21、 Friends are important to our lives. We talk to our friends about things which we can’t talk to our families about, and friends offer support when we need it and provide companionship.
It can be very easy to forget to communicate with your friends once you get married, have kids or have a job.Sometimes it’s hard enough to find time for your family and yourself, let alone your friends.
A friend is someone who was once a stranger, and after you made a special connection, you became friends with each other. How amazing it is!It doesn’t happen every day or with everyone you come across. So the fact that you were able to build a friendship with someone who was once a stranger to you is a great and wonderful thing. This is why it’s important to find time for your friends.
Finding time for friends can be as simple as calling them on the phone for a chat every now and then. This lets them know that they are in your thoughts and that they are important to you.Little gestures such as sending your friends some greeting cards, remembering their birthdays, and lending them a helping hand are also ways you can find time for your friends.
Whether you go to the movies, meet for dinner,go dancing,or have a party, spending time together is a great way to relax and reconnect you with each other.
Keep in mind that friends are a special and important part of our lives. So spend some time a day to include them in the balance of your life!

22、 NEW YORK—Women are now as likely to use the Internet as men--about two-thirds of both genders(性别)--yet a new study shows that gaps remain in what each sex does online.
American men who go online are more likely than women to check the weather, the news, sports, political and financial information, the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported Wednesday. They are also more likely to use the Internet to download music and software and to take a class.
Online women, meanwhile, are bigger users of e-mail, and they are also more likely to go online for religious information and support for health or personal problems.
“For men, it's just, 'Give me the facts',” said Deborah Fallows, who wrote the report based on six years of Pew surveys. “For women, it's 'Let's talk about this. Are you worried about this problem? ' It’s keeping in touch and connecting with people in a richer way.”
About two-thirds of the 6,403 adults surveyed by Pew during 2005 said they use the Internet. By gender, it was 68 per cent of the male respondents(调查对象), and 66 per cent of the female participants-a statistically insignificant difference given the study's margin of sampling error (误差幅度) of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
In 2002, by contrast, the gap was slightly larger: 61 per cent vs. 57 per cent.
The surveys find that for many activities, such as getting travel information or looking up a phone number, men and women are equally likely to use the Internet.
【1】Where can we read the passage?
A.A daily paper. B.A magazine. C.An advertisement. D.A survey.
【2】In which way do men use the Internet as much as women do?
A.Checking the sports information. B.Downloading music.
C.Taking a class. D.Getting travel information.

A.Men care about facts while women don't care about facts.
B.Men pay more attention to the result while women the process.
C.Men don't like to communicate with people while women like to connect with people.
D.Men are cold while women are enthusiastic.
23、 It has always been thought that alcohol causes people to put on weight because it contains a lot of sugar, but new research suggests a glass a day could form part of a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight, those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.
A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says, “Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain.” The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.
Boston University’s Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms(生物学机制) relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers.
The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and are not stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should be directed towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking into consideration drinking patterns and including the past tendency of participants to gain weight.
For now there is little evidence that consuming small to moderate amounts of alcohol on a regular basis increases one’s risk of becoming obese. What’s more, a study three years ago suggested that resveratrol (白藜芦醇), a compound present in grapes and red wine destroys fat cells.
【1】The underlined phrase “in moderation” in the first paragraph means “________”.
A.excitedly
B.carefully
C.frequently
D.properly

24、The Ways to Save Water
Water is one of the biggest commodities(商品) on Earth. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most misused and abused resources, making it a scarce resource in many parts of the world. In fact, according to the United Nations Population Fund, half of the world’s population lacks clean drinking water.【1】.
Turn the water off when not in use
This is one of the easiest ways to cut back on your water usage. There’s no need to keep the water running while you’re in the process of cleaning your teeth or wash your dishes.【2】. It may sound hard to believe, but you can save roughly 760 litres of water a month just by shutting the water off once you go about your business!
Take shorter showers
【3】. Get into the habit of taking showers that last 5 minutes or less whenever you can. Everyone loves a long, hot shower, but your shower head uses roughly 7.6 litres of water a minute. You'll save a lot of water over time if you stick with short rinses, and you'll be just as clean as you normally would after a long shower.
Wash by hand
You can further conserve (节约) water by washing dishes and clothing by hand. Fill the sink with water and splash the dishes to remove excess food and waste. Then give them a short wash and scrub instead of turning to the dishwasher.【4】. Fill a tub with sudsy (起泡沫的) water, give clothing a dunk, followed by a quick scrub and then hang to dry.
【5】
There are numerous water-saving alternatives to traditional appliances. Low-flow taps, low-flush toilets and flow-regulating shower heads are ideal. They help users save water, while having very little impact on these daily activities.
A.Do the same for clothing
B.Use water-efficient appliances
C.Limit the length of your showers and baths
D.Turn it back on only when you're ready to wash
E.Therefore, it only makes sense to save water wherever you can
F.Taking a shower uses much less water than filling up a bathtub
G.Everybody knows less than 1% of all the water on Earth can be used by people

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
A Welcome Gift
Dario and his mother loved their new apartment. The living room was large enough for their piano. That night, the two of them set side by side at the piano. They played jazz music to celebrate their new home. The loud music filled the room, making them feel very happy.
The next morning, however, their happiness disappeared. Someone had left a note under their door during the night. Complaining about the sound of the piano. Dario’s mother asked the building manager if he knew anything about it. But he said that they were all nice people and he couldn’t imagine any of them had done that. Later that morning, Dario suggested writing a letter to apologize.
“Maybe we could visit everyone in person.” his mother said.
“What if we invited them to come here for a party instead? Dario asked.
They both loved the idea. Over the next few days, they sent out invitations and prepared desserts for their guests. They decorated the apartment with streamers (彩带) and party lights.
Finally, the day of the party arrived. Some guests brought presents. Others brought flowers. One woman, Mrs. Gilbert, presented Dario’s mother with a book of piano music by Chopin.
“I heard you playing the other night,” she said. “The sounds woke me out of bed. I worried that you might play like this every night. So I wrote a short note. I hope you don’t think I disliked the playing.”
Dario’s mother smiled at Mrs. Gilbert. “I think maybe we owe you an apology.” she said.“I didn’t realize how late it was when we were playing. Maybe we should play some quieter music at night.
“You play, you play!” Mrs. Gilbert said. “I like what you play! Just not so loud at night.” She pointed to the book she had given them. “These songs are not so loud.”
“These songs are beautiful music.” Dario’s mother said. “We will be happy to play them in the evening.” “And we won’t play so loud or late!” Dario said. He was already looking forward to practising the new music. More than that, however, he was happy to see the big smile on his mother’s face. It gave him a feeling of warmth and made him feel that they were home at last.
