21、After deciding to move into a new house, Jessica, a full - time mother in London, brought in a woman home organizer - Sharon.
“As a result, Sharon threw away 50 per cent of my clothes, decorations, shoes and books. The process of tidying up my house brought peace to me and made me feel organized at heart.” Jessica told The Times.
Like Jessica, more British have started to seek for help from home organizers to pursue minimalism (极简主义) lifestyles.
This period has made many people appreciate everyday order and comfort. Having a comfortable living environment became more pressing for people who were forced to work at home and for families spending long hours together under one roof.
“People are fearful of the future, especially with this pandemic” Sharon, told The Times. “Will it get worse? Will it return... I think it is a good idea to clear your home as a way of clearing your mind. This is an ideal time to tidy up and give some thought to what we have and to be thankful for it.”
For most people, tidying up is much more than sorting things and putting them away. It can help begin a conversation with themselves and reflect upon their lives.
Jenny, 27, has loved organizing things since childhood. While other children would throw their schoolbags on the floor and run out to play with their friends, Jenny, preferred to put her books and pencil box in order on her desk and enjoyed helping her mother fold shirts. Today she still practices this in her own life while also helping others.
“Decluttering is not merely about getting rid of stuff and sorting things out. It’s a way of improving relationships between people, their belongings and their space, which can help lead to a tidy and comfortable life. It's about education and bringing beauty and harmony into one's living space,” Jenny told The Times.
Did she face any difficulties while organizing homes? Obviously, yes. “There’s a tradition in Britain of treasuring possessions. Most people aren’t in the habit of throwing out useless things unless they’re worn out. So we try to be accustomed to the idea and make it much more acceptable.” Jenny added.

23、In the late 1960s, the anthropologist (人类学家) Edmund Carpenter arrived in New Cuinea armed with mirrors, videos and Polaroid cameras, and a mission: to disrupt (扰乱) the minds of members of the Biami tribe, who had never seen full reflections or images of themselves. "After their first astonished response---covering their mouths and ducking their heads---they stood frozen, staring at their images." Carpenter's devices disturb that inner image, causing discomfort. But not for long. Within days, the villagers groomed (打扮) themselves openly before mirrors and began taking Polaroid shots of each other.
It's unclear if the People of Biami were really as unfamiliar with mirrors as Carpenter thought. But in any case, what's striking isn't how strange their reaction seems, but how related. Do you know how it feels when you make a pleasant remark in a lift, but nobody responds? Or when two people greeting each other misjudge whether to go for a handshake, a hug or a social kiss? That's the same awkwardness: "self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty", as Dahl defines it. Suddenly, I see I'm viewed not as a friendly conversationalist, but as a strange person who talks in the lift.
As awkwardness feels unpleasant, it's natural to want to overcome it. Dahl's initial motivation for writing her book Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness, was to get over her own awkwardness. But after a journey through various awkward experiences, she makes a persuasive case for celebrating it. We live in an era with more opportunities than ever to do so. But awkwardness breaks that false appearance, exposing the imperfect life behind it. It creates a strange kind of social bond---how much in common we have when seeing that behind the disguise (伪装) ---we're all just trying our best to seem perfect.
The awkward you, then, are the real you, the one without the defensive performance. Dahl even indicates that taking a friendlier attitude toward awkwardness might help us make the connections with people holding different ideas.
【1】How did the people of Biami feel when they first saw themselves in the mirror?
A.Shocked at their reflections.
B.Satisfied with their images.
C.Curious about their look.
D.Ashamed of their appearance.
【2】Which of the following awkwardness is "self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty"?
A.You slip over just to the face of your girl in dream.
B.You are caught cheating but get nothing in an exam.
C.You are found standing in pubic with your trousers zip open.
D.You're refused when offering your seat to a seemingly pregnant woman.

B.Seeking perfection.
C.Avoiding pressure from others.

【4】What can be inferred to solve our awkwardness?
A.Treat others in a friendly way.
B.Connect with your friends regularly.

D.Get ready to guard against any threat from others.
24、 Survey after survey indicates that one of our biggest worries in retirement is running out of money. More than a third of retired investors and half who aren’t retired said they worry they will run out of money and be forced to depend on Social Security as their main income source, according to a Wells Fargo-Gallup survey.
You might think that it would make people save more. But few of us even know how much we need to save for a comfortable retirement. However, one way people can feel better about retirement is to start out with as little debt as possible. And that leads us to a question many financial planners are asked by pre-retirees: Should you pay off that mortgage(房贷) before you retire? Unlike many areas of retirement planning, there is no easy answer to this question. The simplest answer is: It depends.
“It’s very dependent on the actual individual,” says Jimmy Lee, chief executive of the Wealth Consulting Group in Las Vegas. “The people who have more reliable sources of income may be more suited to carrying a mortgage,” he says. “Interest rates are a big factor. In today’s low-interest environment, it would make sense to carry a mortgage if your mortgage rate is under 4 percent and you can get an investment rate of 6 percent.”
Mitch Katz, financial adviser and partner at Capital Associates in Bethesda, says having that mortgage paid off helps some people sleep at night. “It’s kind of an emotional thing more than a financial thing,” Katz says. “At the end of the day, financially it makes more sense to not pay off the mortgage. But that’s easy to say in theory and harder in practice.”
“We can control only what we can control,” he says. “You can go to the gym and eat healthy, and walk outside and get hit by a bus. We can’t control that. But, paying off a mortgage, it gives you the ability to pay off other things. Emotionally, it’s very powerful.”
【1】How will those depending on Social Security probably feel?
A.Proud B.Awkward
C.Hopeful D.Ignorant
【2】What benefit might worry in retirement bring?
A.It may result in more savings. B.It leads to a wiser investment.

A.Ask financial planners for suggestions.
B.Pay off the mortgage before retirement.
C.Seek new investment opportunities after retirement.
D.Balance the mortgage against the investment return.

A.Interest rates B.Mental burden

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
Is Alan Sugar a Role Model?
In this paper I would like to discuss the question 4Is Alan Sugar a role model for people going into business?9 There are certainly reasons to answer 'yes’ or ‘no’ to this question.
Alan Sugar has definitely been a successful businessman and celebrity. He left school at 16 with no qualifications and started his own business selling electrical goods out of the back of a van. He now has an estimated fortune of £830 million and is the 84th richest man in the UK. His Amstrad CPC 464 was one of the first home computers and by the end of the 1980s Amstrad had a stock market value of £1.25 billion. In the nineties and later he started buying and selling companies such as Sinclair, Betacom, Viglen and eventually sold Amstrad itself, at a profit. He was also Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. He has now become a TV celebrity with his own TV series The Apprentice', which is a reality TV show where a group of young business people try to win an important position in Alan Sugar’s company.
On the other hand, Alan Sugar has, for a long time, not been very popular with many people. He has a reputation for being a rude and insensitive man. He has treated the contestants on ‘The Apprentice’ badly. In fact Alan Sugar is best known for saying ‘You’re fired!’ to someone in every episode. Many business people have also said that. ‘The Apprentice’ actually shows you how not to run a business, rather than how to run one. Even his business skills have been questioned. Amstrad was very unsuccessful in the nineties and many people blame Sugar personally for that failure.
In conclusion, Alan Sugar is certainly not an ideal role model. However, in my opinion Alan Sugar is a role model because he started with nothing and finished a millionaire. Such a story surely has lessons for all of us.
