21、   We found and researched top---rated alarm clocks. Over the duration of one month, here are all the tests we ran:

Performance

Readability: We took note of how visible the numbers or analog(长短针的)hands on the clock were, both in the day and night.

Ease of setting: We noted how difficult it was to set the alarm on each clock, and the time it took.

Wake---up experience: We tested the alarm and noted the volume(音量), tone, harshness(刺耳)and general experience of waking up to the alarm.

Dimmability: We tested how dimmable(可调光的)each clock was in the light and the dark.

Snooze(打盹): We tested how easy it was to snooze the alarm, and took note if it was customizable and easy to set.

Power: We noted if the clock needed batteries, a power cord or both. If it needed a power cord, we measured the cord.

●Build

Materials: We felt each alarm clock and judged how nice or cheap it felt, including buttons and dials.

Durability: We knocked each alarm clock off the same bedside table five times, noting any damage after each drop.

Appearance: We noted its size and color options, and rated its beauty.

X factors

Extra features: We noted and tested any and all extra features and how useful they were.

How we rated

Based on the criteria above, we gave each alarm clock a score for each test, totaling into a score for each category, which we then added up for a final overall score. Here's a full break-down:

Performance had a total of 70 points: readability(15 points), ease of setting(15 points), wake-up experience (15 points), dimmability(10 points), snooze(10 points)and power(5points).

Build had a total of 30 points: materials(10 points), durability(10 points)and appearance(10 points).

X factors had a total of 5 points: extra features(5 points).

22、With hospitals and nursing homes tending to thousands of patients every year accidents can and do happen. These incidents whether they are through carelessness or otherwise, can leave patients feeling powerless. That’s not the case.

“There is growing public awareness. People are feeling they have more rights and they have tools in hand to make a complaint,” said Ralph Montano, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health, which regulates hospitals and long-term care facilities in the state.

That department received more than 6000 complaints about hospitals in 2007; in the most recent year statistics are available. The complaints can be about mixed-up lab results, medicine errors, foreign objects left in a patient during surgery or a host of other topic.

Similarly, the California department of Aging received 43,000 nursing home complaints in 2014. Some said patient abuse or neglect of patients; others reported missing items. And some commented on the quality of the food.

But finding the channels through them to put forward a complaint can be tiring and time consumption. Many consumers simply don’t bother, and some become lost in the system. Whether the complaint is against a hospital or a long-term care facility, the process is similar—and many people can help, including the facility’s staff, insurance company representatives and state regulators.

If you want to make a complaint while in the hospital, Patti Harvey, vice president of quality and patient care services for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, recommends talking with the bedside nurse. If that doesn’t work, you can talk with other people higher in the chain of command, up to the hospital administrator. If the problem isn’t still taken care of—say you disagree with your treatment plan or have a problem with your doctor—member service offices at each hospital can help address your concerns.

【1】Why are there more complaints from patients?

A. Because there are more departments to deal with complaints.

B. Because in the hospital there are more accidents than before.

C. Because it’s convenient for people to put forward complaints.

D. Because hospitals have more and more rights.

【2】Many consumers don’t make a complaint because ________.

A. complaints are bad for a long-term care facility

B. few accidents happen

C. many complaints are lost

D. it takes time to make a complaint

【3】The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A. to solve problems with the hospital quickly

B. something about Patti Harvey

C. how to make complaints in the hospital

D. we should say we disagree with the treatment plan

【4】Who can help if you complain against a hospital or a long-term care facility?

A. Jack—a representative of an insurance company.

B. Peter—a medical officer from the government.

C. Rudy—a headmaster of a medical university.

D. Tom—a teacher of a medical school.

23、Imagine a house that keeps itself warm in the wintertime. Think of the savings in terms of fuel bills and unfriendly emissions. Such houses in fact exist, called “passive houses”. The concept of these highly energy-efficient buildings took root in the 1990s, before slowly consolidating as a niche construction (生态位构建) concept in the 2000s. Are passive houses now actively moving into the mainstream as sustainable buildings?

