二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、On Lunar New Year’s Eve, when people gather to welcome the Year of Tiger, they make up for the lost time and share good wishes as taste buds feast at a banquet(宴会). At the annual banquet, some foods are symbols of good fortune because of how they look or how their names are pronounced. Hungry and looking for luck? Here are dishes to eat your way to a lucky year.

Dumplings

Dumplings are typical Chinese food. Having pleased Chinese people for over 1, 800 years, dumplings have moved up the list as the star of the Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner for people in northern China. They are said to bring good fortune because of their shape that is similar to aningot(元宝), the money used in ancient China. Dumplings also represent togetherness since making dumplings is an activity requiring family members to roll up their sleeves and cooperate in the process.

Rice cake

Professionals seeking a promotion at work, parents wanting their kids to grow taller or students hoping to get better grades might have their wishes answered if they eat rice cake.

Called “年糕” in Chinese, it sounds similar to “getting higher every year”. Sticky, chewy and yummy, rice cake is characteristic in southern Chinese cuisine and represents progress in life.

Pigs trotters

Pigs’ trotters might not be the most attractive item on the table, but it makes up for nutrition and good luck. Pigs are fortunate animals in Chinese culture, symbolizing strength and wealth. Some pig species are also known to be able to search out the valuable ingredient underground with their sensitive noses. Just imagine that a life of luxury and riches could only be a trotter away!

Green beans

Stir-fried green beans might not be the highlight of the night, but one would be wrong to ignore what they offer. With the base of garlic, ginger and red pepper making it a tasty vegetarian option, a few bits of dried meat put into the pot add a smoky flavour. Green beans are called “四季豆”in Chinese, and they’re thought to bring in good fortune for the year ahead. People also believe they are a symbol of longevity because of their long pods.

【1】Why are these dishes suitable to appear on New Year’s dinner?

22、My husband and I made an agreement to help each other stay off social media platforms as much as possible. We left our accounts up instead of deleting them, but consciously stopped using them. 【1】 Now, I’m glad to report that they have worked.

Tired of being the last to hear of things, we downloaded a few news-specific apps that provide timely information. 【2】 Instead of relying on articles shared by my friends, I now have access to a steady stream of headlines that span far broader than my pre-specified interests.

Staying updated on our social circle has also been a more conscious effort. Previously I was kept up-to-the-minute on engagements, weddings, new jobs and babies through updates and pictures. Without social media, I now learn of these important events only when actually meeting the people involved.

【3】 The effort taken to sit down and write is far challenging, but when I do take the time to keep a journal, my reflections go far deeper.

I still log in occasionally. 【4】 Based on the screen time tracked by my phone, I used to spend an average of over 24 hours a week on various social media platforms. That is down to just 20 minutes every month now, freeing up a great deal of time for sleep, hobbies and offline interactions.

【5】 I might know less about my acquaintances (泛泛之交) now, but have more time to keep directly in touch with my closest friends. Walking home last week, I was greeted by a dramatic purple-pink sunset. I would have immediately reached for my phone a year ago. Now, it was enough to simply watch it darken into the night.

A.I didn’t realize how programmed I had become to constantly use the app.

B.I bought myself a diary again after many years.

C.Overall, I’m glad to have made the change.

D.However, social media now plays a much less important role in my life.

E.This has also widened the range of news I keep up with.

F.We have made a few adjustments in our daily life.

G.I do miss the convenience of using social media to record and reflect.

23、A team of engineers has invented a new type of tiny, self-driven robots that can travel through liquid at incredible speeds and may one day even deliver drugs to hard-to-reach places like bladder (膀胱) inside the human body.

The new study shows this research is a big step forward for tiny robots. The microrobots are really small. Each one measures only 20 micrometers wide, several times smaller than the width of a human hair. They’re also really fast, capable of traveling at speeds of about 3 millimeters per second, or roughly 9, 000 times their own length per minute. The machines look a bit like small rockets and come complete with three tiny wings. The team makes its microrobots out of materials by using a technology similar to 3D printing. Each of the robots carries a small bubble (泡泡) of trapped air. If you expose the machines to sound, the bubbles will begin to shake wildly, pushing water away and shooting the robots forward.

“Imagine if microrobots could perform certain tasks in the body, such as surgeries without cutting into the body,” said Jin Lee, lead author of the study, “we can simply introduce the robots to the body through a pill or an injection, and they would perform the procedure themselves. If that sounds like something copied from science fiction, that’s because it is.” He imagined that, just like in the movie, microrobots could move through a person’s blood stream, seeking out targeted areas. “Once there, the machines slowly released their medicine over the course of about two days. Such a steady flow of medicine could improve the outcome for patients.” Lee added, “But there is a lot of work to do before microrobots can travel through real human bodies.”

For a start, the group wants to make the machines fully biodegradable so that they would eventually disappear in the body, causing no damage at all. “If we can make them work in the bladder,” Lee said, “maybe patients wouldn’t have to come into the clinic as often.”

【1】What is an advantage of the invention?

A.The small size.

B.The rocket-like shape.

C.The big bubble.

D.The 3D-printed material.

【2】What can we infer from Lee’s words about the robots in Paragraph 3?

A.They cure bladder diseases.

B.They help to give patients pills.

C.They are inspired from science fiction.

D.They have performed tasks in human bodies.

【3】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “biodegradable” in Paragraph 4?

A.Efficient.

B.Dissolvable

C.Recyclable

D.Sensitive.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To introduce a healthcare robot.

B.To advertise a medical machine.

C.To arouse interest in developing robots.

D.To raise concern about bladder diseases.

24、Do dogs understand us?

Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.

A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimp.

In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.

In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.

The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination (排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.

Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种) known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.

It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!

1From paragraph 2 we know that __   .

A. animals are as clever as human beings

B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimps

C. chimps have very good word-learning skills

D. dogs have similar 'learning abilities as 3-year-old children

2Both experiments show that .

A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right

B. Rico can recognize different things including toys

C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics

D. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them

3Which of the following statements is true?

A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities.

B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training.

C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.

D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands.
