二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY?

This morning, I saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”. In the article, a lot of people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Hence, we should cease accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologized for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was not enough. Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.

On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Amish, a group of Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish’s quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.

On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programs give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media.

Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. Nevertheless, I will always look on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it.

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.A person died in an accident while driving his brand-new car.

B.The relatives of the victim would never accept the apology.

C.Many people took a negative attitude to this new technology.

D.The company was very concerned about the future of this new technology.

2What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the Amish in the second paragraph?

A.To persuade us to follow their natural living style.

B.To tell us the Amish prefer a harmonious and peaceful life.

C.To prove people can still live better without new technology.

D.To advocate a simple life with family and community by hard work.

3According to the third paragraph, which of the following benefits is not talked about?

A.Monitoring people’s physical health.

B.Providing chances in life more easily.

C.Predicting the earthquake and tsunami.

D.Helping people contact each other easily.

4Why did the author decide to write about the passage?

A.To praise the advantages of new technology.

B.To show his supportive idea of new technology.

C.To criticize the disadvantages of new technology.

D.To arouse people’s concern about new technology.

22、Fish come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colors. They first appeared in the oceans of the earth about 500 million years ago. Today there are tens of thousands of different kinds of fish and new species are discovered every year.

Where fish live

【1】 They preferably live in areas where warm and cold currents meet. And about 40% of fish species are in fresh water. Some of them live in the clear water of rivers while others prefer muddy pond water. A few types of fish can swim in both salt and fresh water.

Senses

Fish have organs that tell them what is happening in the water around them. They can see left and right at the same time. They not only can hear sounds in the water but can also sense sounds that happen on the surface.【2】

Bodies of fish

Fish have no neck. The head and the body are combined. Most fish are shaped like cigars so that they can travel very quickly. Fish are cold-blooded.【3】The skin of most fish is made out of a special slippery substance. Fish breathe oxygen from the water they live in.

【4】Fish were among the first animals hunted by primitive human beings. Millions of people all over the world depend on fish as a main form of nutrition. In many coastal countries, such as Japan or Norway, people depend on fishing to make a living.【5】 They eat other sea animals and are eaten by other sea creatures, thus keeping up the balance of nature.

23、I had five hours in the company of First Great Western(FGW) last weekend, on a train full of passengers, all the way from Cornwall to London. I got to know some of my fellow passengers rather well. Not through talking to them, you understand.

There was the youth who was explaining to his friend exactly how he enjoyed a party with his friends last night. Opposite him was a young woman who was very excited to be going to Lanzarote for her summer holiday. And then there was the man who I took to be a car mechanic(汽车修理工); so detailed and technical was his conversation about a second-hand Audi. Everyone had a different, noisy ringtone, and none of the mobile phone conversations I was forced to hear was interesting.

By the end of the journey, I was silently complaining about the modern world, and feeling mad with FGW who, at the very moment when our carriage fell silent, would make an announcement about the buffet car (a carriage where food and drinks are sold) either opening or closing.

FGW seems to be campaigning against peace and quietness, having removed quiet carriage spaces where passengers were requested not to use mobiles so that their trains could carry more passengers. How so? I cannot understand why FGW takes no notice of passengers like me, who have suffered a lot from hearing endless telephone conversations. I have no interest in the smallest details of others lives. Making people listen to boring mobile phone conversations should be regarded as a rude act.

Every train carriage should, in theory, be quiet. Why cant that be the standard? It is possible to change public custom and practice. It was not so long ago that sidewalks were littered with dog waste:now its a general rule that dog owners clean it up after their pets. And once we restore peace and quietness to trains, we can then move on and stop people bringing fast food onto them, too.

【1】How did the author get to know the three passengers?

A.From their phone conversations.

B.Through introductions.

C.In informal conversations.

D.By using a mobile phone.

【2】At the end of the journey, the author ______.

A.became satisfied with FGWs service

B.felt uneasy about the silence

C.was filled with anger

D.went to the buffet car

【3】What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?

A.He is in support of the decision of FGW.

B.He believes FGW will have more passengers.

C.He dislikes hearing others phone conversations.

D.He thinks its rude to listen to others conversations.

【4】The author mentioned the rule of cleaning up dog mess to show ____.

A.dog mess has become a serious problem

B.quiet carriages can become the standard

C.noise in carriages is as troubling as dog mess

D.changing public custom and practice is difficult

24、Nearly everyone has bad habits. That's because, try as we might, bad habits are hard to break. On the other side, good habits, such as eating more healthfully or exercising regularly, never seem to stick. As a result, most people throw up their hands and surrender

But now a new book,Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives by best-selling author Gretchen Rubin, offers some useful solutions.

Rubin, who became interested in habits during her research on happiness, which resulted in two popular books,The Happiness Project (2009) and Happier at Home (2012),found that our inability to master unwanted behaviors was a major downer (令人沮丧的因素).So,after guiding millions of readers down the path of true contentedness,Rubin turned her investigative skills toward habits.

Her most important find? Change is possible if we do some soul searching and identify how we respond to expectations. And,just about everybody falls  into  one  of  four  personality  categories:Questioners,Obligers,Rebels and Upholders.

Rubin believes herself to be a classic Upholder, someone who forms habits relatively easily because she responds well to both other people's deadlines and her own.As to the other types,Questioners will only form a habit if it makes sense to them; Obligers work hard to meet other people's expectations but often let themselves down. And Rebels resent (反感) habits.

“Think about the habit that you want to form and then think: “What's everything I could do to set myself up for success?” says Rubin. For example,if you want to exercise more and you're an Obliger, call your friend who lives across the street and meet at 6:30 every morning for a walk.

One common pitfall (陷阱),says Rubin, especially when it comes to changing your diet,is lack of clarity (清楚).“You can't make a habit out of eating more healthfully,” she says.Instead, your habit should be something like: “I'm going to pack a lunch every day and bring it to work instead of eating out.”

As for exercise,Rubin recommends a strategy called pairing—coupling two activities, one that you need or want to do and one that you don't particularly want to do.Rubin, for example, only allows herself to read magazines while on fitness equipment at the gym.

1What does the underlined word “surrender” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. Catch up.   B. Settle down.

C. Calm down   D. Give up.

2Why did Rubin start to study habits?

A. She used to suffer from some bad habits.

B. Good habits make people successful.
