二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The Truth about the Joneses

You know the Joneses. Or maybe for you it's the Smiths, or the Millers. 1 They have nicer cars, fancier clothes and even cuter dogs.

But the Joneses may not be who you think they are. 2 Or they may just work really hard to build wealth. We'll say that again: The Joneses are either drowning in payments or deserving of their wealth.

So be happy for them or feel sorry for them. But don't try to keep up with them! 3 And you've had enough of all the bad feelings of your own life. You're ready to be happy where you are and to work for what you want. You're ready for contentment.

Contentment is a choice. It's having an attitude of joy when everyone else is attempting to buy happiness. So who cares if Mrs. Jones drives a luxury SUV with heated seats and keyless entry? Good for her. Your 10-year-old car gets you everywhere her sweet ride gets her.

4 It is something that's not visible to the Joneses of the world. They can't see the steady chunks of money you put in your emergency fund. Or the $15, 000 of debt you paid off. Or the retirement(退休)contributions you're about to increase.

But you know the significance of your actions.

5 You know your energy is better used for your own savings goals.

A.That only leads to dissatisfaction.

B.You may just want another reliable car.

C.They may be up to their eyeballs in debt.

D.At this point, you may still feel worried about looking good.

E.They're the people who have everything bigger and better than you do.

F.You've wasted enough energy keeping up with people you don't really care.

G.Right now you're doing whatever it takes to build a solid foundation for your family.

22、The 1920s was a decade of wealth, decadence(堕落) and social changes. They were known as the Roaring Twenties, and the best place to experience this exciting time was New York City. But what was it really like?

  Prohibition

In 1919, a new law in the US known as Prohibition made it illegal to buy and sell alcohol. But Prohibition didn’t stop people drinking; it just drove the sale of strong alcoholic drink underground. Bootleggers(走私贩) waited off the coast of New York after dark and brought illegal alcohol into the city.

  Jazz

Jazz was the music of New York in the 1920s. In fact, the decade is called Jazz Age. The best place to listen to this new form of music was the Cotton Club in Harlem. All the great jazz musicians played at the Cotton Club, including Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington. Also, in 1942 George Gershwin composed the jazzinfluenced Rhapsody in Blue. The piece has been called “a musical portrait of New York” and was used by Woody Allen in his film Manhattan.

  Art Deco

Art Deco was the most popular style of the 1920s, with bright colors and geometric designs; it can be seen in the art, architecture and inside designs of the period. New York is full of Art Deco buildings, but the most famous ones are the Chrysler Building (built between 1928 and 1930) and the Empire State Building (built between 1930 and 1931).

  The Great Depression

On 29th October, 1929, the Roaring Twenties came to a dramatic end. On that day (known as “Black Tuesday”), the US stock market crashed, causing the Great Depression. The economic downturn lasted ten years and affected most of the Western world. Unemployment in America reached 25% and the country didn’t recover until after World War II.

23、The Disneyland parks are full of amusements, but they are also small cities that deal with deliveries, rubbish, and groups of visitors. People need to move from one place to another; they have to refuel and relax. To meet these requirements, the parks are well-equipped in reality. For example, Disneyland Park in California has a reliable transport system. In Walt Disney World in Florida, dustbins are spaced 30 feet apart, and all of them are emptied through underground tubes.

None of this happened by accident. Walt Disney first had his idea for a play land in 1937. He first imagined the park's buildings in a small size. He spent years collecting ideas by visiting other places. He studied Beverly Park in Los Angeles, including rebuilt historic villages. He visited Colonial Williamsburg, where employees dressed up and walked around. Then he organized a team of engineers and designers to plan and build a small world he called Disneyland. Walt Disney had blueprints (蓝图) drawn up, and tried to get the permission to break ground (破土动工).

In 1953, he bought some land in Anaheim. Some designers thought it was too far, but Disney went ahead. It was like building a new city Pipes had to be fixed. Railway track had to be laid around. Disney chose the hub-and-spoke (轴辐式) street pattern that many cities have. “I want Disneyland to be a place where you can't get lost,” he said, Designers and architects also diagrammed (图解) the rides and made models, while artists painted the background.

Finally in July 1955, the visitors came. If they picked up maps, they could see the results of years’ planning: the shops and restaurants, the square, and the streets. The magic city had finally jumped off the drawing board and come into real life.

A.Confident but selfish.

B.Stubborn but kind-hearted.

C.Considerate and determined.

D.Careful and hard-working.

24、Using a mobile phone before going to bed can damage your health, according to a major study.

It says that radiation from the mobile phone can cause insomnia(失眠症) and headaches as well as cutting the time spent in deep sleep. Failing to get enough sleep can lead to depression, lack of concentration and personality changes. In teenagers and young children, lack of sleep can result in attention disorders and poor grades.

The research showed that using mobile phones before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them.

Deep sleep is important as it is the time when the body rejuvenates(更新) cells and repairs damage suffered during the day. Scientists found that using mobile phones an hour before sleep affects it. In the study scientists examined the sleep patterns of 36 women and 35 men aged 18 to 45. Some were exposed to radiation that is similar to what a person receives when using a mobile phone. The others received none. The results are as follows: The first group took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep and spent less time in the deepest one. However, the second group was opposite.

The findings will shock many parents. Many parents are always worried about their children’s health. But they didn’t have a better way to persuade them not to use a mobile phone.
