21、Here are some sports in the Winter Olympics:

Sledging

Sledging has been an Olympic sport since 1924. It came from the Swiss town of St. Moritz in the late 1800s and looks great fun! If you want to do this sport, you should be able to run on the ice! Top athletes can sometimes reach speeds about 130 kilometers an hour. Germany picked up the gold for both the two and four men bobsleigh at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Curling

Curling has also been an Olympic sport since 1924 and its birthplace is Scotland. Curling is a competition between two teams with four players on each side. The game is played on the ice, and the two teams take turns pushing a 19.1kg stone towards a series of concentric circles. The object is to get the stone as close to the centre of the circles as possible. You need to be light on your feet and have good balance to walk on the ice.

Hockey

Hockey is an Olympic sport since 1920. It is fun, fast but also a little dangerous. Women were not allowed to play in the Olympics until 1998. Teams consist of 12 people, but each team can’t have more than six players on the ice at one time. The game lasts for three 20-minute periods, with a 15-minute break after the first and second periods. 22、Eleven-year-old Allan Baltz of Jonesboro, Arkansas, is familiar with the foster (领养) care system. When he and his twin sister Alice were only four, they came to live with their foster parents Derek and Lesli Baltz.

Last fall when Allan got an opportunity to pay it forward, he made it count.

During the height of the 2021 shutdown, to keep their kids entertained at home, the family decided to switch up their hairstyles. Lesli dyed her hair red and Alice went blue. Derek tried out a mustache, and Allan went the craziest by growing out a long, beautiful mullet (胭脂鱼发型).

When friends pushed Allan to enter the USA Mullet Championships competition, Allan initially wasn’t interested because he thought he couldn’t win. However, once he learned there was a cash prize, he changed his tune.

“He instantly was like ‘Oh, OK. I can do it, and we’ll give the money to kids in foster care.” Lesli said. “He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t say, ‘I can get a bike, then give some money away.’ It was just instant that he wanted to give it away.”

After submitting his photo and following up with several weeks of campaigning, Allan took home the top prize in the kid’s division with more than 25, 000 votes in his favor.

He split his winnings between two local foster care organizations, Together We Foster and Project Zero, but his impact went far beyond just the $2,500 he donated. His giving heart inspired others to do the same, and he ended up raising an additional $4,500 for the two organizations.

“People also started volunteering … and donating,” Lesli said. “A few people that we know decided to start fostering because of Allan’s story. The way that people hear it and it inspires them to do something about the foster care crisis is really incredible.” Lesli said she couldn’t be prouder of Allan’s heart for helping others and feels truly lucky to be his mom.

23、A woman was walking her dog along a beach in New Zealand in late June when she saw something that looked like a white ball in the sand. It turned out to be a young Emperor Penguin that was lost. At his age, he should have been close to the Antarctic, swimming for fish and playing on the ice floes (冰川). But this penguin started swimming north and just kept going.

The penguin attracted a lot of attention in New Zealand. It has been 40 years since an Emperor Penguin was last seen there. Researchers at the Department of Conservation were called in. They decided to watch the penguin closely, but not to disturb it in any way. Many New Zealanders came to Peka Peka Beach to look at the elegant penguin. They were careful to keep their dogs away from him so he wouldn’t be frightened.

The public nicknamed the animal Happy Feet. Researchers started to notice that Happy Feet didn’t seem well. It turned out that he had been eating the sand from the beach, likely thinking it was snow.

The public raised more than 11, 000 pounds for an operation to get the sand out of his stomach. The operation was a success, and Happy Feet was taken to a zoo in Wellington, NZ. A group of experts met to decide how to help Happy Feet return to the wild.

Last Sunday, they put him on a boat called the Tangaroa, in a specially built ice-filled box and took him out into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand. There, they released him into the ocean, which is his natural habitat. He took one last look at his human helpers and then dived into the ocean.

“Emperor Penguins spend their first five years at sea,” said Peter Simpson of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation. “What happens now is up to the penguin.”

Happy Feet was fitted with a satellite transmitter (发射机) so they can monitor his progress using the Internet. So far, the trackers show that he swam northeast for a little while before getting his bearings and heading south.

【1】Where is the young penguin supposed to appear?

A.Near the Antarctic.

B.Inside the hole in the ice.

C.On the sunny beach.

D.In the depths of the ocean.

24、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A fellow speaker from California named Geri flew to Japan, in her favorite jeans and a casual jacket, to give her first speech.Fourteen hours later, four perfectly dressed Japanese gentlemen greeted her at Narita Airport.Smiling and bowing low, they handed her their business cards. With her bag in one hand, Geri took their cards with the other. She thanked them, glanced briefly at the cards, and put them into her jeans pocket quickly.

