22、What would you think if someone suggested pulling down Big Ben to make way for a car park? It would be ridiculous, right? But when it comes to devastation (毁灭) of the natural world, we aren’t so easily shocked. But we should be...or we’ll be in a lot of trouble.
Nature is shrinking by the day. Ancient forests are destroyed. Wetlands are becoming dry. Woodland is disappearing. And all in the name of progress. This is bad in itself, but it’s devastating for biodiversity.
Biodiversity refers to the variety of plants, animals and other living things which are all inter-connected. The ecological services provided by biodiversity are vital to everyday life. The air we breathe is a product of photosynthesis (光合作用) by green plants. In fact, all life on earth exists thanks to the benefit of biodiversity. More than 90 percent of the calories consumed by people worldwide are produced from 80 plant species. And 30 percent of medicines are developed from plants and animals. Maintaining a wide diversity of species in each ecosystem is necessary to preserve all living things.
The loss of biodiversity could be devastating. “It is wrong to think that biodiversity can be reduced indefinitely without threatening humans,” said Harvard University biologist Edward O. Wilson, known as “the father of biodiversity”. He warned, “we are about to reach a critical point beyond which biodiversity loss will be unavoidable.”
But what can we do? The problem is that the concept of biodiversity is so vague. People might care about giant pandas, but it is much harder to excite them about the fate of tiny sea creatures which are being boiled to death in the cooling systems of power stations along coastlines. The Guardian newspaper is trying to help. It has started the Biodiversity 100 campaign to try to convince governments around the world to take action to deal with the widespread concerns about biodiversity. This includes persuading the UK government to create a series of marine reserves to reverse the decline in sea-life caused by industrial fishing, banning the fishing sharks by the Japanese fishermen and stopping the killing of dingoes in Australia, among many other things.
There is a lot to do. And we’d better get a move on if we don’t want to end up with a planet that can’t support life!
【1】What does the author want to tell us by the comparison in paragraph 1?
A.It is unreasonable to pull down Big Ben.
B.People take devastation of nature for granted.

【2】What can we infer from Edward O. Wilson’s words?
A.It doesn’t matter to reduce biodiversity.
B.People have done enough to preserve biodiversity.
C.The situation of biodiversity is very serious.
D.Biodiversity loss has become unavoidable.
【3】What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The UK government.
B.The concept of biodiversity.
C.The action to deal with problem.
D.The Guardian newspaper.
【4】Which of the following can be the suitable title for the text?
A.Biodiversity Battle
B.Biodiversity Loss

23、SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket company, launched the newly designed Crew Dragon capsule, carrying four astronauts to space on Nov. 16.The spacecraft successfully docked(对接) with the International Space Station ( ISS) on Nov. 17.
This is the first time that NASA has sent a crew into orbit entirely via a privately-owned spacecraft. “It's the start of a new era in which routine astronaut journeys to the low Earth orbit are being conducted by commercial providers,” NASA said. NASA's commercial manned program has taken a lot of risks. Whether the funding is sufficient in the long term and whether the companies have the capabilities to solve all the technical difficulties have been repeatedly questioned by the US Congress.
Before the launch, NASA had cooperated with SpaceX for more than a decade to build a manned spacecraft. Back in 2014, NASA was facing a vital decision—choosing the finalists to complete the task of developing alternative space shuttles. Eventually, it came down to Boeing and SpaceX. There was fierce competition between the two companies to complete the mission.
In December 2019, Boeing's manned spaceship, CST-100 Starliner, went through a test flight, but due to multiple errors, it failed to reach the ISS. The recent launch of the Crew Dragon capsule wasn't flawless, either. An air leak caused an unexpected drop in the capsule's pressure less than two hours before the launch, a NASA official said. Thanks to the technicians, the launch wasn't affected.
In the coming year, US actor Tom Cruise will start a commercial space journey on the Dragon capsule to film a movie at the ISS. At the same time, Boeing is catching up. The company will conduct another unmanned flight in 2021, and its first manned mission will take place sometime in 2022. “It very much follows the aviation(航空) era when airliners used to be government-run, and now of course they've been commercial for a number of decades,” said one of the Dragon capsule crew members.
【1】What is the significance of the successful launch of the Crew Dragon capsule?
A.It carried four astronauts into space.
B.It successfully docked with the International Space Station.
C.It sent ordinary people to space for the first time.
D.It marks the beginning of spaceflight being conducted by commercial providers.
【2】What's the main factor contributing to the successful launch of the Crew Dragon capsule?
A.SpaceX's long-term cooperation with NASA.
B.Boeing's failure in the test flight due to multiple errors.
C.SpaceX's sufficient funding.
D.The timely settlement of the technical difficulties.
【3】What does the underlined “It” refer to in Paragraph 5?
A.The Crew Dragon capsule was launched by SpaceX.
B.Commercial space exploration.
C.The competition between Boeing and SpaceX.
D.Commercial airliners.
【4】Which one can be the best title for this passage?
A.The manned spacecraft was launched
B.Spaceflight goes commercial
C.NASA faces lots of risks
D.SpaceX leads the way in spaceflight
24、As a working mother, my years passed without time for relaxing. The kids have been out of the nest, and I have been retired. Now I could take some time for ME!
【1】 As a lifelong list maker, I did my research. There were relaxation activities like meditation (冥想), exercise, socializing...... I was determined to find the one thing that truly filled my soul. And so I began my not-so-smooth journey to finding myself.
Meditation was the first to come and go. I never fully understood how to shut my mind off. I always felt like I was just waiting for it to end. Next, I tried “Teatime as Me Time.”【2】I imagined sitting across from a dear friend, drinking elegantly from delicate cups, but that is as far as it ever went. I have the fancy tea set (never used) and a shelf full of tea packages that I will never consume. Exercise is a highly recommended me-time activity. But for me, after a week or so of training, exercise time was killing me.【3】
Many other me-time experiments left me wanting less of them, not more. I felt like a failure at this me-time thing. I could spend the whole morning watching the big, fuzzy bees in my garden. In those moments, time stood still.【4】I discovered that I truly desired less emphasis on me altogether.
Maybe the experts had this me-time thing all wrong, and it had little to do with “me” or “time” as I was defining it. Perhaps we are too concerned with how we spend our time instead of enjoying the nothingness of simply being. Instead of viewing it as a hesitation between activities, we can shift our awareness into welcoming timelessness.【5】Maybe a better version of “me time” is simply “be time” ...... or, better yet, “bee time”!
A.Taking the focus off myself was a relief.
B.Of course, there were many possibilities.
C.At first, I was very enthusiastic about this.
D.So, I eventually crossed these ideas off my list.
E.Sitting around feeling special doesn't feel special to me.
F.I still value all those busy years but I know I should learn to relax.
G.Witnessing simple moments of nature re-centered my soul better than anything else.
