22、   U.S. Open Championships

The US Open has been in existence for more than 120 years. The first tournament was held in 1881 at the Newport Casino. It was called the US National Singles Championship. Entry was limited to only those clubs which were members of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, and the competitors were all male, competing in both singles and doubles. Richard Sears won the men’s championship and he went on to win the next six men’s singles championships.

The Wimbledon

In 1875, the All England Croquet Club was troubled financially due to declining membership. A new sport called lawn tennis was gaining fast in popularity and taking away the members. Two years later, a new roller was needed for maintaining its lawns so the club proposed to hold a tournament to raise money. Twenty-two players entered that first Wimbledon tournament which was won by Spencer Gore in straight sets over W. C. Marshall. Two hundred spectators each paid a shilling to watch the final game, enabling the club to buy the needed roller plus some extra cash.

The French Open

The very first French Championship was held way back in 1891, and the tournament has since grown into one of the four tennis Grand Slam tournaments we know today. The first competition was a one-day national championship which was won by a British. The competition was poorly attended by world class players. It took 24 years before it became fully international and an accepted tennis grand slam event. After the First World War, French tennis was achieving stature. Suzanne Lenglen was the predominant French player, winning the championships six times between 1920 and 1926.

The Australian Open

The very first tennis tournament ever played in Australia was held in January 1880, on the courts of the Melbourne Cricket Club. In 1905, the Australian Open was established as the Australasian Tennis Championship and was played at the Warehouseman's Cricket Ground in Melbourne. 23、Winemakers in the Rioja area in northern Spain make some of the best wine in the world. But in recent years, winemakers there have been having difficulty producing good wine. They say when the temperature was cooler, the wine tasted better, but it was 2.2 degrees Celsius higher than average in 2022. Now, a genetic research has shown that grape vines living for more than 35 years are better able to deal with high temperatures brought by climate change.

Researchers like Pablo Carbonell think older grape vines may be able to grow better in higher temperatures. Carbonell looks at rows of gray shapes on his computer screen. Among them was a green rectangle, which represents a kind of grape vine that produces grapes that take longer to ripen, even in warmer conditions.A longer ripeness period is what winemakers want. The current vines produce grapes that are ready to pick too early. Such grapes do not make wine that has the right color and smell and has too much alcohol.

People who work in the vineyards have long crossed old vines with new ones. Now they are working with special laboratories to find a climate-resistant vine. One of them is the Vine and Wine Research Institute, known as the ICVV in Spain. The lab is working to keep the Spanish wine making industry alive as temperatures rise. The scientists there are studying the genomes(基因组)of commonly used grapes in wine and looking for traits,or qualities, that might permit the vines to survive in a warmer climate instead of looking for mutation(变异)that causes diseases.

In addition to the genetic research, scientists are also working on different planting methods.A winery called RODA is planting vines in a curve instead of a straight line. The hope is that plants will soak up more water this way. The new vineyard is made up of vines that were over 100 years old and moved from another place.

Maria Santolaya is an agricultural engineer and part of RODA’s technical team. She said the hot weather was very problematic. But,“our biggest concern,”she added,“is what will happen in 20 or 30 years. We don’t really know how things will come out.”

【1】What mainly causes the quality of wine to decline in Spain?

A.Shortage of rainfall.

B.High temperature.

C.Genetic variation.

D.Geographical location.

【2】What does the Carbonell’s research find in paragraph 2?

A.Grapes picked too early won’t have the sugar content.

B.Grapes with a longer ripeness period make good wine.

C.Grapes in hot regions won’t lose their original flavor.

D.Grapes from older vines have a rise in production.

【3】What is being done to keep the Spanish winemaking industry alive?

A.Make use of older grape vines.

B.Develop disease-resistant grape vines.

C.Replace old grape vines with new ones.

D.Cultivate grape vines with abundant water.

【4】What is Maria’s attitude to climate change?

A.Indifferent.

B.Unclear.

C.Worried.

D.Conservative.

24、   There’re currently 21.5 million students in America, and many will be funding their college on borrowed money. Given that there’s now over $1.3 trillion in student loans on the books, it's pretty clear that many students are far from sensible. The average student’s debt upon graduation now approaches $40, 000, and as college becomes ever more expensive, calls to make it “free” are multiplying. Even Hillary Clinton says that when it comes to college, “Costs won’t be a barrier.”

But the only way college could be free is if the faculty and staff donated their time, the buildings required no maintenance, and campuses required no utilities. As long as it's impossible to produce something from nothing, costs are absolutely a barrier.

The actual question we debate is who should pay for people to go to college. If taxpayers are to bear the cost of forgiving student loans, shouldn’t they have a say in how their money is used?

At least taxpayers should be able to decide what students will study on the public dime. If we're going to force taxpayers to foot the bill for college degrees, students should only study those subjects that are of greatest benefit to taxpayers. After all, students making their own choices in this respect is what caused the problem in the first place. We simply don’t need more poetry, gender studies, or sociology majors. How do we know which subjects benefit society? Easy.

Average starting salaries give a clear indication of what type of training society needs its new workers to have. Certainly, there’re benefits to a college major beyond the job a student can perform. But if we’re talking about the benefits to society, the only thing that matters is what the major enables the student to produce for society. And the value of what the student can produce is reflected in the wage employers are willing to pay the student to produce it.

A low wage for elementary school teachers, however, doesn’t mean elementary education isn’t important. It simply means there’re too many elementary school teachers already.

Meanwhile, there’re few who’re willing and able to perform jobs requiring a petroleum engineering major, so the value of one more of those people is very high.

So we can have taxpayers pick up students’ tuition in exchange for dictating what those students will study. Or we can allow students both to choose their majors and pay for their education themselves. But in the end, one of two things is true:

Either a college major is worth its cost or it isn’t. If yes, taxpayer financing isn’t needed. If not, taxpayer financing isn’t desirable. Either way, taxpayers have no business paying for students’ college education.

【1】What does the author think of college students funding their education through loans?

A.They only expect to get huge returns.

B.They are acting in an unwise way.

C.They benefit at taxpayers’ expense.

D.They will regret doing so someday.

【2】What should students do if taxpayers are to bear their college costs?

A.Work even harder to repay society.

B.Choose their subjects more carefully.

C.Choose majors that will serve society’s practical need.

D.Allow taxpayers to participate in college administration.

【3】What does the author say about the value of a student’s college education?

A.It is well reflected in their average starting salary.

B.It is to be proved by what they can do on the job.

C.It is underestimated by profit-seeking employers.

D.It is reflected in how they remove social barriers.

【4】What message does the author want to convey in the passage?

A.Students should think carefully whether to go to college

B.Taxpayers should only finance the most gifted students.

C.The worth of a college education is open to debate.

D.College students should fund their own education.
