21、Rise of the robots
The word “robot” was coined in 1920 by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, who imagined artificial, fully functional servants. For most of their history, however, robots have been silent, inelegant devices sitting out of sight in factories.
Things are starting to change, however. Robots have benefited from rapid innovations in smartphones, which brought cameras, sensors and wireless communications. 【1】Robots are leaving industrial settings for everyday life and, will work in supermarkets, social care and much more.
【2】Many industries are facing a shortage of labour in such a pandemic world. Robots are now indispensable, picking items off shelves and helping people pack a rising numbers of boxes. They are even beginning to deliver goods or food right to people’s doors.【3】
And yet many people fear that robots will destroy jobs.【4】The evidence suggests robots will be disruptive but ultimately beneficial for labour markets. A Yale University study that looked at Japanese manufacturing between 1978 and 2017 found that an increase of one robot unit per 1, 000 workers boosted a company’s employment by 2.2%.
For all that, the march of the robots will bring big changes to workplaces.【5】But that need not be the disaster many fear. One example of “bad automation” is self-service checkouts in supermarkets. Checkout staff who retrain to help customers pick items may well find that dealing with people in need is more rewarding than spending all day scanning barcodes in of lasers.
The potential gains from the robot revolution are huge. In Capek’s play, the robots revolt against their human masters and cause mass unemployment and worse. The beginnings of the worlds real robots have not matched Capek’s satire (讽刺). There is no reason to think that their future needs to either.
A.They could not be coming at a better time.
B.The skills and firms that are rewarded will shift, too.
C.The use of advanced technologies lead to increases in hiring.
D.In fact, concerns about mass unemployment are overblown.
E.Firms should recognize the value of retraining and lifelong learning.
F.Having more robots to boost productivity would be a good thing.
G.Recent advances in machine learning have equipped them to make wiser decisions.
22、Kieran Moise, 18, started growing out his hair in the eighth grade, after losing a friend to brain cancer. He had seen people donate their hair to children who had lost theirs during medical treatment and wanted to do same.
“Kieran has always been known for his hair. It was a big part of his personality and who he was,” said his mother, Kelly Moise. “But he has always been the most compassionate and caring person. Since he was 6 years old, he somehow had the mindset of raising money and giving it to people who need it, and that never changed.”
In May, Moise graduated from high school with an impressive 19-inch Afro (非洲发式). But with him set to enter the U.S. Air Force Academy, it was finally time for the big cut.
To maximize his impact, Moise organized a live event at a local brewery in Huntsville and an online fundraising campaign called “Kieran’s Curls for Cancer”, where he aimed to raise $1,000 per inch cut.
On May 29, nearly 100 people attended the event, where they watched Moise get his hair braided and snipped off. His hair was donated to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization in Michigan that makes free wigs for kids and young adults facing medically related hair loss.
By the end of the day, the event raised $20,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has continued to raise money online. As of Saturday, it was more than $39,000.
“Charitable giving comes in many forms, from direct acts of kindness to impactful public statements that motivate others to come together to support a cause,” Richard C. Shadyac Jr., President and CEO for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, told CNN, “Kieran’s simple act of kindness exemplifies (例证) the power of younger generations and is something to celebrate, a selfless decision that will make a direct impact on the lives of the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and children everywhere for years to come.”
【1】What contributed to Kieran Moise’s starting growing out his hair?
A.His high-quality fine hair.
B.The death of one of his friends.
C.His witness of children’s pain
D.The encouragement from his mother
【2】Why does Kieran Moise’s mother mention his childhood?

23、 As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)"
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
【1】What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.
B. The first group didn’t know where the information is.
C. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
D. The second group had a better memory of the information.
【2】In transactive memory, people ______.
A. know how to access huge amounts of information later.
B. learn how to organize small amounts of information.
C. organize huge quantities of information like a computer.
D. bear huge quantities of information in mind.
【3】What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?
A. We are becoming more intelligent.
B. We are using memory differently.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.
24、Taking pressure off sports competitions
Sports are a great way to have fun and stay active. Competitions can make sports more exciting. But because somebody wins and somebody loses competitions can also make kids be under pressure. A little pressure can be OK. But too much pressure is bad news. 【1】
What is a competition?
There are different kinds of competition in sports. 【2】 For example, a swimmer might compete individually, but the person's score may also contribute to a teams score. What all sports competitions have in common is that all of the competitors want to win. 【3】
Why do I feel under pressure?
Do you ever have “butterflies” in your stomach? It's that nervous feeling some people get when starting to attend a new school or preparing for a big soccer match. Believe it or not, the best player on your team gets nervous before a big game. 【4】 Feeling a little excited or nervous is OK, though. This helps your body and mind get ready to compete. But if you're getting so nervous that you aren't having much fun, it's time to figure out why.
How can I deal with pressure?
When you're competing in sports, you need a lot of energy. 【5】 Be sure to go to bed on time. And don't forget to eat well on game day. Try to attend all of your team's practices. By practicing, you'll improve your playing skills. The more prepared you are, the better you'll feel and the more fun you'll have.
A.Read on to learn more about sport pressure.
B.What if you want to give up?
C.But usually only one person or team does.
D.It takes a lot of work to become skilled at a sport.
E.Even professional players feel nervous sometimes!

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Nothing Extraordinary
It was a Saturday. The mall was packed with people. I was with my mom.
Mom is short, skinny. It is easy to overlook her in a crowd simply because she is nothing extraordinary to see.
On that day we went for another window shopping in a mall next to our apartment, peeking at window boutiques(时装店)in fleeting glances because we both knew we wouldn’t be buying much, like always.
I remember I was looking up at the people we passed as we walked—at first indifferently, but then more attentively.
Ladies wore bright, delicate clothing and five-inch heels that clicked importantly on the floor. Men stepped by smelling of sharp perfumes. An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. I tried to push it out, but once it took root, it refused to be rid of and tossed away: I was ashamed of my mother.
We were in a high-class neighborhood, I knew that. We lived in a small, overpriced apartment building that Mom chose to move to because she knew the schools were good.
We were in a high-class neighborhood, but as I examined the passers-by and then turned accusing eyes on Mom, I realized for the first time that we didn’t belong there.
I could see the heavy lines around Mom’s eyes and mouth, carved deep into her skin without luxurious creams to ease them away. She wore cheap, ragged clothes with the seams tom, shoes with the soles(鞋底)worn down. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make ends meet and her hair was too gray for her age.
My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment she stood out because she was just so plain.
I don’t want to be seen with her, so I hurried away to the bathroom. When I finally made my way out with reluctant steps, Mom wasn’t in sight. I had to search door to door, only to find Mom was standing in the middle of a high-end store, holding a sweater that looked much too expensive.
