Having previously volunteered for two years as an assistant yoga teacher in her home country, Kajal was enthusiastic about volunteering and began looking for volunteer opportunities that match her interests on VolunteerMatch. “I enjoy volunteering and it’s a way to make an impact in my new community,” says Kajal.

Kajal was drawn to a volunteer opportunity with the Meridian International Center to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). Kajal had previous experience, and the position also afforded her the opportunity to work remotely. After connecting with the opportunity on VolunteerMatch and successfully completing the application process, Kajal got to work. Her role involved reviewing applications from potential candidates for a four-week fellowship in the U.S. She was responsible for describing the business ideas presented by these candidates, assessing the social impact of their businesses, and determining the strength of candidates to carry out their plans.

Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills, while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting.

She is now looking for her next volunteer opportunity and reflects positively on her experience with Meridian International Center, “A new country brings in a lot of new experiences and volunteering helped me to settle into a new environment,” adds Kajal. “By helping others, I felt needed in society. 22、Could the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen be a well-engineered AI software program? It’s a question becoming increasingly pressing as machine language-learning software continues to evolve.

Much of this is just nerves. Today’s AI creative writing programs are not yet at a stage of development where they pose a serious threat to Colleen Hoover or Charles Dickens. But while attention continues to focus on the possibility of a blanket takeover of human literature by AI, far less consideration has been given to the prospect of AI co-working with humans.

Earlier this month, American sci-fi writer Ken Liu, who had been awarded Hugo and Nebula to his name, joined 12 other professional authors for a writing workshop on Google’s Wordcraft. This AI tool, a language generating model, is not yet publicly available but is advertised as an AI-powered writing assistant that can, when given the right instruction from the writer, provide helpful descriptions, create lists of objects or emotional states, and even brainstorm ideas.

The writers at the workshop, however, emerged with mixed reports. “Wordcraft is too sensible. Wow!” Robin Sloan wrote. “But ‘sensible’ is another word for predictable, overused and boring. My intention here is to produce something unexpected.”

I’m unconvinced that writers awarded the Nobel Prize have much to fear from AI. Their work, and that of countless other novelists, short story writers, dramatists and poets, is too particular, too beautifully unique. Even if a model learned what they had done in the past, it would not be able to predict where their creativity might take them in the future. But for authors who write following a pattern, AI might step in, first as assistants before some day to authorship.

Production-line novels are nothing new. In the 1970s, Barbara Cartland, who wrote more than 723 books in her lifetime, many of which are romance bestsellers, would read her novels for her secretary to type up at the remarkable rate of roughly seven chapters a week. But already machine has replaced the secretary’s role. Perhaps creative writing software isn’t that far from replacing the Mrs. Cartlands of today.

【1】Which aspect of AI calls for more attention?

A.Its damage to our nerves.

B.Its progress in literary studies.

C.Its cooperation with humans.

D.Its influence on human literature.

【2】What can we learn about Wordcraft from the text?

A.It generates novels automatically.

B.It outperforms professional writers.

C.Its works receive praises from the public.

D.Its works bear similarity to existing ones.

【3】What can writers do to avoid the threat from AI?

A.Increase writing speed.

B.Use diverse resources.

C.Produce creative works.

D.Follow the latest patterns.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Will AI Replace Human Writers?

B.AI Warns Mrs. Cartlands of Today

C.Is Writing Running into a New Era?

D.Word craft Lies at the Center of Debate

23、   For students of all ages, final exams can cause anxiety. The key to easing that anxiety is to plan ahead and to use proper learning techniques in the weeks ahead of the exams. 1

Underline key terms and concepts in notes and textbooks and then consider putting them into thinking maps. 2 But the practice of writing the information will help you remember them.

3 Studying in a small group can allow the members to compare notes and share learning strategies. And quizzing each other can be a fun way to cover course information. Belonging to a study group will also help you to get explanations of concepts that you do not understand.

