二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In south Africa’s Limpopo province, a baobab tree (猴面包树) once grew so large and stood so strong that its human neighbors decided to build a pub inside the living tree’s thousand-year-old hollow trunk(树干). For 20 years, “The Big Baobab Pub” attracted tourists all over the world. But in August 2016, one of “the walls” broke. Eight months later, another huge piece broke, too. Now, five of the giant stems have collapsed and died, leaving only half of the tree standing.

Though it could sound like a result of human visitation, it's part of an alarming trend: many of the oldest, largest baobab trees in Africa have died within the last 12 years.

Stephan Woodbourne, an African scientist, said: “Of the oldest trees that we’ve looked at in Southern Africa, the three trees that are older than 2,000 years have all died in the past 10 years. Of the 11 trees that are 1,000 to 2,000 years old, six of them have died.”

A report published in the journal Nature Plants claims scores of the ancient baobab trees, some of which are up to 3,000 years old, are now dying because of rising global temperatures.

Researchers believe it is impossible that such a high number of old baobab trees die in such a short time due to natural causes. They think it may be associated with huge change of climate conditions that affect southern Africa in particular.

22、Knowing a foreign language is becoming more and more important at this time. Many people want to study the foreign language. There are two ways to learn a foreign language. The first is to stay in the homeland to study the foreign language. The second is to study in another place where the foreign language is spoken. Going to the native place to learn a language is the better choice. I will give reasons to support my opinion.

To begin with, going to the native country to learn a language offers us a good language environment. It will help us to learn the language faster. For example, everyone around me speaks the foreign language, and then I have to improve my self to talk with them. If I cannot talk with other people, I cannot even buy food to keep myself alive. This environment makes me want to develop myself to be able to talk with those people who speak the foreign language.

Secondly, I can make more friends who speak the foreign language as their native language. These friends can help me learn the language fast. In an English school, people come from different places and speak different languages. However, the only language that I can use to talk to my friends is the English language. Thus, I can talk with my friends without worrying about making mistakes. This helps me make fast progress in learning foreign languages.

In conclusion, I personally believe that learning languages in foreign countries is better than learning languages at home because I have to improve myself to communicate with other people. Besides, in a foreign country I can have a chance to speak the foreign language with my friends. Learning foreign languages in the native country is the better choice for me.
