21、Walk into a newsroom of journalists and you will smell the coffee and see people rushing for their 14th bathroom break of the day. You will see a business “about people and why they do what they do, and what it all means”.

That’s how Jack Smith, the 72-year-old former newspaper reporter and editor, described it to 30 visiting students from Auburn High School.

While growing up, Smith waited every day for the mail carrier to pull up and drop the newspaper off. “I’d read and study every issue, sometimes for hours on end,” he said. The stories and design of the paper began his love for journalism.

His first route when he went to college wasn’t journalism though. He first wanted to become a civil engineer until someone told him the amount of math and physics involved. He then changed to the business school, eventually making the move to journalism. Paul Burnett, standing on the same place as Smith did during his speech, inspired him while he was in college.

Smith walked up the steps to his first job at the Montgomery Advertiser earning $ 50 a week. His first task was to rewrite an article on Martin Luther King Jr.

“Those seemingly meaningless stories could be just as important as a story on the front page,” he told the students that it is a job that needs hard work and they have to be eager to go and do all again the next day.

“I’m glad I didn’t decide to build the Golden Gate Bridge or take Wall Street by storm,” Smith said. That wouldn’t have landed him a job that is so near his heart. For him, the sweat and pain in the life of a journalist was worth every moment.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To present the work of journalists.

B.To explain the responsibility of journalists.

C.To show the working condition of journalists.

D.To describe the development of journalism.

【2】Why did Jack Smith give up being a civil engineer?

A.He wasn’t interested in it.

B.He wanted to learn business.

【3】What does Jack Smith think of journalism?

A.It needs skills.

B.It requires many talents.

C.It should focus on important events.

D.It deserves people’s love and hard work.

【4】What can we know about Jack Smith from the last paragraph?

A.He tried many different jobs.

B.He gets much pleasure from journalism.

C.He loves being a journalist from his heart.

D.He would have chosen a worthier job.

22、Before you make friends, you have to decide who you want to be your friends. Most people like to have friends who like to do the same kind of things they do.

The quickest way to make a friend is to smile. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk to. It may not be easy at first to smile, but remember most people will stay away from a scary or angry look.

One easy way to start a conversation with someone is to say something nice about him. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?

Ask your new friends questions about themselves. Who’s their favourite singer, where do they live, what do they do after school are all good questions to start a conversation. Make sure you have something to add to the conversation, too. When someone asks you a question, do have an answer for it. There is nothing that will stop a conversation quicker than a shrug for an answer.

Kids who show an interest in other kids and who are kind and friendly make good friends. Remember, everyone wants to be around people who like to do similar things and people who are nice to them.

23、The 2021 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to the 73-year-old novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, for his firm and passionate descriptions of the effects of colonialism(殖民主义)and the fate of the refugee(难民)in the gap between cultures and continents.

Born in Zanzibar in 1948, Gurnah arrived in England as a refugee in the late 1960s. At the age of 21, he began to write in English. He was Professor of English and Postcolonial Literature at the University of Kent. Canterbury, until his recent retirement this year.

Gurnah is the first black African author to have won the award since Wole Soyinka in 1986. He has published 10 novels and a number of short stories. The theme of the refugee's sufferings runs through his works. His 1994 novel Paradise, which told the story of a boy growing up in Tanzania in the early 20th century won the Booker Prize and marked his breakthrough as a novelist. And his most recent work Afterlives picks up the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the German colonization of Africa. His novels open our eyes to a culturally diversified East Africa unfamiliar to many in other parts of the world.

Gurnah said his award would mean issues such as the refugee crisis and colonialism, which he had experienced would be "discussed". "These are things that are with us every day. People are dying: people are being hurt around the world —we must deal with these issues in the most kind way," he said, "The world is much more violent than it was in the 1960s, so there is now greater pressure on the countries that are safe. They unavoidably draw more people."

In an interview in 2016, when asked if he would call himself an "author of postcolonial and/or world literature", Gurnah replied. "I would not use any of those words. I wouldn't call myself a something writer of any kind. In fact, I am not sure that I would call myself anything apart from my name.

24、Many years ago, Beverly Johnson was one of the original “supermodels”. She walked on the runways of fashion shows around the world. Today, Johnson is 69 years old. She is not letting her age stop her from walking the runways again. She has a simple answer to why she decided to return to the fashion world during New York Fashion Week: She was asked to.

Johnson, a writer and businesswoman, helped to break barriers for other Black women in the modeling industry. In 1974, she appeared on the cover of the American Vogue magazine. This made her that magazine’s first Black cover model. She had great success in her modeling career. She remained a popular face for many years, appearing on the covers of hundreds of magazines.

During this year’s Spring New York Fashion Week, Johnson walked the fashion runways for designers Sergio Hudson and Bibhu Mohapatra. She was the last model to walk in the Mohapatra show on February 15. The crowd clapped and cheered when they recognized her.

“Today, all of the models were models of color in honor of Black History Month,” Johnson said as she started to cry. “In 2024, it will be my 50th anniversary of that historic cover of being the first Black woman to grace the cover of American Vogue,” she added. When Johnson was first coming up in the fashion industry in the 1970s, she said she did not see this kind of presentation by Black designers or models.

Johnson said she enjoyed spending time with the younger models during this year’s New York Fashion Week. She found them “beautiful, elegant, and wonderful”.

She noted one big difference between them and her and it was not their ages. “The girls are much taller.” In the Hudson show, she said, no model was under 1.8 meters. Back when she was modeling, she said, 1.5 meters was tall enough.

【1】Why did she turn up on the runways again according to Johnson?

【3】What was the purpose of the fashion show?

A.To celebrate an event related to Black people.
