二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The invention of the 1D barcodes revolutionized supermarkets and general market management. But shortly after their introduction, their disadvantages were clear. There was an instant demand to be able to encode (编码) more than 20 alphanumeric characters (字符) that the traditional barcodes could hold.

Denso Wave, a Japanese company, at the time, was in the business of manufacturing 1D barcode scanners. Listening to feedback from users of the 1D barcode scanners they were selling, they put together a development team to come up with a solution.

One of the key targets was to ensure that no matter what barcode they designed, it can be scanned very fast. It took the team nearly 18 months, and eventually they came up with a barcode that could hold up to 7,000 alphanumerical characters and could be scanned up to 10 times faster than any other code at the time. In 1994, the QR Code was born.

The QR Code quickly spread outside of Japan and were approved for many standards globally. But that wasn’t the end of the development of the QR Code. After all, nothing is perfect at its beginning and people soon began to present more requirements to Denso Wave. The variations (变体) of the QR Code were soon developed.

One of the biggest reasons why the QR Code has been able to be used widely is that Denso Wave made the decision to make the QR Code publicly available. This means anyone can use it without paying any fees. Denso Wave do hold a patent for the QR Code, but have declared that they have no intention to exercise it.

It wasn’t until 2002 that the first smartphones came to market with the QR Code scanner, and this really accelerated the technology. Once widespread on phones, almost anyone can read these codes and doesn’t require expensive hardware to do so. It is believed that Nokia is the first to bring this technology to a mobile device.

【1】What is the disadvantage of the 1D barcodes?

A.The information they store is too little.

B.They sometimes encoded wrong characters.

D.People have fewer demands for its variations.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.An introduction of the QR Code.

B.The disadvantages of the 1D barcodes.

C.A famous development team.

D.The reasons for developing the QR Code.

22、   For most of us, swinging (摆动) 360 degrees around the spindle () of a swing set is a distant childhood dream, but for some people in Estonia, it’s what they never grow out of. Not only do they still love struggling against gravity (重力), but they actually have created a competitive sport around their favorite entertainment. That sport is known as “kiiking”.

Swings are deep in Estonian culture, and you can still find various types of swings in villages and towns all around the country. They are used by children and adults alike, either for simple fun, or as a way for communities to bond during celebrations. So maybe it doesn’t come as a big surprise that Estonia has an extreme sport based on swinging. Some people see it as dull, others as pointless, but to those who practice it, kiiking is the coolest thing in the world.

The rules of kiiking are pretty simple. Competitors start swinging at a certain height, and if they can complete a full circuit () around the spindle, they can try to do the same after the swing has been raised a little, and so on. Those who fail to do a full spindle are left with the result of their last successful try.

Watching kiiking videos might give you the impression that it’s an easy sport, but Laansalu, who has been practicing it since she was 8 years old, says it requires both great physical strength-strong legs and strong arms-and technique-knowing when to stand or sit in the swing chair, when to push yourself over the spindle of the swing and how to avoid injury.

Small groups of kiikers have been appearing in other countries, including the United States, but now it is still considered as an Estonian sport. There are no international kiiking competitions yet, but Estonia has several national kiiking events throughout the year.

1What can we know about kiiking?

A.It is very easy and safe.

B.It is intended for children.

C.It is an international sport.

D.It is developed from swinging.

2What should competitors pay attention to in kiiking according to the text?

A.The strength of the swing.

B.The way to push themselves.

C.The time to stand or sit on the swing.

D.The position where they end the sport.

3What decides the success in kiiking?

A.The number of circuits he completes.

B.The height where he completes a full circuit.

C.How long it takes to complete a full circuit.

D.How long he performs on the swing.

23、In 2020, American National Youth Tobacco Survey found that more than 3.6 millon youth had used e-cigarettes. That means e-cigarette use has gone beyond traditional cigarette use in young people.

There are some reasons for that. Many young people are curious to try out some new flavors (味道) in e-cigarettes, like chocolate, lemon and strawberry. In fact, research has shown that the interesting flavors are what lead kids to experiment with e-cigarettes in the first place. Besides, when seeing some friends using them, the youth would probably have a try, too, believing that e-cigarettes are much cooler than traditional cigarettes. Last, they falsely believe me-cigarettes are harmless to their health since no smelly gases are produced in the process.

Many young users do not realize e-cigarettes have dangerously high levels of nicotine (尼古丁), sometimes as much as that of an entire pack of cigarettes, so that they are pretty harmful to their health and highly addictive. There has been a rise of stories in the media about kids who use e-cigarettes developing serious breathing problems. And nicotine may harm their developing brain, as brain development continues through about age 25. Also, nicotine can affect their ability to concentrate, learn and exercise.

