21、Nonverbal (非语言的)Communication
When you are in another country, it is important to know the language, but it is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally. Before saying anything, people communicate nonverbally by making gestures. According to an investigation(调查),only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don’t know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.
In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In Southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I’ve heard you.”
In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone’s life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting (侮辱)and should not be used there.
In the United States, raising your clasped(握紧的) hands above your head means “I’m the champion” or “I’m the winner”. It is the sign that prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman(政治家) made this gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship.
There are other nonverbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer to each other than English people. English people don’t like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. For example friends touch each other on the arm. They often put an arm around a friend when they say “hello” or “goodbye”.
【1】It is very important to know how to communicate nonverbally when you are in another country because .

22、Let’s be real: apologizing can be difficult. Nobody likes to admit that they were wrong, or that they offended somebody. However, you still have agreed-upon ways to acknowledge that you did something wrong and to express your remorse to others. When you have harmed someone, a genuine, well-given apology demonstrates that you care about them, allows you to take responsibility for your actions, rebuilds trust, and prevents the further deterioration of relationships. It can also help you avoid the shame and guilt of wronging someone from eating away at your self-esteem.
A proper apology should express your understanding that you've done something wrong. Telling somebody “I'm sorry you feel that way!” is not an adequate apology. You should also be aware of over apologizing; it can have negative effects, too. So try to make an effective apology when the situation calls for one.
As Professor Karen A. Cerulo from the University of New Jersey explained, an effective apology has several elements. Number one: don't wait. Forget your ego. Unless you're involved in a legal situation, where you're advised not to speak, you should make an apology right away. Second, don't apologize for what people thought. Instead of saying, “Tm sorry that you misunderstood me!” or “I'm sorry that you misinterpreted or misread my actions!”, apologize for what you did—not for what other people might have thought about it. Third, don't give context. The “why” of what you did is less important to people than your regret and remorse. Finally, there's really a successful formula that you need to use: identify your victim right up front, then express remorse, and, if possible, make restitution.
Dr. Ben Ho, an associate professor of economics at Vasser College, says that people often want to see an apology that costs something. This cost doesn't have to be financial; it can come in the form of admitting your incompetence in making the previous error or promising to do better in the future.
As for promises, avoid the ones that can't be kept. Don't say that you’ll ensure that this will not happen again if you not confident it won't. It could come back to bite you, Martin Stone of Public Relation agency Tank explains. And do remember that the use of "but” can hugely change the tone of an apology. As Stone points out, “I'm sorry but …” sounds like you are making excuses and aren't actually taking any form of responsibility.

24、Scientists in Michigan have developed a forest fire alarm system. It can not only detect when a fire begins but also call for help. This battery-free device hangs like an ornament(装饰品) in a tree and harvests all the energy it needs from the natural swinging of branches. Such a sensor could watch the woods for a decade without human attention.
“For forest fire monitoring, you don’t need high amounts of energy,” notes Cao Changyong, an engineer at Michigan State University who led the team behind the new device. It recharges itself about every 10 minutes with just enough power to take a measurement. That’s plenty of time, Cao says, “to generate sufficient energy.”
There’s an obvious need for fast monitoring of remote forests. Every year fires burn millions of acres in the United States. Early detection also can save lives right now. Forest fires are spotted from satellites or fire towers. Neither, Cao notes, is as fast or low-cost as tree-hanging sensors would be.
Cao’s group faced some challenges in creating its new sensors. For example, these have to produce enough power to survey the forest and send out a signal and that power source has to be durable. To tackle the problems, they decided to convert(转化) mechanical motion into electricity. The device to do this is known as a TENG, short for triboelectric nanogenerator. Scientists have explored TENGs as one way to harvest energy from the natural world, including harvesting energy from impacts on tabletops, falling rain, and even keyboards. The new TENG for forest use produces a current when a tree branch swings. That current is small, yet enough to power a thermometer(温度计) to detect the temperature changes signaling a fire.
Cao says his team’s new model has not yet been tested over long time periods in the real world, but the device is ready. All he needs now is the money to build more of them.
【1】What is special about Cao’s sensor?
A.It is self-powered.
B.It is shaped like a branch.
C.It can be used as a charger.
D.It keeps power for about a day .
