21、   With their school still closed and boredom coming in, a group of teenagers decided to do something meaningful.

Since April, students from Lake Highland Preparatory School in Florida, US, launched a free online tutoring service to help younger students with their schoolwork. Since then, Orlando Student Tutoring has lined up about 50 students, all of them children doing assignments from home.

Their services, using Zoom, are open to any student who is interested. They’ve received signups from across central Florida and, much to their surprise, requests from students in other states such as California and Pennsylvania. “We’ve been very happy to actually help,” said Jeffrey Zhou, 17. “I didn’t expect we’d get as many students as we did.”

The core group of tutors are members of Lake Highland’s robotics club. “We were all just so bored,” said Pavan Kanumalla, 17, who helped get the tutoring program running. Knowing the pandemic(流行病) had done real damage to many others, they were “feeling guilty about being bored in quarantine (隔离期),” he said. While not sure what to do at first, the group settled on tutoring and was soon designing a website and lining up other students to serve as tutors. “We’re just trying to have the biggest influence we can,” Kanumalla said.

Brooks Ellson, 17, also joined in as a tutor. He helped a third grader who needed help with math, saying it felt good “just to offer something, to give back.” And, he admitted, it was something to help fill the long days. The students plan to continue over the summer, offering fun, summer-camp type classes to younger kids.

1What does Orlando Student Tutoring do?

A.Look after younger children.

B.Help younger children with their schoolwork.

C.Teach younger children robotics.

D.Train younger children to do housework.

2Jeffrey Zhou felt surprised about the fact that ______.

A.many parents found it hard to teach their children

B.their service wasn’t welcomed in California

C.their program has interested many students from other states

D.many students across the country have signed up to be tutors

3Why did Pavan Kanumalla feel guilty?

A.He didn’t know what to do during the pandemic.

B.He couldn’t tutor during the pandemic.

C.He failed to continue the program into the summer.

D.He felt bored while others suffered damage from the pandemic.

4What did Brooks Ellson think about Orlando Student Tutoring?

A.It benefits children of all ages.

B.It should be more fun.

C.It allows him to kill time in a meaningful way.

D.It should offer more types of classes to satisfy parents.

22、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、CD选出最佳选项。

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joylove, marriage, birthalso bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的) .

My definition of happiness is the capacity for enjoyment. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. Its easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I dont think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing weve got to have. Were so self-conscious about our right to it that its making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things arent necessarily happier.

Happiness isnt about what happens to usits about how we see what happens to us. Its the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. Its not wishing for what we dont have, but enjoying what we do possess.