Another huge risk is the fact that e-cigarettes blow up, thus causing serious injuries. According to a 2019 study from the U.S. Fire Department, e-cigarettes caused serious injuries to users including breaking their jaws (下巴 ) or knocking out their teeth. Meanwhile, another study found that injuries from e-cigarette use resulted in nearly 2,000 emergency room visits between 2018and 2020.

In the U.S, it is now illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy e-cigarettes. What's more, the government now requires e-cigarettes to contain a warning about the addictiveness of nicotine.

【1】What is the major reason why teenagers begin to smoke e-cigarettes?

A.They want to copy what their friends have done.

B.They think using e-cigarettes makes them look cooler.

C.They believe e-cigarettes are much safer than cigarettes.

D.They are curious about the inviting flavors of e-cigarettes.

【2】According to the passage, what may result in the concentration problem in young people?

A.Nicotine in e-cigarettes.

B.Slow brain development.

C.Lack of physical exercise.

D.Serious breathing problems.

【3】Why does the author mention the two studies in Paragraph 4?

A.To prove his opinion.

B.To compare different results.

C.To give detailed information.

D.To explain research methods.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.E-cigarettes are rather harmful to young people.

B.Many young people get addicted to e-cigarettes.

C.People under 21 are forbidden to use e-cigarettes.

D.Risk awareness of e-cigarette smoking should be raised.

24、   Can a fish be depressed (沮丧)? This question has been floating around my head ever since I spent a night in a hotel across from a sad-looking fish. His name was Bruce Lee,according to a sign beneath his little bowl.

The pleasant woman at the front desk promised to me that he was well taken care of. Did I simply classify his sleep into a sign of mental pain? When I sought answers from scientists,I assumed that they would find the question ridiculous. But they did not. Not at all.

Dr. Pittman likes working with fish because they are so obvious about their depression. He can reliably test the effectiveness of anti-depressants (抗抑郁剂)with something called the “novel tank test.“ A fish gets dropped in a new tank. If after five minutes it is hanging  out in the lower half,it’s depressed. If it’s swimming up top —its usual tendency when exploring a new environment — then it’s not. The severeness of the depression,he says, can be measured by quantity of time at the top and the bottom, all of which seemed to confirm my doubts about Bruce Lee.

“ One of the things we’re finding is  that fish are naturally curious and seek new things out,” said Dr. Pittman. In other words, your goldfish is probably bored. To help avoid depression,he urges introducing new objects  to the tank or switching up the location of items.

The last time a guest posted Bruce Lee to Instagram he was looking good and lively. Perhaps that new green leaf in his bowl had provided the enrichment he wished.

【1】How did the author get the name of the fish in the hotel?

A.From the attached caption.

B.From a travel guide.

C.From a science fiction.

D.From a hotel brochure .

【2】What did the scientists think of the author’s assumption about Bruce Lee?

A.Ridiculous.

B.Reasonable.

C.Indifferent.

D.Contradictory.

【3】In what situation did Bruce Lee look positive?

A.When fed with some fresh food.

B.When removed from the bowl.

C.When given new objects he was eager for.

D.When provided with some fish in his bowl.

【4】What does the underlined word “items” in the fourth paragraph refer to?

A.Objects .

B.Tanks .

C.Fishes.

D.Foods.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My six-year-old boy Jonathan broke a limb of my azalea (杜鹃花) bush and asked me, “Can I take this to school today, mom”? With a wave of my hand, I sent him off. And then I turned my back so he couldn’t see the tears in my eyes.

I was in low spirits all day, washing and drying clothes, and thinking how love had disappeared from my life. As hanging up the last of my husband’s shirts, I looked at the clock—4:30. Jonathan’s class ended at 3:15. It was late and I hurriedly drove to the school.

I was out of breath by the time I knocked on the teacher’s door. I peered through the glass. She opened the door and let me in.

“I want to talk to you about Jonathan,” she said. I prepared myself for the worst. Nothing would have surprised me. “Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today?” she asked. I nodded, thinking about my favorite bush and trying to hide the hurt in my eyes.

“Let me tell you what happened yesterday,” the teacher continued. “See that little girl?” I saw a bright-eyed child laugh and point to a colorful picture taped to the wall. “Well, yesterday she was almost crazy. Her mother and father are going through a divorce. She told me she didn’t want to live. She wished she could die. I did all I could to comfort her, but it only seemed to make matters worse.”

“Today I watched your son walk to that child and hand her some pretty pink flowers, whispering something.”
