21、When Armida Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, Armato wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.
Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.
Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence.“This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said, “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You are with people who are not as lucky as you are . They live in very poor conditions but they ’re so happy and outgoing .You say, ‘My God. I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”
She said they built a one-room school from scratch with no mechanical comment mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.
Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.
“Armato’s worries are very common among parents,” says Bill Nevin, a teacher at St. George’s High School. He organizes a humanitarian trip to India to the Sheela Bal Bhaven orphanage and says the three biggest fears families have are health, security and contact.

22、How do young children learn to have good values? How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness and patience? At a time when more and more parents worry about the violent images(暴力形象) their children see on TV, some are turning to fairy tales(童话).
It is believed that fairy tales have a great influence on children because they describe the two sides of good and evil(邪恶) very clearly. When children hear the stories, they learn to care about others’ feelings. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones, in our lives.
What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In The Princess and the Pea(《豌豆公主》), a poorly dressed girl, who insists she is a princess, is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that her dream comes true because she stays true to herself. In The Little Mermaid(《小美人鱼》), the mermaid, who lives under the sea, wishes to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In Pinocchio, a wooden puppet(木偶) turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth.
Teaching values is the reason most often given for encouraging children to read stories. These fairy tales can teach children lessons about human relationships that are accepted around the world for many countries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and will not disappear any more soon.

23、 Uber has introduced a motorcycle taxi service in the over-crowded streets of Bangkok.
The move is an effort to respond to what competitor Grab is doing, and Grab already offers a motorcycle option in the Thai capital, called GrabBike.
It isn't Uber's first go at motorcycles. In 2012, the company launched a moto-taxi option in Paris for a few weeks as a short-term experiment. It hasn't tried another motorcycle feature until the Bangkok one, which it has designed for cities in developing countries like Thailand.
Motorbike rides can now be requested like any other Uber taxi on the app in three central Bangkok neighborhoods, and the driver will even show up with a helmet for the passenger.
"Motorcycles are part of the commuting(通勤)culture in Thailand," Douglas Ma said in a Statement, "The new service would create tens of thousands of flexible work opportunities for Thais."
Fares start at 10 baht(28 US cents), and cost an additional 3. 50 baht for each kilometer and 0. 85 baht per minute for every ride—cheaper than the car service.
Bangkok residents reported varying degrees of success at finding available motorcycle taxis in the city after the feature launched Wednesday(February 24, 2016), ranging from a few minutes away to none at all. Uber declined to comment on how many motorcycles are available through the app.
The startup said it has plans to roll out the motorcycle service in other cities in the near future, but it wouldn't clearly state which ones. The taxi -hailing app is in over a dozen Southeast Asian locations, including Bali, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore.

24、It was Tracey who first noticed the man who looked strikingly like her brother-in-law, who also worked as a carpenter. With brown eyes and a strong nose, he could have been the twin of her husband’s brother, Clifford. But Tracey didn’t think much more about the likeness until she discovered her husband and Clare, who shared the same birthday, even had been born at the same hospital. That night, Tracey and Craig sat up in their queen-size bed, talking and drinking black tea until the sun rose. It was a huge mental leap from recognizing a series of likeness to wondering if he was switched at birth.
After a few days, Tracey got her chance to secretly snap a picture of Clare and sent to Craig. Over the next few days, all family members of Craig shook their heads in disbelief about the extreme facial similarity. Clifford, the one who was almost identical, desired to do a DNA test to determine whether it is true or not. However, when the couple approached Clare to tell him about their thought, he was reluctant to admit that he wasn’t the person he’d always been, regarding it as a terrible joke. “Everyone looks like someone.” He thought.
Months later, when Craig got results comparing his DNA with Clifford’s, he called Clare first. But Clare, even while he felt a wave of sadness, wasn’t convinced that the news applied to him.
But the truth floated eventually. Years later, Clare decided to take an identity test. When Clare’s test results arrived in the post, he called Craig. Clare had laid out his results on the kitchen counter next to Clifford’s. “Everything was a match,” Clare said. He and Clifford had been brothers. There was silence on both ends of the phone. For the first time in his life, he didn’t want to go to work. Clare moved from his bed to the sofa, the sofa to the bed, sometimes stopping to sob in the kitchen, often drinking and smoking along days alone, refusing to believe the truth.
