二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Few people have achieved fame for coming in last place. That is why Michael Edwards, or “Eddie the Eagle”, became a rather unexpected hero. Unlike most athletes, Eddie did not come to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games for a medal. He came simply to compete. In doing so, he realized his dream.

At first, Eddie tried to make the British national ski team but failed. Then he chose the riskiest event, ski jumping. No British skier had ever competed in that sport, but having no competitors meant that Eddie had a better chance of qualifying (取得资格) for the 1988 Olympic. Games. It also meant there was no support for him. Eddie had no coach, equipment, or financial support, but what he had was determination. Not afraid of what he lacked, Eddie set out to learn his chosen sport, training himself for nearly 2 years. And he managed to meet the qualification for Olympic ski jumping, and landed himself in the 1988 Olympic Games. Eddie was determined to compete, and while he came in last, he did manage to land his jumps, and he still holds the British record in that sport. Coming in last place actually made him the star of the Olympics and the true embodiment (化身) of the Olympic spirit.

Many of us may have experienced similar limitations during our own youth that prevented us from following our dreams. Eddie’s rejection (拒绝) from the British national ski team is a story that many of us can relate to. Rejection can be devastating, but we can struggle to find the courage to put ourselves back out there, or the creativity to find another way.

A.To become a hero.

B.To join the national ski team.

C.To take part in the Olympics.

D.To develop his ski jumping skills.

A.It was popular among British skiers.

B.It meant a better chance to win a medal.

C.He would get the support he needed in this event.

D.He would be more likely to be included in the Olympics.

【3】What made Eddie the star of the Olympics?

A.His caring little for fame.

B.His professional performance.

C.His breaking the British record.

D.His determination to follow his dream.

【4】What does the underlined word “devastating” mean in the last paragraph?

A.Unforgettable.

B.Disastrous.

C.Sudden.

D.Confusing.

22、Revealed to the world by the famous British explorer, Dr David Livingstone, in 1855, the Victoria Falls are one of Africas best-known natural wonders. They form a natural border between Zimbabwe (津巴布韦) and Zambia (赞比亚).

The falls are named after Queen Victoria by Livingstone. They were known to the native people in the 18th century as: "the smoke that thunders". The waterfall is formed as the two-kilometer-wide Zambezi River spills (溅) over the edge of its giant stone riverbed and falls into the gorge (山谷) below. At their highest point, the Victoria Falls drop a distance of 108m, almost twice as far as the Niagara Falls. As much as 546 million cubic meters of water per minute falls over the edge from that height.

Viewing the falls from the Zambian side means that visitors can follow a path that goes right up to the falls. The falls can also be viewed from the Boiling Pot, right in the depths of the gorge at the bottom of the falls. The 111-meter-high Victoria Falls Bridge, a railway crossing, is now a popular place for Bungee jumping. It can be crossed on foot for excellent views of the falls and the winding blue-green waters of the Zambezi River. It is also possible to see the falls from a plane.

The area around the falls is a major game-viewing place. The best time to view the Victoria Falls is between December and July, when the water level is the highest. Contact Addresses Tourist Centre, Livingstone, Zambia Tel: (03) 321 404E-mail: zntb@zamnet.zm Website: www.zambiatourism.com。

23、“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球)club.

I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.”

I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.

Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.

In that sense, I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I’d freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?

What does the underlined phrase“tug at the heartstrings”in paragraph 2 mean ?

A.Encourage team work.

B.Appeal to feeling.

C.Promote good deeds.

D.Provide advice.

24、   Have you heard of the term “tweenager”? It’s a slang word (個语) used in the UK to describe children between about ten and twelve years old.

Nowadays, more and more companies are beginning to create products and services for tweenagers. The Disney company sells music and film to tweenagers and their parents. You can get everything from branded lunchboxes and mobile phone covers, to monthly fan magazines and clothing. It’s all about sales, which suggests that tweenagers must have more money, freedom and influence upon their parents than they’re ever had before.

Most kids in the UK today get more pocket money than kids did a decade ago. Parents have more money to give their kids than previously, since parents are having fewer children. In addition, the divorce rate in the UK is continually rising and parents spend less time with their children than they used to, so many parents try to compensate by buying presents for their children. It’s a bad habit for both parents and kids to get into, but parents are under constant pressure from commercial marketing and the requests of their children.

UK kids today are very media-and-computer literate (受过教育的). A lot of kids have a TV, if not a computer, in their bedrooms. They have access to much more information about life and the world. They may have experienced a lot in life as well, since 24% of UK kids live in single parent families, so people now say that “kids are getting older younger”. With such maturity (成熟) at such a young age, it’s no wonder tweenagers are able to influence their parents and have more freedom than previous generations.

UK tweenagers never used to be worried about spending money on clothes. That’s changed. Now, they are much more fashion aware and concerned about their image. Many tweenagers outgrow the bright colours and fashions of their tweenage years and go for something darker and more rebellious (反抗的).

Surely none of the above is a good thing. The UK government is certainly concerned, and for that reason has strict laws preventing companies from definitely marketing their products and services at children.

1Why are more products and services created for tweenagers?

A.Because children education is becoming more important.

B.Because they are more affordable to tweenagers.

C.Because it is better to study music from an early age.

D.Because more companies are creating products and services.

2What does the underlined word “compensate” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Keep company. B.Reward. C.Make up. D.Motivate.

3How do UK tweenagers today differ from previous generations?

A.They have less effect on their parents.

B.They are more worried about their careers.

C.They have fewer life experiences.

D.They know more about the world.

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To teach a new word “tweenager”.

B.To introduce a new phenomenon (现象).

C.To urge parents to care about their kids.

D.To blame today’s young people.
