22、Sometimes, we are influenced by the post-book & series blues.

We all have those pains of stress around the last few episodes (集) of our current favorite TV show, about the junction where there will be no “Next Episode” button to click. For many hours, days, and weeks, we invest ourselves in the plot, characters, and the world of the show, only to realize that it - after all - exists inside a screen. Therefore, it is meaningless to have those pains, which is similar to reading storybooks.

You get a story, escapism, possibly even life-changing revelations. In return they get your undivided attention. But what happens when you finally re-emerge from that transaction? The longer it goes on for, the harder the end seems to be.

It’s a sense of loss that you feel at the end of a book and you’re unhappy. It’s like saying goodbye to so many friends you’ve made, because you’ve got to know this person over the course of the book and now there’s no more connection, -and this is why sequels (续集)do so well - it’s that continuity.

One key to emotional connection is the all-important protagonist (主角). It’s why some people deliberately don’t finish certain books, because either they may not want to know what happens to a favorite character, or the end of a special read is worth prolonging forever.

Fiction and non-fiction stories have always been there to help catch our fall during troubled times. It’s pure, healthy escapism.

Perhaps the best way to get over the post-book or post-series blues is to be grateful for what you’ve learned, and enjoy where your creative thinking has taken you.

23、   Helping yourself to a cup of coffee may seem like a small, everyday thing. But it is not the case if you are quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪). Quadriplegics have lost the use of all four limbs. Thanks to a project organized by John Donoghue of Brown University, in Rhode Island, and his colleagues, quadriplegics have hope.

One of the participants in his experiments, a 58-year-old woman who is paralyzed and unable to use any of her limbs, can now pick up a bottle containing coffee and bring it close enough to her mouth to drink from it using a straw. She does so using a thought-controlled robotic arm fixed to a nearby stand. It is the first time she has managed something like that since she suffered a stroke, nearly 15 years ago.

Arms are more complicated pieces of machinery than legs, so controlling them via electrodes (多波段电极) attached to the skin of someone’s scalp (头皮) is not yet possible. Instead, brain activity has to be recorded directly. And that is what Dr Donoghue is doing. Dr Donoghue and his team have had small, multichannel electrodes implanted in the parts of the motor cortexes (运动皮质) of participants’ brains associated with hand movements.

Dr Donoghue and his team decoded signals from their participants’ brains as they were asked to imagine controlling a robotic arm making present movements. The woman and other volunteers were then encouraged to operate one of two robot arms by thinking about the movements they wanted to happen. When the software controlling the arms detected the relevant signals, the arms moved appropriately. The arm that the woman used to help herself to a drink is a lightweight device developed by DLR, German’s Aerospace Centre, as part of its robotics program.

Dr Donoghue and his colleagues have thus shown that a mechanical arm can be controlled remotely by the brain of a person with paralysis. Controlling an arm that is attached to the individual’s body will be trickier, but in time even that may be possible. In the meantime, a robotic arm attached to a wheelchair will be a real soon.

1What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph3 refer to?

A.Controlling a robotic arm via electrodes attached to the scalp.

B.Recording the activity of brain and implanting electrodes.

C.Controlling a robotic leg via electrodes attached to the scalp.

D.Controlling a mechanical arm attached to the individual’s body.

2Which statement may the author agree with?

A.Thanks to the research by Dr Donoghue and his colleagues, a paralyzed woman can get herself a drink.

B.The woman in the experiment drinks a bottle of coffee with a robotic arm attached to her scalp.

C.The woman is encouraged to control the mechanical arm by moving her body.

D.The robotic arm the woman used is remoted by DLR.

3What’s the author’s attitude to the future of the robotic arm attached to quadriplegic?

A.Pessimistic. B.Objective.

C.Controversial. D.Optimistic.

4What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Quadriplegics can use the artificial limbs developed by Dr Donoghue and lead a good life by themselves.

B.The newly-developed thought-controlled robotic arms can help the paralyzed in their daily life.

C.Scientists have invented a kind of robotic arm attached to the individual’s body.

D.A quadriplegic can be on his feet again due to the new invention.

24、It can be a real struggle trying to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easiIy, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.

At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, lout then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK.1 managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children’s book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.

【1】Why was the author advised to read children’s books?

A.Because she was weak in reading great works.

B.Because she was slow to learn language.

C.Because she liked children's literature.

D.Because she couldn't remember any words.

【2】What can kids get from childrens' books according to the passage?

A.Vocabulary and listening skills.

B.Learning methods.

C.Words and structures.

D.Designing skills.

【3】What causes the author feel surprised while reading childrens’ books?

A.Grasping the context from the pictures.

B.Looking up the definations of words from a dictionary.

C.Getting familiar with the plots of the story.

D.Understanding the words simply from the context.

【4】What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Reading Children's Books

B.The Way of Learning Languages

C.The Method of Using Dictionary

D.My Good Reading Habits