For Brian Mc Garry, an economics lecturer who built a family house based on passive housing criteria in the Pyrenees this year, the arguments look convincing. As his first full winter in the low energy house draws in, we asked him to keep us informed. Do passive houses work?

I had never heard of a passive house in February 2012, when I purchased a plot of land. Nor did I expect that I would be persuaded to build a pre-constructed, custom-designed house based on energy-efficient passive house criteria. It promised to be easier and quicker to build, cheaper to run, and more comfortable to live in. The objective was to incorporate the fundamental concepts of passive energy management into my project: an airtight and highly insulated building envelope; large south facing double or triple-glazed windows (if possible, filled with argon gas) that passively capture the energy of the sun; a heat recovery ventilation system to provide fresh air; and a simple, low-cost heating system consisting of a modern wood-burning stove, a bathroom heater and a portable radiator backup for when the sun doesn’t shine and temperatures decline. No significant limitations were placed on the design, and it had excellent environmental credentials. Moreover, the cost was no more than a conventional build.

After six months in use, the house is proving to be both cheap to run and remarkably comfortable–staying cool in the hot summer was effortless, as long as the windows were shuttered or shaded from the sun. Nowstaying warm in the cold, high-altitude December climate also seems easy, so far.

Winter arrived in force in the Pyrenees in November, with abundant snowfalls and temperatures as low as minus Celsius. Though early days, the house has responded well: the stove is lit during cold evenings but the portable radiator has not yet been needed. This type of construction seems not only to make economic and environmental sense, but to enhance our quality of life, too.

1We can learn from Paragraph one that passive houses __________.

A. consume extra energy to keep warm in winter and cool in summer

B. had been introduced for a decade before the birth of the theory

C. appeal to both the self-builders and those constructors

D. refer to a certain house comfortable, costly and also pleasing

2Regarding the passive energy management, the houses have characteristics EXCEPT _______

A. using south-facing windows to take in solar energy

B. Providing energy for taking a shower when it’s rainy

C. supplying fresh air with a special heat recovery system

D. placing more demands and restrictions on the design

3How did Brian McGarry find his self-built passive house?

A. very unaffordable

B. Energy-consuming

C. comfortable to live in

D. Awkward to use

4What is the writer’s attitude towards the passive housing?

A. supportive B. critical

C. oppositive D. doubtful

24、Now, let’s talk about earthquakes on our planet. Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many. For example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground vibrates (震动). Houses fall down. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes, there is a heavy loss of human lives.

Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centers of some earthquakes are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves, also known as seismic waves(地震波), or tsunamis(海啸) can travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings. Very often fires follow the most serious earthquakes. In 1906, the numbers of fires were burning in the city. The water pipes were also shaken and broken, so it was not possible to put the fire out. There was no water. The Tokyo Earthquake of 1923 happened just before noon. People were cooking meals on their fires at that time. When the ground shook, the fires shook, too. Hot materials were thrown on the different parts of the houses, some of which were made of wood. Soon 134 fires were burning in the city.

What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together and the walls so not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel do not burn. Over the years, scientists studied the results of the earthquake in different parts of the world, and they are convinced that this kind of building is the safest.

【1】What can we know about earthquake from the first paragraph?

A.Britain has large numbers of earthquake.

B.There is often a great noise during an earthquake.

C.There is a heavy loss of human lives in every earthquake.

D.Trains will not run off the lines during the earthquake.

【2】Some of the undersea earthquakes were caused by ______.

A.the breakout of the volcano

B.the seismic waves

C.the tsunami

D.the powerful forces inside the earth

【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.A building with concrete walls and a steel frame stands up best in an earthquake.

B.There is no chance of fire in a building with concrete walls.

C.Scientist studied the causes of the earthquake to get the conclusion.

D.A steel frame has no help in making the house stronger.
