21、   Stuart Bee prayed that rescue would come before his ship slipped completely under water. The 62-year-old sailor had been washed out of his boat by a wave while he was sleeping at about midnight on Saturday, leaving him fighting for survival in the Atlantic, 86 miles off Florida.

Mr. Bee set out at 4 pm on Friday and was reported missing on Saturday by friends. On Sunday morning, 11 hours later, he was found by a container ship. “What day is it?” he asked Lacruiser Relativo, the container ship’s second officer who threw him a lifebuoy and helped him aboard.

“My ship suffered engine failure. There were long and sharp noises and I was asleep when the water gushed in the back and forced me up the front,” Mr. Bee told the US coast guard after his rescue. He said he swam in jeans and heavy work boots through the boat’s forward hatch (船口) and surfaced, with no life jacket or any flotation. Mr. Relativo said later, “He stuck to the only part of his boat that was not sunk. He told me that he thought maybe that it was to be his last night and that if it was, had he lived his life well enough? He said he realized he had a beautiful life, out there watching the moon on the open water. It was dark but he found an inner peace as he looked at the sky.”

Leisa Bee, his niece, said, “Another half hour and his boat would have completely sunk and no one would have found it or him. I keep looking at the pictures of his rescue and I can’t stop crying. My uncle lived on that boat, so his home is gone now and all his possessions, though he did manage to keep his wallet. When he called my family, he said, ‘Hey, you’ll never guess what happened to me!’ I had no clue of the thousands of people who’d been praying for me.”

22、   When you were at school, the last thing you probably wanted to do was to spend your weekends going to work. There was homework to do, sport to play and fun to have. But our parents probably persuaded us to find a job to earn some money and get some life experience. When I was a teenager I had a paper round: delivering newspapers to people’s homes.

Today in the UK you are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many children do take up part-time jobs. It’s one of those things that are seen almost as a rite of passage (成人仪式). It’s a taste of independence and sometimes a useful thing to put on your CV(简历). Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing their own money.

Some research has shown that not taking up a Saturday or holiday job could be deleterious to a person later on. A 2015 study by the UK Commission on Employment and Skills found that not participating in part-time work at school age had been blamed by employers’ organizations for young adults being ill-prepared for full-time employment, but despite this, recent statistics have shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years.

So does this mean that British teenagers are now afraid of hard work? Probably not. Some experts feel that young people feel going out to work will affect their performance at school and they are under some pressure now to study hard and get good exam result and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that “Properly regulated part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.” In reality, it’s all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.

Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13-year-old girl called Rachel, who has a Saturday job in a shop, told the BBC that “I enjoy my job because I’m earning money and it helps me socialize with people I work with.” That seems like something worth getting up for a Saturday morning. Did you do a part-time job when you were at school?

1What conclusion can we draw from Para2?

A.Children over 13 in the UK must take up part-time jobs.

B.Taking up part-time jobs is good for students in many ways.

C.Students taking up part-time jobs are more independent.

D.Taking up part-time jobs can help students save money.

2What’s the meaning of the underlined word “deleterious”?

A.Threatening. B.Important.

C.Beneficial. D.Harmful.

3Why don’t some British schoolchildren take up part-time jobs according to some experts?

A.Because they are not ready to go out to work.

B.Because they cannot endure hardships.

C.Because they want to study hard and get good academic performance.

D.Because they lack confidence and skills needed to work.

4Which of the following will Geoff Barton agree with?

A.Students should put all their energies into their studies.

B.It is good for students to do part-time jobs as long as they are proper.

C.Students with good grades and no study pressure can do part-time jobs.

D.The more part-time jobs they do, the more beneficial it is for students.

5What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Should schoolchildren have part-time jobs?

B.What kind of part-time job should schoolchildren do?

C.What benefits can part-time jobs bring to schoolchildren?

D.Why do British schoolchildren show less interest in part-time jobs?

23、   The Taj Mahal, in Agra, India, is one of the most brilliant structures on Earth. It is nearly 400 years old. Emperor Shah Jahan had it built in memory of his wife. It took about 20 years to build the monument. Some 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants helped get the job done. Today, the Taj Mahal is not just a symbol of cultural history. It’s also India’s most famous tourist attraction. About 8 million people visit it each year.

But pollution is turning the white marble monument shades of green, yellow, and brown. The Taj Mahal stands on the polluted Yamuna River. Insects are attracted to the dirty water. They leave greenish droppings on the building. Air pollution is also a big threat. Factories and cars release pollution into the air. It sticks to the Taj Mahal’s suidEace. In the 1990s, India’s Supreme Court ordered hundreds of factories near the monument to close. Also, car and bus traffic was restricted. From time to time, workers clean the Taj Mahal. But doing so is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming; And it doesn’t prevent the discoloration.

On July 11, India’s Supreme Court gave the city of Agra a warning: “Either you destroy the Taj Mahal or you restore it”. Authorities in the city submitted a draft of an action plan on July 24. It suggests banning plastics and construction from the area. It also calls for the closing of more factories.

“In order to preserve the Taj Mahal, people must come together to work toward a solution. There needs to be positive pressure on people to act. We need to act immediately,” Sachchida Tripathi says. 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Social media and teens’ anxiety

From cyber-bullying to cruel comments, social media can be a land mine for kids. Issues parents never worried about are now a risk for many teens. With kids’ digital well-being a concern, researchers are exploring potential links between social media and the rise in teen suicide rates, tech addiction, and loss of real-life social skills. Many parents are wondering: Is social media causing my kid to have anxiety?

It’s a question that worried parents. Some research has observed a relationship between social media use and anxiety in kids, but it’s difficult to know if and when social media causes anxiety or whether kids who are anxious turn to social media as a way to seek support. How kids use social media matters, too. Social comparison and feedback-seeking behaviors have been associated with depressive symptoms, which often co-occur with anxiety.

How can parents keep social media a positive for kids?

1. Seeing photos of a trip to the beach your friends didn’t invite you to can really be upsetting. If your kid is tired of digital drama, suggest they take a break from social media for a while. In fact, if they post a status update that they’re taking a break, their friends might be very accepting because they’ve had similar feelings.

2. People post stuff that makes their lives look perfect — not the homework struggles, or the fight they had with their dad. Remind kids that social media leaves the messy stuff out — and that everyone has ups and downs.

3. In a world where kids could spend their days lying around looking at Wechat, it’s doubly important for them to feel as though they’re cultivating their inner lives. Prompt them to balance social media with soul-nourishing activities such as hobbies, exercise, reading, and helping others. Otherwise, what are they going to show off about on social media?
