22、Folk-rocker Richie Havens, who died on April 22 at the age of 72, will be remembered for many things, among which his performance at Woodstock in 1969 made him into music history.
He wasn’t supposed to open the festival—he was scheduled to play fifth that day. Plans changed when the opening band, Sweetwater, got caught in traffic, Michael Lang, producer of the festival, said he chose Havens “because of his calm but powerful manner”. His performance went overtime because the next act was stuck in traffic, too. This led Richie Havens to create on the spot what became one of the most significant moments of the Woodstock Festival: his performance of “Freedom”.
The oldest of nine children, Havens was raised in the poor Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York. As a child, he dreamed of growing up to be a surgeon, but set off on a musical path as a teenager. Forming a music group in high school, he then landed in New York’s Greenwich Village folk clubs at 17. He soon stood out from the other young singers.
He recorded two albums on small labels (公司) before signing with Bob Dylan’s manager, Albert Grossman. He then joined a larger label and went on to tour for more than 40 years, making close to 30 albums.
Besides a good songwriter, Richie Havens was also an outstanding song interpreter. In many occasions he’d tell of spending three days learning Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”: “I wasn’t born to sing so I practiced the song over and over again in a stairwell.” One night, a man stopped him and said it was the best version he’d ever heard. Havens always ended the story by saying: “that’s how I first met Bob Dylan.”

23、Anthony Marc Robles is a college wrestler (摔跤选手) that many people recognize. This summer he was a featured guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Robles was honored on the 2011 ESPY Awards broadcast with not one but two awards: The Jimmy V Award for Perseverance — named for the late college basketball coach Jim Valvano, and given to a “member of the sporting world who has overcome great difficulties through physical perseverance and determination,” according to ESPN — and Best Male Athlete with a Disability.
Robles did all this, despite having been born without his right leg. Growing up in Mesa, Arizona, Robles was first introduced to wrestling in ninth grade. Despite having a difficult start — with more losses than wins in his first year — Robles set a 129-15 overall record at Mesa High School, winning two Arizona state titles.
Robles said, “I didn’t get into the sport for the attention. I wrestle because I love wrestling. Wrestling helped me to mature. I got so much self-confidence from the sport. I love the sport. But from here on my wrestling competition days are over, and I’ll be focusing on my next goal, which is to be an enthusiastic speaker. I’ll be around wrestling all my life. I love it so much.”
The 22-year-old Robles was even more calm when presented with his Jimmy V Award at the ESPY: “Every soul who comes to the earth with a leg or two at birth must wrestle his opponents (对手), knowing it’s not what is, it’s what can be that measures worth. Do it hard, just make it possible, and I’ll not complain about the pain I have experienced. My spirit is unconquerable (不可征服的). Fearless, I will face each opponent, for I know I am capable. Although there is blood, sweat and tears, I am unstoppable.”

A. he was defeated by other players many times
B. he showed his unusual ability in wrestling

24、McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Jack in the Box... These fast food companies have something in common. Can you spot it?
Besides all being fast food chains, they’re all red. And it’s not a coincidence. Color is one of the many strategies companies use to connect with customers. And if swearing (发誓) off fast food wasn’t hard enough, those colorful red logos might make it even harder to ignore.
Fast food companies all use the color red heavily in their logos. Why? The answer goes back thousands of years. The average human can see ten million colors, but red is special. It’s one of the first colors our ancient ancestors thought important enough to name. In early human languages, there were words for “black!” and “white” and “red” but not much else. In fact, blue didn’t show up until thousands of years later in 200 A. D.
As a result, we have a deeper connection to red than any other color and we react to it in certain ways that actually play to fast food companies’ advantage. For starters, researchers have found that red can bring a sense of urgency into our minds. In addition to that, it also has a born ability to whet our appetites (胃口). And when you pair those two together you’ve got the perfect recipe to attract hungry customers who want fast food, so that red logo isn’t just a welcoming sign, it’s an attraction to your brain.
In fact, red is one of the few colors today that cultures all over the world view positively. And it’s no wonder companies dedicate (奉献) so much thought to their logos. After all, we’re a visual creature. Despite having five senses, 80% of the information our brains process on a daily basis comes from our eyes. Colors are what give brands that impressive stamp of recognition.
【1】Why do fast food companies prefer the color red?
A.To highlight the importance of red in human history.
B.To help customers out in case of emergency.
C.To welcome and fascinate customers.
D.To make themselves special.
【2】The underlined word “whet” in Para. 4 probably means “________”.
