21、   Australia's biggest soft drink makers, including Coca-Cola and Pepsi, promised on Monday to cut industry-wide sugar use by a fifth over seven years to prevent obesity in a country where nearly a third of the population is dangerously fat.

Australia has the fifth-highest rate of obesity in the developed world, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development,a health condition that can exacerbate(使恶化)problems from diabetes to heart disease.

Beverage(饮料)producers in Australia have already seen some consumers switch away from sugary drinks because of health concerns and they have promised the reduction as authorities press for a sugar tax similar to one introduced in Britain in April.

“We think this is a step in the right direction, ”said Geoff Parker, chief executive officer of the Australian Beverages Council (ABC) , the main body representing non-alcoholic drink makers, an industry which generates A $5 billion ($3.7 billion) in annual revenue.“We're certainly encouraging other sectors of the food supply, and indeed other categories to join with us to reduce sugar across the portfolio to help handle what is a really a complex problem and that is obesity. ”

Companies will aim for a 10 percent reduction in total sugar per 100 milliliters in their drinks by 2020 and a 20 percent reduction by 2025, achieved via a combination of recipe modification and increasing sales of low-sugar beverages, the Beverages Council said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said last year drinking fewer sweet drinks was the best way to prevent excessive weight and prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, although fat and salt in processed foods were also to blame.

It has pressed for governments to tax sugar.

In Australia, where according to WHO statistics two-thirds of adults are overweight and nearly a third are obese or grossly overweight, the Australian Medical Association has pressed for a sugar tax but it has been resisted by the country's two major political parties. “We don't want to see the price of groceries go up.”Health Minister Greg Hunt told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Monday.

A.They wanted to cut down the cost.

B.They helped people to lose weight.

C.They kept people away from sugary drinks.

D.They responded to the tax law from governments.

【2】What can we learn from Geoff Parker?

A.People are unwilling to drink non-alcoholic drinks.

B.Beverage producers take a positive attitude to sugar reduction.

C.Many soft drink makers manage to prevent the obesity.

D.The Australian Beverages Council has encouraged people to keep fit.

【3】How will soft drink producers reduce sugar according to the Beverages Council?

A.They will set a goal for the sugar use in their drinks.

B.They will limit the total sugar to 10-20 percent of drinks.

C.They will adjust ingredients and sell more low-sugar drinks.

D.They will produce more low-sugar beverages every year.

【4】What should people do to keep away from obesity according to WHO?

A.People should push governments to tax sugar.

B.People should reduce fat and salt in their food.

C.People should try to reduce sugary drinks in diet.

D.People should lose more weight to keep healthy.

22、My grandson, Daniel, and I have always been very close. When Daniel’s father remarried after a divorce, Daniel, who was eleven, and his little sister, Kristie, came to live with us. My husband and I were more than happy to have kids in the house again.

Things were going along just fine until the diabetes (糖尿病) I’ve lived with most of my adult life started affecting my eyes, and then more seriously, my kidneys (肾). Then everything seemed to fall apart.

Three times a week, I had to go to the hospital to be hooked up to a dialysis machine (透析机). I was living, but I couldn’t really call it a life --- it was an existence. I had no energy. I dragged myself through daily chores and slept as much as I could. My sense of humor seemed to disappear.

Daniel, seventeen by then, was really affected by the change in me. He tried as hard as he could to make me laugh, to bring back the grandma who loved to clown around (开玩笑) with him. Even in my sorry state, Daniel could still bring a smile to my face.

But things were not improving. After a year on dialysis, my condition was deteriorating (恶化) and the doctors felt that if I didn’t receive a kidney transplant within six months, I would surely die. No one told Daniel this, but he knew --- he said all he had to do was look after me. To top it off, as my condition worsened, there was a chance that I would become too weak to have the transplant surgery at all, and then there would be nothing they could do for me. So we started the tense and desperate wait for a kidney.

I was adamant (坚决的) that I didn’t want a kidney from anyone I knew. I would wait until an appropriate kidney became available, or I would literally die waiting. But Daniel had other plans. The time that he took me to my dialysis appointments, he did a little secret research on his own. Then he announced his intention to me.

“Grandma, I’m giving you one of my kidneys. I’m young and I’m healthy …” He paused. He could see I wasn’t at all happy with his offer. He continued, almost in whisper, “And most of all, I couldn’t stand it if you weren’t around.” His face wore an expression of appeal mixed with determination. He can be as stubborn as a mule (驴) once he decides on something --- but I’ve been told many times that I can out-stubborn any mule!

We argued. I couldn’t let him do it. We both knew that if he gave up his kidney, he would also give up his life’s dream: to play football. It was all he ever talked about. And he was good, too. Daniel was co-captain and star defensive tackle (防守阻截队员) of his high school team; he expected to apply for a football scholarship and was looking forward to playing college football. He just loved the sport.

“How can I let you throw away the thing that means the most to you?” I pleaded with him.

“Grandma,” he said softly, “compared to your life, football means nothing to me.”

After that, I couldn’t argue anymore. So we agreed to see if he was a good donor (捐赠者) match, and then we’d discuss it further. When the tests came back, they showed Daniel was a perfect match. That was it. I knew I wasn’t going to win that argument, so we scheduled the transplant.

