22、In the United States, more than 90 people died across six southern states when strong winds known as tornadoes destroyed homes, office buildings and religious centers on Friday night. Victor Gensini, a weather scientist at Northern Illinois University, called the tornado that traveled hundreds of miles on Friday “Remarkable.” He said the tornado traveled about 300 kilometers. Normally, tornadoes die out in minutes, he said, but this one lasted for hours. He said the storm moved as fast as a car going down a large roadway.

Such weather events do happen in December, but they do not happen often this time of year because the temperature on the ground is not so different from that high in the sky. However, people in Kentucky said the air was warm and wet on Friday. Weather scientists said the mixing of the warm and cold air can create “instability (不稳定)” which produces storms and the fast, spinning (旋转的) winds of tornadoes.

The question is whether the deadly storm came because of climate change. The weather scientists are not completely sure. Gensini said strong winds are common in the winter, but they do not create tornadoes because the air close to the Earth is also cold. Harold Brooks studies tornadoes at the National Severe Storms Laboratory. While the US has more tornadoes than any other country, tornadoes only form once out of every 10 strong storms. As a result, he said, it is hard to say if the winter tornadoes have something to do with climate change. Gensini, however, said the conditions for strong storms are becoming more common in the winter as the planet warms up.

Jason Furtado, a scientist at the University of Oklahoma, said in the past tornadoes happened more often during warm days in the summer. However, as the winter becomes warmer, especially in the southern US, the tornado season will change. More will happen in the winter and fewer will happen in the summer. He said people who live in places like Kentucky, which suffered the most from Friday’s storms, are now living in an area where tornadoes are common.

24、I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling my eyes at the memory.

Our flight left the Orlando Airport one Friday morning. But immediately upon the take-off, it was clear that something was wrong. The aircraft was bumping (颠簸) up and down. All the experienced travellers, including me, looked around with knowing (会意的) smiles. If you fly much, you see these things and learn to act calmly about them. However, we did not remain calm for long.

Minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling quickly. The pilot soon made a serious announcement. “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “Our indicators show that the control system has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando Airport. The flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping (倾倒) fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough touchdown.” In other words, we were about to crash. Many travellers looked visibly frightened now. No one faces death without fear, I thought.

Then a couple of rows to my left, I heard a still calm voice, a woman’s voice, speaking in an absolutely normal conversational tone. I had to find the source of this voice. All around, people cried. Many screamed. Finally, I saw her. In this state of complete confusion and lack of order, a mother was talking to her child. The woman, in her mid-30s, was staring full into the face of her daughter, who looked to be four years old. The child listened closely, sensing the importance of her mother’s words. The mother’s eye held the child so fixed that she seemed untouched by the sounds of grief and fear around her.

Finally, I leaned over and could hear this soft sure voice with the tone of comfort. Over and over again, the mother said, “I love you so much. Remember, no matter what happens, I love you always.” Fortunately, our landing gear (起落架) held at last and our touchdown was not a tragedy.

However, the voice I heard that day never faded. That mom showed me what a real hero looks like.

【1】What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A.The crew was getting ready for a take-off.

B.The travellers were taken good care of on the plane.

C.The aircraft was not in normal condition when flying.

D.The passengers were enjoying themselves on the aircraft.

B.To have the airplane not bump.

C.To make the airplane to fly faster.

D.To make sure the control system worked well.

【3】How was the woman after hearing the pilot’s words?

A.She looked quite angry.

B.She didn’t appear so worried.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

It seems teenagers really are addicted to their phones. The average teen spends nearly 41 days of the year on their mobile—or two hours and 40 minutes a day, research has discovered.

The study of 1,500 parents with teenagers living at home found that youngsters from Liverpool clocked up the most time on their phones, with 48 days spent texting and browsing apps. Teens from Glasgow and Cardiff came third and second. London teens came bottom of the list with 37 days.

Researchers said that mobile phones are “increasingly our portal to 24-hour shopping, news and our chief mode of entertainment”. The research also found that 55 percent of parents often wonder how they survived without the Internet or a mobile phone as a teenager. Some 45 percent said it was easier being a teenager now than when they were young. Despite this 85 percent believe they had more freedom as a teenager.

It follows a study earlier this year which found children can get stressed or start to panic when they are separated from their phones. Researchers conducted experiments on 87 smartphone owners aged between 18and 26.

The study states: “We are in the middle of a nascent digital culture, with children being born into the world of smart devices. This age group was chosen because they are considered to be ‘cellphone natives’. The results support that humans form attachment toward their mobile: they seek the proximity(接近)of the mobile and show stress response upon separation.”
