D printing works through self-assembly — a system where “disordered elements form an “ordered” structure via an interaction. With these 4D printed materials, these disordered materials are strands or sheets of specially designed materials. Environmental changes then stimulate (刺激)a response from them so that they form a preprogrammed shape.

The idea of having adaptable technology that only relies on energy and non-human interactions raises some interesting questions about where 4D printing can be used and the practical applications in dangerous environments. This could mean improved infrastructures in extreme conditions, leading to a reduced need for workers to put themselves at risk, but the potential goes even further than that. The technology promises exciting new possibilities for a variety of applications. A solar panel or similar product could be produced in a flat shape onto which functional devices can be easily installed. It could then be changed to a compact shape for packing and shipping. After arriving at its destination, the product could be stimulated to form a different shape that serves its function. Also it could be used to build furniture, bikes, cars and even buildings. As with many of the ideas being put forward, it is easy to go a step too far into the extreme, but this just shows the potential of 4D in comparison to 3D.

The next stage for the research is to move from printing single strands to sheets and eventually whole structures. And water need not be the process ’ s only energy source.

【1】Which of the following displays the fourth dimension of 4D printing?

A. 4D printing creates a new, 3D structure out of certain component.

B. 4D technology reduces need for workers to put themselves at risk.

C. 4D technology can be used in many more fields than 3D printing.

22、   Frederic Mishkin, who’s been a professor at Columbia Business School for almost 30 years, is good at solving problems and expressing ideas. Whether he’s standing in front of a lecture hall or engaged in a casual conversation, his hands are always waving and pointing. When he was in graduate school, one of his professors was so annoyed by this constant gesturing that he made the young economist sit on his hands whenever he visited the professor’s office.

It turns out, however, that Mishkin’s professor had it exactly wrong. Gesture doesn’t prevent but promotes clear thought and speech. Research demonstrates that the movements we make with our hands when we talk form a kind of second language, adding information that’s absent from our words. It’s learning’s secret code: Gesture reveals what we know. It reveals what we don’t know. What’s more, the agreement (or lack of agreement) between what our voices say and how our hands move offers a clue to our readiness to learn.

Many of the studies establishing the importance of gesture to learning have been conducted by Susan Goldin-Meadow, a professor of psychology at the University of Chicago. “We change our minds by moving our hands,” writes Goldin-Meadow in a review of this work. Particularly significant are what she calls “mismatches” between oral expression and physical gestures. A student might say that a heavier ball falls faster than a light one, for example, but make a gesture indicating that they fall at the same rate, which is correct. Such differences indicate that we’re moving from one level of understanding to another. The thoughts expressed by hand motions are often our newest and most advanced ideas about the problem we’re working on; we can’t yet absorb these concepts into language, but we can capture them in movement.

Goldin-Meadow’s more recent work strews not only that gesture shows our readiness to learn, but that it actually helps to bring learning about. It does so in two ways. First, it elicits (引出) helpful behavior from others around us. Goldin-Meadow has found that adults respond to children’s speech-gesture mismatches by adjusting their way of instruction. Parents and teachers apparently receive the signal that children are ready to learn, and they act on it by offering a greater variety of problem-solving techniques. The act of gesturing itself also seems to quicken learning, bringing new knowledge into consciousness and aiding the understanding of new concepts. A 2007 study by Susan Wagner Cook, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Iowa, reported that third-graders who were asked to gesture while learning algebra (代数) were nearly three times more likely to remember what they’d learned than classmates who did not gesture.

1According to Paragraph 1, Frederic Mishkin was asked to sit on his hands because ________.

A.he could litter express his ideas that way

B.he always pointed his finger at his professor

C.his professor did not like his gesturing

D.his gestures prevented his professor from thinking

2How is gesturing important in acquiring knowledge?

A.It draws tasteful responses from others and increases learning speed.

B.It promotes second language learning and quickens thinking.

C.It provides significant clues for solving academic problems.