Both surgeries went smoothly. As soon as I came out of the anesthesia (麻醉) , I could tell things were different. I felt great! The nurses in the intensive care unit had to keep telling me to lie back and be quiet --- I wasn’t supposed to be that lively! I was afraid to go to sleep, for fear I would break the spell (魔法) and wake up the way I had been before. But the good feeling didn’t go away, and I spent the evening joking and laughing with anyone who would listen. It was so wonderful to feel alive again.

The next day they moved me out of ICU and onto the floor where Daniel was recuperating (复原) three doors away. His grandfather helped him walk down to see me as soon as I was moved into my room. When we saw each other, we did not know what to say. Holding hands, we just sat there and looked at each other for a long time, overwhelmed by the deep feeling of love that connected us.

Finally, he spoke, “Was it worthwhile, grandma?”

I laughed a little ruefully (懊悔). “It was for me! But was it for you?” I asked him.

He nodded and smiled at me. “I’ve got my grandma back.”

And I have my life back. It still amazes me. Every morning, when I wake up, I thank God --- and Daniel --- for this miracle. A miracle born of the purest love.

23、For as long as there have been gifts, we naturally make choices based on the recipient (接受者). But what if we have been wrong all along and that we could turn things around, which not only made gift buying easier, but the recipient happier?

In 2015, psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin conducted an online survey, which suggested that when people buy gifts, they prefer to choose something based on the recipient’s personality and tastes. Most people also said that they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.

But Human and Aknin wondered if this approach to giving failed to take advantage of the way we connect as people. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals(揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.

To find out how that approach goes down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes to give to a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in mind.

Human and Aknin suggest it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be—then we “may well be advised to offer more self-reflective gifts”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely suit the recipient’s practical needs or tastes as one acquired purely with that in mind.

Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act, the psychologists added. Because it reduces the risk of revealing poor knowledge of a recipient by attempting to buy something that fits their character—and failing.

But a note of caution here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal self-obsession” —and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.

【1】From the Mother’s Day card test, we can conclude that ________.

A.gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the giver

B.most people choose gifts with the recipient in mind

C.most people choose gifts based on their personal tastes

24、In Australia, plenty of wild things can bite or, sting (刺痛) you. Strangely enough, one of them is a tree. The rain forests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging tree known as Dendrocnide.

Many people call it the gympie-gympie tree—a name given to the tree by native Australians. “Like other stinging plants, the stinging tree is covered in needle-like hairs, which are around five millimeters in length and can inject (注射) poison when they make contact with skin. The pain caused by the tree’s sting is severe and it can last for hours, days or weeks,” said Irina Vetter, associate professor at the University of Queensland.

Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting. Now researchers at the University of Queensland have discovered what makes the tree’s sting so bad. After carefully studying different kinds of gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce. This allowed them to identify a group of chemicals they believed was responsible for the pain.

The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”.

Sure enough, when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked (舔) the places where they’d been injected, which showed that they hurt in those places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found that they formed a knot-like (扭结的) shape. The shape makes the chemicals very stable, which helps explain why the pain stays so long.

The knot-like shape of gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and cone snails. The scientists were surprised to see three very different kinds of life all using similar poisons. Spiders and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures. It’s not clear how stinging helps the gympie-gympie tree.

The scientists also discovered gympietides seem to cause everlasting changes to the channels in sensory neurons (感觉神经元). This action also helps to explanation why the pain lasts so long.

“By understanding how this poison works, we hope to provide better treatment for those who have been stung by the plant, to ease or stop the pain,” said Vetter.

【1】What is the function of Paragraph 2?

A.To provide information about the stinging tree.

B.To warn people of the danger of the stinging tree.

C.To stress the importance of studying the stinging tree.

D.To explain the reason why the stinging tree is poisonous.

【2】What do scientists fail to find out about the stinging tree?

A.How it produces poison.

B.What poison it produces.

C.How the sting helps the tree.

D.The consequences of its sting.

【3】What does Irina Vetter think of the research findings?

A.They are not reliable.

B.They are of great value.

C.They have no practical use.

D.They need to be further proved.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Scientists discover the stinging tree’s secret

C.Effective ways to avoid being hurt by stinging trees

D.Scientists discover a strange tree species in Australia

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Raj learns a lesson

Raj is a middle-aged man. Although he was born in a poor family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a welding (焊接) shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.

However, Raj’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life to his family. Raj was an average student in school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Raj’s dream was to become a doctor. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.

In order not to depend on Raj, his father continued to work in his shop. After getting a permanent job, Raj’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and meanwhile was promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.

Later, Raj began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Almost 6 to 7 years later, Raj was neither able to manage all the household expenses, nor pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.

It so happened that Raj’s father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work. He requested Raj to give some money for his treatment and other household expenses. Raj, who was already suffering from financial crisis, not only shouted at his parents but also complained to his parents, “You never give me what I needed and wanted and it took me more than 10 years to get settled. Now, while I am again struggling for money, you are not doing anything to help me, but instead are a burden to me! So, please don’t come to me again.”

His parents were left shocked.