When the five of them arrived at the hotel, they invited Geri to tea in the lobby (大厅).While sipping tea, the gentlemen presented her with a small gift which she eagerly opened. She was thrilled with the gift and shouted excitedly, “Oh, it's beautiful!”

At this point, the four Japanese gentlemen stood up and, bowing only very slightly, said “Sayonara” and left immediately.Poor Geri was left astonished. What did she do wrong?

Everything! Her jeans were the first gaffe.Even if you're coming off a bicycle in Japan, you do not meet clients (客人) casually dressed. The second mistake was Geri's handling of their business cards rudely. In Japan, the business card is one of the most important communicative tools. It is always presented and accepted respectfully with both hands. However, Geri put their cards away much too quickly. In Japan, people use business cards as a conversation starter. You chat about each other's cards and work and do not put theirs away until they gently and respectfully place yours in safekeeping.Putting it carelessly into her jeans pocket was the ultimate disrespect.

Then, the fourth horror of horrors was that Geri should not have opened the gift in front of her clients. In a land where saving face is critical, it would be embarrassing to discover the gift they gave was not as nice as the one they received. What is worse, Geri hadn't even given them a gift!

【1】In the four Japanese gentlemen's eyes, Geri took their cards ________.

A.excitedly B.embarrassingly

C.politely D.disrespectfully

【2】Why did the four Japanese gentlemen leave Geri suddenly?

A.Because they couldn't bear Geri's behavior any longer.

B.Because they had finished the task.

C.Because Geri had something more important to do.

D.Because Geri felt embarrassed.

【3】What does the underlined word “gaffe” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.ignorance     B.sadness

C.mistake    D.carelessness

【4】The third mistake Geri made was that she ________.

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

25、A friend of mine recently said something nice to me.

“Those sunglasses just don’t _________ you,” she told me.

What was nice wasn’t the _________into my sunglasses, but my friend’s honesty. She wasn’t being _________. She wasn’t trying to hurt me. She really wanted what was best for me, and so she _________causing offense to tell me what I needed to hear.

It is rare, this kind of honesty. And it’s getting rarer.

We live in an age when social media is changing our _________communications. We post highly considered status updates on Facebook. We “like” the pictures of people we may not like _________, and leave comments on other people’s posts that are _________ and meaningless.

We are _________how to be real with each other.

We chat with a (an) _________ who has lipstick on her teeth and we pretend not to notice. We see our friend wearing an awful outfit and reassure her it’s fine. We ignore phone calls, or pretend to be busy, __________telling someone we don’t want to see them. And when we get our feelings hurt, we __________it down, because it’s far less difficult than facing the person who hurts us.

And we also refrain (避免) from being honest about ourselves when we are with friends. Sure, we might write about our emotional problems later, once the __________ is over.

We don’t talk about these problems __________ we’re deep in them, because they’re scary and make us weak. We keep the facade (假象) up and the smiles wide and the Instagram photos nice. And then when things __________-when we end up in hospital, or unemployed-our friends are shocked, because they didn’t see it coming.

We didn’t let them see it coming.

Honesty is difficult, but without it, we can’t connect with each other.

Start small. Let someone know if they have lipstick on their teeth. Tell your friend that no, the outfit isn’t the best, maybe consider something else. Tell your friend __________ that you won’t be at her party, but you wish her all the best. Let your loved ones know when they’ve hurt you, and be prepared to hear the same from them. Be a little more real on social media, for your sake as much as for everyone else’s.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

Offshore production

The world’s consumption of fashion is huge. The European Union imported textiles (clothing and carpets) to the value of €83.7 billion in 2010. Prices have fallen, too, with hand-finished shirts costing less than five euros. To make clothes at these low prices, companies have to keep costs down. They use offshore production to do this. Large companies make their products in developing countries where workers are paid much less than in developed countries.

A point that should be considered in that case is that developing countries encourage developed countries to invest in them to provide jobs. Supporters of overseas production point out that increased investment has positive effects in the long term. Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman points out that the growth in manufacturing has an impact on the rest of the economy, because it reduces the number of people needing to work in agriculture and increases competition for labour. This leads to higher wages, which lead to other improvements, such as the ability to send children to school. On the other hand, the disadvantage of this foreign investment is the fact that it can have a negative impact on the economy of developed countries, because people lose their jobs when production is outsourced to other countries.

It seems that if multinationals are going to benefit from low production costs by using overseas suppliers, they should do more to improve the social situation—for example, by building schools for the children in those communities. It is also clear that multinationals should invest in communities in the developed countries where they sell their products. In conclusion, there are clear benefits for the multinationals in terms of lower costs of production in developing countries and their workers, but they should still do more to protect the workers in overseas manufacturing plants.
