21、 One night many years ago, an old couple entered a small hotel in Philadelphia. The couple went up to the front desk, hoping to get a room for the night. “Could you give us a room?” the husband asked.
The clerk looked at the couple and explained that there were three meetings in the town. “ All of our rooms are taken,” the clerk said. “But I can’t send you out into the rain at one o’clock in the morning. Would you be willing to sleep in my room? It’s not exactly a suite(套间) , but it will be good enough to make you comfortable for the night.”
As he paid his bill the next morning, the old man said to the clerk, “You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel. Maybe someday I’ll build one for you.” The clerk looked at them and smiled. And the three of them had a good laugh.
Two years passed. The clerk received a letter from the old man. It contained a ticket to New York, asking the young man to pay him a visit. The old man met the clerk and led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. He then pointed to a great new building there, and told him, “ This is the new hotel for you.”

22、High school biology teacher Kelly Chavis knew smartphones were a problem in her class. But she did not realize how serious the problem was until she did an in-class experiment. For one class period, she used a blackboard on her student’s phones to count (数) every text, call, Snapchat that appeared to their phones. She was shocked by the results. “One girl, just during the one hour, got close to 150 text messages or call 150!” she said.
Tests, after-school activities and problems at home can increase pressure for students. But Chavis is among a growing number of teachers and parents who believe that smartphone is the number one reason for the growing anxiety levels.
Emily Mogavero is a 17-year-old student in Buffal, New York. She said, “It worries me that I’m on my phone so much. I sometimes put my phone out of reach or power it down so I don’t hear.”
Schools are starting to take actions to deal with the problem. Some schools have organized No Smartphone Days (NSD) in which teachers and students do not use their telephone on certain days. Some parents are not letting their children get smartphones until they grow up. Erin Schifferli, a parent in Western New York, says her 12-year-old daughter, Aeva, won’t get a phone until she is 16 years old.
Another parent, Deirdre Birmingham of New Jersey, signed onto a campaign (活动) called “Wait until Eighth Grade (WUEG)” because she didn’t think her video game-loving son was ready for a smartphone. The campaign joins groups of parents who have children in the same class. These parents agree to not let their children get phones until they are old enough, or in the 8th grade.
Birmingham said she had feeling that the phone “would be difficult for my child to manage. As an adult, I find it difficult sometimes to manage.”

A.Tests.
B.Homework
C.Smartphones.

【3】What can be inferred from the story of Birmingham?
A.She is willing to support the WUEG campaign.

C.Students should stop using telephones on certain days.
D.Her child is suffering from the anxiety caused by smartphones.
【4】How does the author support the main idea of the text?

23、Extra fingers are not that rare. About one or two in every 1, 000 babies are born with extra fingers. If the extras are just small nubs(肿块), they may be surgically removed at birth. But some extra fingers can prove helpful, a new study shows.
An extra finger can be incredibly handy. People born with six fingers per hand can tie their shoes, flexibly manage phones and play a complicated video game---all with a single hand. What's more, their brains had no trouble controlling the more complex movement of their extra fingers, the new study finds. Its results also highlight how flexible the human brain can be. That information can guide people who design brain-controlled robots.
Researchers worked with a 52-year-old woman and her 17-year-old son, both of whom were born with six fingers on each hand. Their extra fingers grew between the thumb and index finger. And they resemble thumbs in how they can move. The researchers studied the subjects' hands with MRI(核磁共振成像), which can map body structures. They also looked at activity in the parts of the brain that control the hands. Those scans showed a dedicated brain system that controls the extra fingers. The sixth fingers had their own muscles and tendons That means they don't' just depend on the muscles that move the other fingers as some doctors had thought. The brain had no trouble directing the extra fingers, the researchers showed. It suggests someone's mind would be able to control robotic fingers or limbs. However, it might be harder for a person not born with extra fingers.
Living in a world designed for people with five fingers has led the mom and son to adapt in interesting ways. For instance, eating tools are too simple for them, so they constantly change the posture on the eating tools and use them in different way. Still, not everyone with extra fingers may show improved flexibility. In some cases, extra fingers may be less well developed.
【1】What does the new research find about extra fingers?
A.They are always useless.
B.They are very uncommon.
C.They are usually necessary.
D.They are sometimes beneficial.
【2】What can we infer about extra fingers from the text?
A.Brain-controlled robots can be designed to have extra fingers.
B.Extra fingers are more flexible than normal ones.

A.They can't move by themselves.
B.They follow other fingers to move.
C.They act under the direction of the brain.
D.They move out of the control of the brain.

A.Sixth Finger Can Improve Ability
B.Sixth Finger Can Prove Extra Handy

24、Watson entered Mr. Smith’s office. The Boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn’t do well without giving them a second chance.
“Watson,” said Mr. Smith, “this past year your department hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’ m sorry, —but you’ll have to go.” “But, sir—if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.”
“What’s that!” said the Boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.”
“I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star trackman(田径运动员) and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠军) there.”
The Boss sat perfectly still for a long time—a faraway(恍惚的) look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said, “We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours—maybe more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.”
Watson got out, with surprise in his face. Then the Boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School —written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read:
I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you’re a cripple (跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad. They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. Something big—that he won’t even know about.
Your son,
Herbie