Study independently the night before the exam. 4 By preparing for  the exam weeks in advance, the final night should be devoted to going over the learning tips and other notes. It should be a time of refreshing your mind, not trying to understand information.

Get a good night’s sleep and have a healthy breakfast on the morning of the exam. Try doing some relaxation activities. 5 This will help you start the exam with a calm, focused mind.

A.It may seem like spending a lot of time.

B.Form a study group with fellow students.

C.Share notes in small groups before exams.

D.Actually, it is not difficult to get rid of anxiety.

E.This is not the time to make efforts at the last moment.

F.These could be deep breaths, yoga or listening to music.

G.The following steps will help you prepare for the exams.

24、   An 8-year-old southeast Kansas girl is being praised for her quick, calm thinking. She grabbed the steering wheel(方向盘) and drove the family’s SUV when her mother fell unconscious on their highway ride to school.

Abby Porter and her mom, Shelly, were heading for her school in Riverton when Shelly had a medical emergency. She passed out(昏倒) behind the wheel.

Abby is a second-grader whose father sometimes lets her drive their tractor. With her mother falling down heavily, Abby leaned over and took the wheel. At some point, Abby even successfully performed a U-turn on the four-lane highway, because she was going home to her daddy, according to Galena Police Chief Larry Delmont.

“That was at 8:37 in the morning, and there was a lot of traffic,” Delmont said. Officer Jimmy Hamilton noticed the SUV going about 20 mph and weaving a bit between the two lanes. He suspected someone was driving under the influence. As he got closer, he noticed the woman fell over in the driver’s seat and saw Abby at the wheel.

Hamilton tried to get in front of Abby’s car to slow her down, but she kept switching lanes to avoid bumping into his car. Hamilton got alongside her and told Abby to stop the vehicle, but she didn’t know how. He then told her she needed to bump into him to stop the car, but Abby said she didn’t want to because she was afraid. He convinced Abby bumping into his car was OK.

‘‘I never saw her cry,” Hamilton said. “From just the expression on her face and the tone of her voice, you could tell she was scared. But she stayed with it.”

Emergency crews got Abby’s mother to the hospital, but Delmont said he didn’t know what caused her to lose consciousness.

The police department in Galena, a town of about 3,000 residents about 150 miles south of Kansas City, planned to present Abby with a plaque(匾牌) for “outstanding bravery in a life-threatening situation”.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150 左右。

Henry Coulton sat on the bus and watched the miles go past. He was still hundreds of miles away from his destination and from the person who needed him. His wife, Delia, was in Los Angeles visiting her mother when she fell ill.

At first, Delia just told him that she had a stomachache. However, two days later, Henry became worried because he noticed that Delia was paler and thinner. ”You need to go to see a doctor now!”Henry insisted.

Later Delia went to the hospital and was informed that there was something wrong with her left lung. When Henry heard the bad news, he felt shocked because his wife never smoked. Although he didn’t understand the medical terms, all he remembered was the words “a sizeable tumor(肿瘤)”.

The doctors didn’t want to wait. The longer they waited, the higher the risk. They were operating immediately, so Henry left for Los Angeles hurriedly. He knew he wasn’t going to be there to hold Delia’s hand and that was what was hurting him the most. He looked out of the window so the other passengers wouldn’t see the tears pouring down his cheeks.

Suddenly, Henry’s phone rang. “Henry?” he heard Delia’s voice. “Baby, I’m going into the OR in a little while, so I want to hear your voice. . . ” Henry said, “I wish I were there, holding your hand. ”“I wish you were here, singing my favorite song, ” Delia replied. “But I can sing it now if you like. . . You’re going to sing a song on the bus?” “Yes, I am!” Henry took a deep breath. Then he got to his feet and held the phone up so the other passengers could see it. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry to interrupt your peace and quiet. Please be patient. My wife, Delia, is in the hospital and she’s about to go into surgery (手术), so I’m going to sing her favorite song. ” Then Henry started singing, “When you’re down and troubled, and you need some loving care. . . ”

He kept singing, and then he had a huge surprise!
