Lights Out at Bedtime
There are plenty of good reasons to power up a personal desktop or laptop computer in the evening — writing e-mails,chatting on social networks or making purchases over the Internet, for instance. But various studies indicate that people who stare at a PC’s bright monitor shortly before going to bed probably sleep less soundly than they would otherwise because the light seriously affects their natural wake-sleep cycle."They haven't proved it though," says Dieter Kunz, the team's director at Charite's Psychiatric Clinic in St.Hedwig's Hospital in Berlin.
Similarly, exposure to just 10 minutes of normal bathroom lighting is enough to free the sleep hormone melatonin, which regulates people's natural wake-sleep cycle and makes them sleepy at nightfall.
Ten years ago,a team of British and American researchers detected a photo-pigment(光敏色素) in the human eye that signals to the body whether it is day or night, summer or winter. The photo-pigment is especially sensitive to blue light.
"The blue light more or less tells the body,'It's daytime,be awake,'" Kunz says.Monitors have a mostly cold white light content and scientists suspect the photo-pigment may react similarly to it.So the longer people look into the bright light, the more awake they become - and then sleep poorly.
A lot of people have difficulty "switching off" in the evening.About half of the women in Germany and a quarter of the men sleep poorly.
Environmental factors are only one of the possible causes.Job stress as well as personal and health concerns are also the main reasons for their sleep problems.
In addition, electronic objects' standby lights and indicator lamps can be annoying in the dark and affect sleep."Sound scientific evidence is still lacking on this matter," Kunz notes.
According to Kunz, those who cannot go without their computer in the evening should turn down the blue content if possible and lower the brightness somewhat."But nobody does that because, after all,you want to concentrate while working at the computer and the light helps the brain."

22、Many airlines overbook their flights—meaning they sell more tickets than there are seats on the plane. But why do they do it, and what happens to passengers who arrive at the airport only to learn that their seats are already taken?
Like any business, airlines want to make money. So, they try to fill as many seats on each plane as possible. After all, empty seats are a financial loss on airlines.
Airlines look at data from past flights to predict the number of expected “no-shows”, passengers who canceled their flight, don’t show up or arrive late because of the connecting flights. For example, if the data shows that eight people normally don’t show up for flights from New York to Los Angeles, the airline might sell eight extra tickets.
However, the airlines sometimes get their numbers wrong. If there are too many people and not enough seats, the airline may ask passengers to volunteer to take a later flight for compensation (赔偿) —which might include money, travel vouchers (优惠券), free meals and hotel rooms. Some airlines have offered as much as $10,000 to get people to volunteer. However, if there are no volunteers, airlines may have to make passengers give up their seats. This is called “bumping”.
Although there’s no exact science, it’s often the lowest fares that get bumped to the next flight first. This means those flying business class or first class are highly unlikely to be bumped. Airlines have also admitted to bumping people based on the time of check—in arriving last minute is not recommended. Certain groups are less likely to be denied boarding due to overbooking, such as frequent flyers, the elderly, families with young children and people with disabilities.
In the US, if a bumped passenger is able to arrive at their destination less than an hour late using another flight, no compensation is required by law—although airlines may offer some. If they arrive over two hours late, the law requires that they be given 400% of the one-way ticket price, up to a total of $1,550.
【1】How do airlines determine the number of extra tickets?
A.By analyzing the passengers’ loyalty.

23、For Suilasaikhan, a man living in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR)(内蒙古自治区), life was hard years ago. When the wind blew, the sand made it almost impossible for him to see anything. He had to find his way back home by following the barking of dogs.
Thankfully, things are much better today. About one third of the desert is now covered with trees, and sandstorms are less common. Ian Teh, who comes from Malaysia, came to China last year and was amazed to see people planting trees in the several deserts in northern China. "To be honest, it was hard to imagine it was ever a desert at all," he said.
These are the results of Chinas years-long efforts to deal with desertification (沙漠化). In the 1950s, this widespread problem affected the life of about 400 million people in 18 provinces and autonomous regions in China. So China started several programs to deal with it. For example, the Three-North Shelter Forest Program, saw thousands of trees planted in northern China.
In 1994, China joined the United Nations' convention (公约) against desertification and created the world's first law on sand prevention in 2001. With these efforts, the past five years have seen the area of desert in China decrease by 242,400 hectares.
Desertification isn't the problem only in China. With china's success in dealing with desertification, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) believes the country is a good example for other countries to follow. "China is one of the most successful countries in greening the desert and has lessons to share with the world." UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim told Xinhua.

24、Dr. Michael Prager, a leading Botox expert, said that a growing number of women are developging something called “computer face”. He also said that professionals who worked long hours in front of a screen were ending up with saggy jowls(颚骨),“turkey neck” and deep-set wrinkles on their forehead and around their eyes.
The Botox expert said that, of all his clients, office workers were most likely to show premature (过早的) signs(迹象) of aging. “If you are one of the unfortunate people who frown(皱眉)while you are concentrating on the screen then, over time, you will end up with frown lines.” Dr. Prager said. “What is perhaps more surprising is the number of women with saggy jowls because they are sitting in one position for so long. If you spend most of the time looking down then the neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually giving you a second neck.”
Dr. Prager, who has a practice near Harley Street in London, said he encourages his clients to put a mirror next to their computer so they can see if they are frowning at the screen. “When people are stressed or thinking hard about something, then they will often put on a ‘grumpy face’ without even knowing what they are doing. When my clients put a mirror next to their desk, they are often surprised by the angry, frowning face which stares back at them.”
He said, “The women I am seeing at the moment have only been using computers at work for the last decade or so. But women in their 20s have grown up with them and use them for every single task. I think the problem is going to become much, much worse. In another ten years, they could be looking quite awful.”
Dr. Prager said there were several simple steps which could avoid “computer face” such as regular screen breaks and stretching the neck muscles. And, of course, there was always Botox. He said that, after a couple of sessions of Botox, the habit of “grumpy face” could be broken.
