二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Ants are truly incredible creatures. In addition to talents like predicting earthquakes and saving themselves from drowning during floods, the hardworking insects go all out to protect their own comrades, often carrying the wounded back to the nest to heal. Now researchers have discovered ants who explode and sacrifice themselves to save their nests from attackers.

Although scientists have known about the existence of exploding ants since 1916, they were first found in the rainforests of Borneo in Southeast Asia by an international team of researchers led by Alice Laciny, a graduate student at the Natural History Museum, Vienna.

The researchers noticed that during the day, when the ants went outside to look for food, they would be closely monitored by a small army of “guards”, who touched each member as it went in and out of the nest. Upon running into an attacker, the guard ant would angle its back part towards the attacking creature and shrink its stomach. This caused the ant’s body to explode and release a yellow, deadly goo(粘状物), which instantly killed the attacker.

The ability to explode, however, was not universal among the species and appeared to be possessed only by minor worker ants, usually the smallest ants of the nest. Even more interesting was that while the minor members were blowing themselves up, the large worker ants with oversized plug-shaped heads, placed barriers at the nest’s entrance to prevent other potential enemies from entering.

While the defense measure may sound extreme, Tomer Czazkes believes it is necessary. The behavioral ecologist at Germany’s University of Regensburg says since the insects live in large groups, they are a natural and easy source of food for ant eaters. They, therefore, have to find ways to protect themselves. Ants are not the only insects known to conduct this type of voluntary-sacrifice. Older termites(白蚁 ), who have lost their abilities of nesting and finding food, also explode onto their enemies.

Next, the researchers hope to find out the make-up of their yellow goo, how they use their explosion to take down larger attackers and so on.

23、Some Amazing Places around the World to Daydream

Here are some amazing places around the world to daydream about and look forward to visiting one day in the future.

Lord Howe Island, Australia

The island in the Tasman Sea lies between Australia and New Zealand. The number of tourists is not allowed to be over 400. It’s known for many birds, plants and marine life.

Lord Howe Island Group, the collective name for the mainland and the nearby islands, has been regarded a World Heritage Site of global national importance, thanks to the fact that its plants and animals are found nowhere else.

Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), Hawaii

Don’t try to attempt to reach Keahiakawelo, on Lanai Island. The Mars-like landscape gets its nickname from Alexander Ford, who visited in 1912 for an article and compared the place to the Garden of the Gods.

Hawaiians call Keahiakawelo “wahi pana”, which means legendary places which have cultural significance. As legend goes, the priest of neighboring island, a man named Lanikaula, was angry at the people of Lanai, so he lit a fire wishing ill will to the island’s people.

Balamku (Cave of the Jaguar God), Mexico

Re-discovered in 2018, the cave was discovered accidentally by archaeologists who were searching for a sacred well.

Located in the ancient Maya city, the cave was initially discovered in 1966 but was sealed up and forgotten about. The cave is so unexplored, that archaeologists are still mapping it out, and have only been into the first 450 meters of the cave.

Lençóis, Brazil

This protected area on Brazil’s north Atlantic coast is known for its vast desert landscape of towering white sand piles and seasonal rainwater lakes.

24、Have you ever placed your cup of coffee on top of your car, only to forget about it and drive away, your cup still steaming on top? Have you ever placed your baby's car seat, with your baby tied up inside it, on top of your car, only to forget that your little one is still up there — so you drive away?

19yearold Catalina Clouser put her 5weekold baby on top of her car in his car seat and drove away, apparently forgetting he was there, not even noticing when the seat fell off the car and landed in a crossroad, police said.

The baby was discovered in the roadway, uninjured and still tied up in his car seat, by neighbors. The police believed that Clouser was under the influence of something, most likely cannabis (大麻), which damaged her judgment.

The baby is now in the care of Child Protective Services.

I've forgotten a water bottle on top of my car.And when I was younger, I had an outdoor cat that liked to sunbathe on the top of my mother's van; and he once stayed up there while my mother began driving to the grocery store (he jumped off at the first stop sign).

Forgetting that your baby is on top of the car and driving away seems unbelievable! Not hearing the car seat fall off and continuing to drive — still forgetting — seems much crazier. He was 5 weeks old.How do you forget that? You don't — if you can't be responsible enough to keep your judgment entirely right at all appropriate times, you should not have children.

What's the craziest thing you placed on top of your car but forgot about, and then drove away?

1Where did the baby fall down from the running car?

A. Not far from her home.

B. Exactly where the car started.

C. In a grocery store.

D. In the Child Protective Service.

2What caused the accident?

A. The mother's carelessness.

B. The mother's inexperience.

C. Poor driving skill.

D. The effect of drug use.

3Hearing that the baby is left on the running car, the author may feel ________.

A. shocked   B. surprised

C. unbelievable   D. amazed

4In order to take good care of a child a mother should ________.

A. be responsible   B. be wealthy

C. take no drugs   D. not be forgetful

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My parents and I had just driven down the narrow mountain road from Marrakesh with all its sharp bends, and had finally arrived at Merzouga. Before us stretched the unending sand dunes (沙丘) that marked the beginning of the Sahara.

Our vehicle set off, quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn’t long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes, towering above us on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening at the same time.

Eventually, as the last rays of sunlight were falling on the sand, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire. I was starving and rushed to put a steak on the barbecue. We enjoyed two days in the camp with camel riding and campfire parties before we set off for Kenya.

A few days after our departure from the camp, we were very near to our rest camp in the Amboseli National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, rose up over the plains before us. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains, which were alive with the African wildlife. Giraffes, with their long necks, were pulling leaves from the highest branches. In the distance, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly over the plains.

The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother’s advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road.
