21、Baron Pierre de Coubertin was a Frenchman. At his time sports were not taught in French schools. De Coubertin believed that sports should go hand in hand with studies. He had an idea. His idea was to begin the Olympics all over again.

Sports teachers of other countries liked de Coubertion’s ideas. So in 1896, the modern Olympic Games were held in Athens(雅典), Greece. Since then the Olympics have been held once every four years, except three times, when there were wars.

Before the start of the Olympic Games, runners carry lighted torch(火炬)through many nations towards the stadium(运动场)where the games will be held. These sportsmen are from different countries. Yet they work together to carry the Olympic torch. It is passed from runner to runner. When the last runner enters the stadium, he or she places the torch in a special(专门的)basin filled with oil. 23、   You probably have a resume (个人简历) that you adjust from time to time, adding skills here or new titles there. It’s important to keep your resume updated to reflect your growing set of abilities and accomplishments. But it might come as a surprise to hear that The New York Times recommends writing a second resume. You list your failures, mistakes, and struggles along the way. By keeping track of your failures and reflecting on them in a way that’s constructive, you can learn from your mistakes and achieve more in the future.

Here’s how it works: In the format of your choice, make a list of your failures, whether it’s schools that rejected you, projects that failed, or goals you didn’t quite achieve. The key is not to dwell on these mistakes for hours, according to Melanie Stefan, a lecturer at Edinburgh Medical School who inspired several academics to create their own failure resumes a few years ago.

“If you dare and can afford to make it public, it will be six times as long as your normal resume. It will probably be totally discouraging at first sight,” Stefan wrote in an article that originally appeared in the journal Nature.

“But it will remind you of the missing truths, some of the essential parts of what it means to be a scientist and it might inspire a colleague to shake off a rejection and start again.”

Scientists aren’t the only ones who can benefit from reflecting on their mistakes. J.K. Rowling, for instance, is one of the many wildly successful people who has spoken publicly about her failures. And researchers at Columbia University announced last year that they planned to interview Nobel winners about their own failures in an attempt to better understand how personal and professional losses can promote learning.

1What can be found in the failure resume?

A.Skills and new titles. B.Abilities and achievements.

C.Goals and academic results. D.Failures, mistakes and struggles.

2What does the underlined phrase “dwell on” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Thoroughly forget. B.Always think about.

C.Completely avoid. D.Repeatedly correct.

3Why did researchers at Columbia University plan to interview Nobel winners?

A.To make the “failure resume” public. B.To remind people of the missing truths.

C.To show how failures can improve learning. D.To inspire more people to start all over again.

4What is Stefan’s attitude to the “failure resume”?

A.Doubtful. B.Approving.

C.Negative. D.Tolerant.

24、   Myles Kerr knew that being a Marine (水兵)  comes with a lot of responsibility, but despite the huge weight he has on his shoulders, he has not forgotten  the essence of being a public servant — that of being human.

Seven years ago, a photo  of a Marine and a young boy running a marathon  immediately went viral after it was shared on social media. But what seemed like a simple image packed  a much deeper backstory. This story happened in 2013, but its relevance is still as powerful as ever.

The  pair  were  running  The  Jeff  Drench  Memorial  5K in Charlevoix,  Michigan  when Myles Kerr  came across Brandon  Fuchs, a 9-year old boy struggling to keep up with the rest of  his  group.  Brandon,  exhausted and  out  of  breath,  asked the  Marine: “Will  you  run with me?”

People  who had their  eyes on the  prize  would  have refused,  but the 19 -year -old  was different.  Being  a  Marine,  he knew  exactly  what  he  should  do. Kerr  put aside  his  goal  of beating his mates and instead slowed down to accompany the struggling boy to the finish line.

Because he chose to help the boy, the Marine ended up with the slowest time in his age group, according to the 5K results online.

Though  he might  have  lost  the race, the Marine  won over people’s  hearts. His  act of kindness was celebrated on social media.

Kerr  didn’t  expect  that  his  simple  gesture   would  attract   so  much attention.  He responded  to a tweet  praising  his  actions  saying, “I  was  just  doing  what  any man would  do, but thank you! ”   He also tweeted that he received gifts from the Fuchs family for helping out Brandon.

To Kerr, being a Marine was more than just being trained for combat —  it also required learning how to be kind and compassionate towards the citizens they serve.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Forty-year-old Rao had absolutely no intention of going fishing on that Monday, June 16th.He was still recovering from an injury, but his friends had managed to convince him otherwise.

The monsoon had already arrived, but it looked like a good day for fishing. Rao checked his phone for weather updates, before climbing into the boat. There were six others, all fishermen. The men lifted the anchor and set out. They brought a little water and food and blocks of ice to preserve the fish they would catch. If the catch was good, they would turn back early the next morning and head to the market.

At first, it was sunny. But as morning turned to afternoon, the sky changed color, and the sun hid behind the clouds. Soon, it became dark, and then it started raining. Perhaps it was best to wait for the weather to settle before returning. But it only got worse-the waves grew higher, finally damaging one of the engines. The fishermen did not panic still, quickly repairing what was possible to fix. Then, early on Tuesday morning, the radar broke, as did the anchor. Exhausted and frightened, the seven men stayed close to each other as the violent sea tried to destroy their boat. For lack of shelter, they soon lost whatever food and water they had.

Feelings of hopelessness hit Rao, but he refused to give in. As the boat threatened to capsize for the 10th time, he drew on years of fishing experience and tried controlling the boat through the angry waves. Twice, he nearly lost friends to the sea, but somehow, with his heart in his mouth, while motivating them, Rao managed to pull them back in. Finally, the waves calmed down. But the men didn’t know how to get back home. Rao tied an orange towel on a pole, hoping someone could notice them.
