二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   More than half a century ago, there were 4, 000 drive-in movie theatres in the United States, and watching a movie from your car was a popular way to spend an evening. But with the number of drive-ins reduced to just a few hundred, outdoor movies have been popping up across the nation. Going to an open-air theatre has become a modern summer pastime for an increasing number of movie fans.

In recent years, outdoor movie screenings have come up in parks, vacant lots (空地) and shopping malls around the nation. On average, about 1, 000 people attend each movie night. It attracts a lot of young professionals, young workers and residents nearby. For some, the outdoor movies bring back the memories of the drive-in theatres of their youths. But for the majorities, they think it is comparable to the atmosphere (氛围) of drive-ins, as they can bring friends, food, good wine, and watch the movie together.

The returning of Americans’ love affair with outdoor movies makes Stephen Bastas ever busier. His seven-member crew sets up screens in various locations mostly in the Washington area every day throughout the summer. They are doing pretty well and they hope to continue the trend. 23、   Modern technology has a strong influence on many things we do. In fact, technology is shaping almost every part of our day-to-day existence, including education. Ashok Goel is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Every term over 300 graduate students take his class on artificial intelligence (AI). The students never meet in person. All of the classes take place online through a website.

Having hundreds of students in a class means Ashok Goel has to answer thousands of questions. He has eight teaching assistants to help him. But even that is not enough to give all the students the help they need. So, in January, he decided to try an experiment. At the start of the spring 2016 semester, he added a new member to his teaching team: Jill Watson. She was able to answer questions faster than most other teaching assistants. And she was available 24 hours a day. It was only at the end of the semester that Goel’s students learned Watson’s secret: she was not a real person. Jill Watson is an AI computer program. Goel said only two students came close to predicting Watson’s true identity. He was worried about telling his students because he thought they would not like being part of the experiment. But once they learned Watson’s identity, they became very excited. “Then, you know what happened? They not only asked that question about Jill, ‘Is she an AI?’ Once the identity of Jill was revealed they also asked if I was an AI.”

Goel now uses Watson in two other classes, but still does not tell his students which of his teaching assistants is a computer program. He hopes this technology will make it easier for teachers to create their own programs to use in and outside the classroom.

【3】What’s the students’ response to Jill Watson?

A.Surprised.

B.Indifferent.

24、Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it is important to have the right answer to that question.

How to Be Prepared

Electricity, water, gas(煤气) and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to fend for yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week. You’ll need food, water and so on. It’s also a good idea to decide ahead of time how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake. You might choose an out-of-the-area friend or relative that family members can call to check on you.

If you’re indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you’re outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you’re driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses.

After an Earthquake

Check for fire. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve(阀). If there’s sign of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box. If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency (紧急情况).Avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Be careful that things may fall out of cupboards when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with just a touch. Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right ,generally follow large quakes. If you leave home, leave a message telling your friends and family your location.

【1】What is advised to do before an earthquake?

A.Making a date with your family the way of reuniting.

B.Preparing enough food for more than a week.

C.Making sure of your telephones in hand.

D.Calling your distant relatives to help.

【2】What is the main idea of paragraph three?

A.Never drive when in earthquake.

B.Keep calm when in earthquake.

C.Never run away when in earthquake.

D.Do and don’t when in earthquake.

【3】Why is asked to close the main valves and control boxes?

A.To reduce the resources.

B.To avoid the possible fire.

C.To better the environment.

D.To avoid the outbreak of earthquake.

【4】What will we do after an earthquake?

A.It’s a good idea to drive to a safe place.

What They Found Inside an Old Sofa Bought for $20 Was Life-Changing

In 2021, SUNY students Reese Werkhoven, Lara Russ, and Cally Guasti were living together in a small apartment. They decided to furnish their apartment.

The three had gone to a Salvation Army store to buy a sofa, and were forced to settle for an old, rather smelly specimen that none of them really liked, but was the only one that was affordable and would fit in their living room. That day, as they were testing out their new purchase, they noticed that something was making a crinkling noise inside the cushions (垫子). Upon further investigation, they discovered a few bubble-wrapped envelopes inside the sofa.

When they opened the envelopes, they were in shock. A large amount of cash was inside. As they continued to pick apart the piece of furniture, they discovered more and more money. Guasti said, “Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we’d find another $1,000 a few minutes later.”

After some time, the three roommates had unearthed a good $40,000 in cash. The fantasies of what they could do with all this money started flowing immediately.

However, they were quickly brought back to reality when they saw that there was a woman’s name on one of the envelopes. That was when the moral dilemma started — what to do? Keep the money for themselves, or try to find the owner?

The three consulted their parents for advice, and the next day, Werkhoven got a call from his mom. She had tracked down the mystery woman and found a phone number.