D.It reduces students’ reliance on teachers’ instruction.

3What can be inferred from the passage about gesture-speech mismatches?

A.They can stimulate our creativity.

B.Instructors should make full use of them.

C.Teachers can hardly explain new concepts without them.

D.They serve as a stepping stone to solving real life problems.

4What could be the best title of the passage?

A.Hand Motions, a Second Language

B.Gesturing: Signal of Understanding

C.New Uses of Gesturing

D.The Secret Code of Learning

23、Do you often dream at night? How do you feel when you dream? Is it useful to our health?  “Dreams may be more important than sleep, and we all need to dream,” some scientists say.

Dreams take up about one quarter of our sleeping time. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short films. They are usually in colour. Some dreams are like old films. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming may be a way of trying to find an answer. Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They may have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.

Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can’t remember the dream. Dreams can disappear quickly from memory.

Too much dreaming can be harmful. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is at work when we dream. That is why we may have a long sleep and still wake up tired.

1The first paragraph tells us that dream is very ______.

A. interesting   B. important

C. useful   D. harmful

2When a dream comes to somebody again and again, it shows ______.

A. he often does the work about the dream

B. somebody misses him very much

C. the dream is very important to him

D. he is worrying about something

3According to the passage, we know dreaming can ______ sometimes.

A. hurt us badly

B. let us think over and over

C. help us find new ideas

D. wake us up early

4The passage mainly tells us ______.

A. what a dream is

B. dreams are like films

C. too much dreaming is harmful

D. we can remember our dreams

24、Chances are you can name a few animals that are facing extinction. But what about plants? With some 40% of plant species under threat of extinction—and given humankind’s reliance on the plant world-one might think there’d be more urgency around protecting them. Yet in the United States, for example, plants receive less than 4% of federal funding for endangered species, despite comprising 57% of the endangered species list.

Much of mankind suffers from “plant blindness”. Defined by botanists Elisabeth Schussler and James Wandersee, plant blindness is the inability to see or notice the plants in one’s own environment, which leads to the inability to recognize the importance of plants in the biosphere (生物圈) and in human affairs.

Now a paper published by Oxford University Press might have found a cure for that. Having noticed that nature shows increased viewers’ interest in the animals on the shows, the researchers set out to discover if nature documentaries could do the same for plants. For the paper, they focused on The Green Planet, the 2022 BBC plant-focused documentary narrated (解说) by Sir David Attenborough.

To figure out if the documentary engaged viewers enough to want to learn more, the researchers looked at people’s online behavior around the time of the broadcast. They noted which species appeared on the show and then looked at data on Google Trends and Wikipedia page hits for those same species before and after the episodes (集) of the documentary aired. The researchers found some 28. 1% of search terms representing plants mentioned in the BBC documentary had peak popularity in the UK, measured using Google Trends, the week after the broadcast of the relevant episode. Wikipedia data showed this as well. Almost a third (31%) of the Wikipedia pages related to plants mentioned in The Green Planet showed increased visits the week after the broadcast. The investigators also note that people were more likely to do online searches for plants that enjoyed more screen time on The Green Planet.

【1】What problem does the author talk about in the first paragraph?

A.Mass animal extinction.

B.Humans’ heavy reliance on plants.

C.Sharp increase in endangered species.

D.Insufficient plant conservation efforts.

【2】How did the researchers evaluate the influence of The Green Planet?

A.By interviewing the viewers online.

B.By analyzing data on TV viewing habits.

C.By studying online searches of certain species.

D.By noting the number of nature documentaries aired.

【3】What might be the conclusion of the research paper?

A.Screen time determines website visits.

B.Nature documentaries increase plant awareness.

C.Watching more TV will help protect biodiversity.

D.Well-made documentaries enjoy peak popularity.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.A Wild Reason to Watch More TV

B.Best-ever Documentary: The Green Planet

C.A Great Chance to Stop Wildlife Extinction

D.Most Common Phenomenon: Plant Blindness
