22、Nowadays with the popularity of the Internet many people complain of the difficulty of finding their “true” identity in amongst all the conflicting messages and demands of the world around them.
This idea, that , somewhere deep down, is the “real” us, is as old as philosophy itself. It involves things like our values, our sense of purpose, the beliefs that make us who we are. We often ask the question, “Are you living the life you want to be living , or the life other people want you to live?”
The Internet has brought the opinions of others to our own lives as never before, and it is threatening our ability to understand who we really are.
To discover our true selves, maybe it’s time to disconnect. Not forever, that would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, but for significant periods of our days, weeks, or months. Because, with disconnection comes quiet and with quiet comes the ability to reflect.
In researching my World Service documentary Default World, I spoke to a lot of people about their experience of technology. Many said they were trying to spend less time online, taking a break from Facebook, connecting only when they needed to. And they spoke with pleasure of rediscovering the physical world around them and the world of human-to-human communication. I think this is encouraging.
We are still learning how to be on the Internet, what effect this huge network of computers---a network we have built ourselves---has on our sense of self. We are at the moment, as Thoreau said of people in the industrial revolution, “tools of our tools”.
Disconnecting gives us a chance to turn the tables to see the Internet not as something that overwhelms(使不知所措)us but as a tool, which we use when we need it. Only then can we really understand who we are and what we can give the world. And that, deep down, is the real toot of our identity.
【1】What makes it difficult for us find the “real” us?
A. The fast pace of our modem life.
B. The flood of online messages.

23、In recent years, scientists have discovered that mushrooms are much more than just a tasty addition to your favorite dish. In fact, they are the “Internet of trees” — a vast network of underground mycorrhizal (菌根的) fungi (真菌) that connects trees and other plants in a similar way to how the Internet connects people.
The mycorrhizal network is made up of hyphae (菌丝),which connect the roots of different plants and trees. These hyphae act like an underground internet, allowing plants to exchange nutrients, water, and even hormones (激素). For example, if one tree is under stress due to drought or disease, it can send out hormones to warn other nearby trees of the danger. The other trees can then prepare themselves for the coming threat.
Human beings can help trees and mushrooms by practicing “mycorestoration” in regenerative projects. With the Global Tree Initiative working towards reforestation and preserving natural habitats, it is important to share how mycorestoration can supply innovative ways to mitigate the impact of human activities.
Fungi are natural decomposers (分解器) that break down complex organic matter, like dead trees, into simpler compounds that can be absorbed by plants. This decomposition process is crucial for the health of our forests, as it contributes to nutrient cycling, soil formation, and carbon sequestration. By introducing native fungi species into areas where deforestation has occurred, we can help regenerate soil and support the growth of new trees. Fungi form symbiotic (共生的) relationships with tree roots, improving their ability to absorb water and nutrients. This increased access to resources accelerates tree growth and improves their resilience to stress, such as drought or disease.
Fostering sustainable communities through mycorestoration can be conducted through global partnerships that promote ecology within Ecovillage Design Education. The Global Ecovillage Network’s presence in five continents and in over 8,000 communities around the planet, helps the regenerative approach to community building and preservation of existing forests. By promoting sustainable land management practices and reducing our reliance on extractive industries, ecovillages can help prevent deforestation and protect the habitats of countless plant and animal species.
【1】The “Internet of trees” can function as ________.
A.A linker of hormones.

D.A destroyer of nutrients.

C.They accelerate the process of carbon sequestration.
D.They help with soil regeneration and tree growth.
【4】What can be achieved through the Global Ecovillage Network?

B.Preserving existing forests.
C.Building independent communities.
D.Reducing reliance on industries.
24、 Selah Thompson shares her love of reading and even creates her own stories.
Books have the power to transport you to another place and make you feel like you are part of the story. A love of reading should be developed at a young age so children can benefit a lot. That’s a gift 8-year-old Selah Thompson from Atlanta, Georgia, received from her parents and wants to pass on to other children.
When Selah was five, she came home from her first day at kindergarten and told her parents that a lot of her new friends at school didn’t know their ABCs, which really bothered Selah and she wanted to do something about it.
She then asked her parents to give away 20 hundred thousand books. Her parents began to do research and found that there is a huge amount of illiteracy (文盲) in America and that two-thirds of students who cannot read skillfully by the end of the fourth grade will end up in prison or on welfare.
After understanding the need for books and establishing a love for reading, Selah’s parents were on board. In 2018, they created the nonprofit Empowered Readers Literacy Project. This organization promotes families to create solid reading habits so children see books as something positive.
More than 2,400 kids and their parents participated in the reading activities in Atlanta in the first year. They also run an adventure time readers club and the 500 books project to get books into children’s hands.
Over the past two years, the literacy project has donated 8,000 books, including Selah’s own series. Although her goal of “20 hundred thousand books” is still quite far, Selah is on the right track. She is ambitious and a true role model for children and adults. Hopefully her love for books is contagious and children will be more willing to read when the main character actually looks like them.
