二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race, and possibly all advanced life forms on the planet, could be wiped out by nuclear missiles. Today, however, environmental problems have taken over as the greatest risk to life on Earth. Scientists are thinking of ways to lower this risk, such as replacing coal and oil with forms of renewable energy. But they are also preparing for the worst: what can we do if the terrifying scenes in films such as The Day After Tomorrow happen in real life? What is our plan B for Earth?

One option is to explore other planets to see if we could live on them. The most likely choice is Mars, which is relatively close to Earth and has an environment less hostile than that of other planets. Mars has fascinated people since ancient times, and today our interest in Martian exploration is greater than ever before. Besides, more governments are making efforts to educate the public on the Red Planet.

There is no doubt that humankind is drawn towards Mars. However, sending people there will require all the skill, courage and intelligence. While the Moon can be reached within days, it would take months to reach Mars, travelling through dangerous solar radiation. And even if the first settlers do reach Mars safely, they may not be able to return to Earth — ever. Staying alive will be a daily challenge, but as proved by the Biosphere 2 experiment, not impossible. As early as the 1980s, scientists were building Biosphere 2 in the Arizona desert, consisting of a closed space in which people, animals and plants could live together. Although the two-year experiment was not a success, it did provide us with a better understanding of how humans might be able to live on another planet.

For now, human settlement of Mars is still decades away. Until we are finally able to live on another planet, we need to take much better care of our own. Right now, it's the only one we have!

1What was the biggest threat to humans in the 1960s and 1970s?

A.Human race themselves. B.All advanced life forms.

C.Nuclear missiles. D.Environmental problems.

2Why is Mars so attractive to scientists?

A.It's closest to the earth.

B.It has relatively appropriate living conditions.

C.It has drawn the public's attention in recent years.

D.It has a more hostile environment.

3What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Humans have visited Mars.

B.The Biosphere 2 experiment proved to be valueless.

C.Humans will have to go and live on another planet.

D.Our Plan A includes developing renewable energy resources.

4From which magazine would the passage probably be taken?

A.The Traveler. B.Environmental Concerns.

C.All About Space. D.Biology for Fun,

22、Werewolves (狼人) aren’t the only creatures affected by the moon’s cycles (周期) . A full moon also affects people’s sleep more or less, reports a Swiss team of scientists. Even people who sleep in a lab without windows could reduce their sleeping time a little once a month.

To test the moon’s influence, 33 adults of both sexes and ages of many kinds spent several nights in a sleep lab. As they slept, researchers recorded their brain activity, eye movements and hormone levels (荷尔蒙水平). On nights closer to a full moon, the sleepers took an average of five minutes longer to fall asleep, and slept for 20 minutes less. In addition, brain activity fell by 30 percent during the sleep. And hormone levels that help control sleep cycles went down. On these nights, the sleepers complained they couldn’t sleep well even though they didn’t know the moon’s cycle. On the bright side, no sleeper turned into a werewolf.

The Swiss team doesn’t know how the moon affects sleep. The gravity (重力) of the moon causes ocean tides (潮汐) to rise and fall. But that force is too weak to affect sleep, Gajochen says. He believed some body’s biological clock may be affected by the moon cycles. There may be another reason, says David Dinges. This sleep researcher at the University Of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia says that the body clock is very sensitive (敏感的) to light at night. Those sleepers could have been affected by having too much moonlight before arriving at the lab.

【1】The writer mentioned “werewolves” in the first paragraph to _________.

A.show there are the moon’s cycles

B.attract people’s attention to the report

C.introduce a creature to readers

D.ask people not to sleep alone in the lab

【2】What happened to the sleepers during the experiment on a full moon?

A.They slept for about five minutes longer.

B.They could only sleep for 20 minutes.

C.Their brains were not as active as they were

D.They complained they were too tired to sleep.

【3】Even in the sleep lab, people’s sleep is still affected by the moon’s cycles, probably because of ________.

A.hormone levels

B.ocean tides

C.their brain activity

D.moonlight

【4】The passage is mainly about _________.

A.the sleeping problems caused by the moon’s cycles

B.the influence of the moon on human sleeping habits

C.the moon’s influence on sleeping and its possible reasons

D.the ways to get a better sleep on a full moon night

23、Florence, Rome, Venice. Beautiful cities to be sure, not to mention some of the planet’s most visited travel destinations. Yet this popularity means that for many, Italy’s premier hotspots are too expensive and overcrowded to visit. If you want to enjoy a true taste of Italy without the tourists, read our list of secret Italian towns you need to visit.

Treviso, Veneto

Treviso is like a small Venice with fewer tourists and crowds. Its historical walled centre is dotted with medieval churches, cobblestone streets, red-brick palaces and tiny old canals that connect buildings, gardens and piazzas.

Bologna, Emilia-Romagna

Bologna is one of the coolest towns in Italy. It is mostly frequented by students--Bologna is home to the oldest university in Europe and a whole lot of gastronomy fans, since it’s known to be the Italian food capital. Once you arrive, don’t forget to taste the delicacies of the area, such as lasagne, tortellini and, you guessed it, bolognese.

Castelluccio, Umbria

Castelluccio is the highest village in the Apennine Mountains at 1,452m (4,764ft) above sea level. It’s a charming village with lovely squares that offer amazing views over the mountains and fields that blossom with violets and red poppies. The best time of the year to visit Castelluccio is in spring--from late May to early June.

【1】Which town is regularly visited by students?

A.Treviso.

B.Bologna.

C.Alberobello.

24、For years, you’ve been told that stress can be deadly and is something to be avoided. Therefore, an anxious situation is often accompanied by a sense of fear. However, recent studies suggest that stress-related harmful effects on your health are not unavoidable.

One study followed 30,000 people over eight years and measured their stress levels. Those who believed that stress is harmful died at a higher rate than those who were under stress but didn’t acknowledge the so-called negative effects. The latter group was healthier, and many of them lived long, happy lives.

Stressful feelings start out in a small region of the brain that affects how people feel emotions, especially fear. The small region is very sensitive to possible threats. When it senses danger, it alerts the brain, and feelings of fear or stress can result. These feelings give people a warning message when they need to pay attention and when they need to take action. For instance, when the sight of a speeding car triggers (触发) the region to release a lightning-fast message, we know immediately to move out of the way!

Another study carried by Health psychologist Dr. McGonigal found a link between stress and the amount of sympathy people showed to others. Researchers tracked 1,000 adults, their descriptions of the level of stress in their lives and the amount of time spent helping others. With each major stressful event, such as a family tragedy or financial crisis, the risk of dying increased by 30 percent. But for the group who spent time helping others, there was no increase in stress-related deaths, even for those who had faced their own personal tragedies. According to Dr. McGonigal, “Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort. Go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows.”

【1】What does the study in paragraph 2 suggest?

A.Stress caused many deaths over eight years.

B.Stress won’t hurt you if you don’t acknowledge its presence.

C.It is not the stress but our response to it that creates problems.

D.Those without stress usually live long and happy lives.

【2】What do we know about stress from paragraph 3?

A.Stress is harmful to the brain.

B.Stress can cause danger.

C.Stress can be a threat to us.

D.Stress can lead to timely action.

【3】What can we learn from Dr. McGonigal’s study?

A.People without stress spend more time caring others.

B.Stress often causes a family tragedy or financial crisis.

C.Stress can be avoided by helping others.

D.People chasing meaning in life suffer less from stress.

【4】Which may be the best title for the text?

A.Stress Is Not Your Enemy

B.Man Can Conquer Stress

C.We Need Remove Stress

D.Stress Is Nearly Harmless
