22、Today it's not hard to spot Asian faces in all walks of life in the US. Actress Maggie Q can often be seen on the covers of magazines because of her highly successful role in the TV series Nikita. Salman Khan has made education easier and closer to thousands of people through his free online learning website, Khan Academy.
Asian Americans are Americans of Asian descent, including descendants from China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India. According to data from the US-based Pew Research Center, Asian Americans are the highest paid group. They also have the best educational and professional backgrounds, and they enjoy great upward mobility in US society.
Why are Asian Americans so successful? It is certainly not because they were born with higher IQs, but because of their hard work, strong families, and passion for education. While Americans believe that A grades go to smart kids, Asians are more likely to think that they go to hard workers. Asian American kids are allowed no excuse for even getting an A minus. In the US, the joke is that an A minus is an “Asian F”. A positive stereotype may also have played a role. The stereotype of Asian Americans as smart and hardworking might give them more confidence in school.
However, being seen as a model minority can have negative effects. It is a burden on Asian Americans. It can be stressful for kids to achieve top grades in school at the cost of enjoying their childhood. When they go to the workplace, the idea of a hard-working model minority has created an idea that Asian Americans are great thinkers and doers but don't have the confidence and interpersonal skills to be successful leaders. Take Yahoo as an example, 57 percent of its tech employees are Asian Americans, but only 17 percent of its leadership roles belong to Asian Americans.
【1】Which of the following is TRUE about Asian Americans?
A.They easily accept being second-best in school.
B.They are the second highest-paid group in the US.
C.They are likely to improve their social positions.
D.They are the most highly-educated and stable group.
【2】Why are Asian Americans generally more successful?
A.Because they can only accept A and B in exams.
B.Because they value hard work and education.
C.Because they are more intelligent than other groups.
D.Because they are more confident than the majority.
【3】What does the underlined word “stereotype” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Generalized impression.
B.Public images.
C.Long tradition.
D.Common sense.
【4】What can we infer about Asian Americans from the last two paragraphs?
A.It's not necessary for them to achieve top grades.
B.They lack communication and interpersonal skills.
C.They should try to change people's positive stereotype.
D.They still suffer pressure though seen as a model minority.
23、BEIJING—Wang Yaping, a taikonaut onboard China’s space station core module (舱), offered people on Earth a zero- gravity musical performance on Tuesday evening to celebrate the Lantern Festival. The space show was shared via a video released at an annual TV gala for the festival celebration. In the video, Wang was seen floating in the space module while playing a guzheng, or Chinese zither. She played a segment of the popular Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower”.
The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. People usually hang colorful lanterns, play riddle games and express their wishes and hopes for the future.
The crew members, who traveled to the space station core module on the Shenzhou-13 mission, kept some festive traditions alive as they continued to rotate around the Earth. Commander Zhai Zhigang wrote riddles on red paper scrolls with a brush pen. He displayed the calligraphy together with taikonaut Ye Guangfu and extended festival greetings to the audience. They also sent blessings to athletes at the ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics: “We hope that you all achieve success, gain friendship and harvest your best Olympic experience.”
The video of the space performance was received with much enthusiasm after it was shared on social media platforms. It drew nearly 2 million clicks in one hour after several national media outlets posted it on the Chinese micro-blogging site Sina Weibo. The Weibo account of Zhurong, China’s first rover on Mars, reposted the video, commenting, “The music was so beautiful, and it made me homesick, too.”
The Lantern Festival also marks the last day of the lunar New Year celebration. Though far from home, the festive sentiments in space are the same. The China Manned Space Agency released a video on social media platforms on Tuesday, showing that the taikonauts had decorated the orbiting core module with red lanterns, Chinese knots and paper-cutting decorations. Wearing new clothes, the trio (三人小组) enjoyed the traditions of eating dumplings and posting spring couplets on walls. During the Chinese New Year holiday, they were also spotted watching the Winter Olympics and doing workouts in orbit.
【1】How did the mass enjoy the musical performance according to the text?

24、If you want to teach your students critical thinking, give them opportunities to brainstorm and analyze things.【1】

Show students a vague picture to get them thinking about their own ideas. Show your students a picture of something that is a bit vague. 【4】 Next, ask them to break down the clues in the picture that led them to this idea. Finally, ask them to think about how some of their own beliefs or experiences shaped what they thought about the picture.
