21、It’s practically a scene on American television. A baby is born. Friends and family offer their congratulations. But then, in the car from the hospital, a deep worry falls over the parents. “How in the world are we going to pay for college?”
It’s true that going to university abroad is a very expensive option. Tuition is much higher than at Chinese universities, and then there are the expenses for room and board.
Tuition at Harvard this year is around $46,000(¥318,700), but when you include student service fees, room, and board, that figure jumps to over S65, 000 a year.
Schools outside the US are a little bit less expensive on average, but they can still empty your wallet. Tuition at Oxford University is at least ¥136,500. The cost of Australia’s University of Melbourne varies a great deal depending on the discipline, but tuition alone will likely set students back ¥148, 500 a year.
These numbers can be really shocking, but don’t worry. Most universities have systems in place to help students pay for their education.
The first thing you should look into is whether or not you are fit for financial aid. While some universities don’t allow international students to apply for aid, many make no distinction.
While most financial aid is “need-based”, meaning that you have to demonstrate that your parents cannot afford to pay the full amount, there are also scholarships based on merit. If you are a math talent or a promising basketball player you might end up going to college free of charge.
Then, there are some scholarships that are designed specifically for Chinese students. The famous Freeman Scholarship at Wesleyan University, for example, is awarded to two Chinese students from Hong Kong and two from the mainland each year.

22、Starting this year, Scholastic Aptitude Test(SAT)scores will be about more than just how many correct answers a person has on the test. The College Board in charge of the SAT recently published a new policy. It will include something called an "adversity score", based on 31 different factors and ranging from I to 100.A score of 50 is an "average level of disadvantage", said The New York Times.A higher score means a student has faced more adversity. It will cover 150 colleges later this year and be available to all US colleges in 2020.
What kind of adversity do students face? African-American students, for example, are more likely to attend underfunded(资金不足的) schools, and their families usually can’t afford extra SAT lessons.Higher SAT scores have been found to have a close tie with students from richer families and those with better-educated parents, reported The New York Times. As a result, the SAT has long been criticized for its unfairness.
The new adversity score tries to deal with that reality. If a student came from a poor neighborhood or attended a high school without enough funding, this information will be given to college administrators. While one student's SAT score may be lower than her rich classmates, college administrators may assume that she did her best in a bad situation.
This sounds good, but the College Board has received a lot of criticism for this new development.Parents are worried. They’re concerned that their children's hard work would be "completely neglected“(忽视)just because they happened to come from a rich family.
Writing in Time, Andre J.Washington and Daniel Hemel call the adversity score a half-hearted effort".They say the score fails to directly deal with racial inequality(种族不平等).They also say that the problems experienced by African-Americans are deeper than just low scores and school funding. For example, they point out that African-American students are less likely to have supportive relationships with teachers, so they are less likely to have satisfying recommendation letters.
At least they're trying, says Richard D Kahlenberg, a senior fellow aThe Century Foundation.”An imperfect adversity score is better than failing to consider the difficulty so many students get through”, he said."The adversity score is simple and direct.”

24、Everyone has their own best film of the year. To see the 2020 best films recommended by experts on the BBC Culture, you may have unexpected findings.
Wolfwalkers
Wolfwalkers is the most delightful film of its director, Tomm Moore. Its courageous heroine is Robyn, the daughter of an English huntsman. Robyn and her father have the job of clearing the wolves from a forest near Kilkenny, but when Robyn goes exploring, she finds that one of those wolves can transform into a human girl. The plot of the film is extremely fun.
The Personal History of David Copperfield
This joyous and endlessly creative film directed by Armando Iannucci is a successful achievement that raises people's interest in Charles Dickens' adaptations. Iannucci roots it firmly in the poverty and class system of Victorian England. BBC Culture's review called it "a warm and lively David Copperfield for today".
The Assistant
The Assistant stars Julia Garner as the new employee who is occupied with work from before dawn until after dusk, answering phones, printing out scripts, unpacking bottles of water. It's regarded as a low-key version of The Devil Wears Prada. The film looks beyond one person to center on a wider company culture. There is a serious atmosphere throughout as we wait for the assistant to fight against her boss or accept that she is going to keep working for him.
Emma
Did the world need one more Jane Austen's adaptation? Not really, but this enchanting, colourful version is a very welcome addition. As Emma, Anya Taylor-Joy captures the heart and warmth beneath Austen, a heroine who likes giving orders and arranging marriages for others. Johnny Flynn played the role of her seemingly impossible love, Mr. Knightley.

Alipay Ant Forest has been awarded the United Nation’s highest environmental honor - the 'U.N. Champions of the Earth' award. The statement was issued by UNEP(联合国环境计划署) on September 20.
The Ant Forest was started in the Alipay app in August 2016. It encourages users to adopt low-carbon activities - such as paying online and walking or taking buses to work instead of driving. Such behavior produces virtual 'green energy points. ' With enough energy points, users can grow a virtual(虚拟的) 'tree' on their mobile phone. Then the virtual tree is planted by Alipay in areas that need reforesting.
By August 2019, Alipay Ant Forest has attracted over 500 million users. Their low-carbon behavior has resulted in 122 million trees in arid areas in China, including regions in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai and Shanxi. The influence has also traveled beyond China. Inspired by Alipay Ant Forest, the Philippines' leading mobile wallet service GCash added GCash Forest to its App in June 2019. Local users are encouraged to contribute to reforestation and environmental protection by adopting low-carbon activities in their daily lives.
'Alipay Ant Forest shows how technology can change our world, ' said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UNEP. 'Although the environmental challenges we face are disappointing, we have the technology and the knowledge to defeat them. ' she said.
Champions of the Earth is the U.N. 's flagship global environmental award. It was established in 2005 to recognize outstanding figures that have had a positive effect on the environment.
'We are truly honored to receive this Champions of the Earth award,' said Eric Jing, Chairman and CEO of Ant Financial. 'Alipay Ant Forest reflects our belief that technology can and should be used for social good. Its popularity shows that the public is ready to take action to fight climate change, ' he said.
