22、   It was not easy to buy a delicious pineapple more than 10 years ago. The fruits that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1966, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves.

The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and-miss pineapples we had known. In no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly becoming the world’s best-selling pineapple variety.

In nutrition (营养) it was all good news too. This nice tasting pineapple contained four times more vitamin C than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases. People were eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a fixture in the shopping basket of the healthy eater.

Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple, Del Monte tried to keep market to itself. But other fruit companies developed similar pineapples. Del Monte turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies argued successfully that Del Monte’s attempts to keep the golden pineapple for itself were just a way to knock them out of the market.

1We learn from the text that the new type of pineapple is __________.

A.good-looking outside and soft inside B.green outside and sweet inside

C.a little soft outside and sweet inside D.yellowy-gold outside and hard inside

2Why was the new type of pineapple selling well?

3The underlined word “fixture” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to something _________.

A.that is always present B.that people don’t like eating

4We learn from the last paragraph that Del Monte _________.

A.succeeded in keeping the pineapple for itself

B.slowed other companies to develop pineapples

C.planned to help the other companies

D.tried hard to control the pineapple market

23、Mick lives in a town. He is known as “the bike man”. Over the past five years, Mick has built hundreds of bicycles for needy kids.

One day five years ago, a 13-year-old boy with a broken bike walked by Mick’s house. “I was working in my garage, and he asked if I could fix it,” says Mick, now 53.

The boy left his bike, which had a broken bracket (支架), with Mick, who asked friends on Facebook if they had the missing part. The town’s former police chief saw the post and donated two used bicycles. Mick took parts from each to make a new set of wheels for the boy.

Soon after, Mick, repaired a bike for the boy’s brother and assembled one for his sister. Word spread, and within the year, he had fixed up dozens of bikes for local kids whose parents couldn’t afford to buy new ones.

“People were dropping off bikes day and night,” says Mick, “It’s great that I can reuse them for kids who need one.” Mick stores the bikes and bike parts in his garage. “I take off the good tires or the handlebars or the seat and use them,” he says.

So far, the bike man has repaired hundreds of cycles and given away nearly 700 newly constructed bikes. They’re free, but the kids must agree to two things: They’ve got to mind whoever’s raising them, and they’ve got to try in school. If a kid’s grades are low, Mick requires a teacher’s note, saying “You’re doing your best,” Mick says.

Mick also hopes the bikes will get kids away from television and mobile screens, “When I was growing up, we all rode our bikes,” he says, “Hopefully these kids can get some exercise.”

【1】What is the purpose of Mick by rebuilding bikes for kids for free?

A.To give a hand to the needy.
